Upcoming Redsn0w Update Makes Use of 5.0+ Blobs!

  • December 9, 2011 2:08 am

Just a short while ago, the iPhone Dev Team’s MuscleNerd Tweeted some news of the upcoming version of redsn0w. With the recent release of iH8sn0w’s iFaith, the use of SHSH Blobs on iOS 5.0 have become relevant again. When Apple released 5.0, downgrading iOS version was a thing of the past. And it wasn’t until the latest iFaith that we were able to begin rejoicing in the back up of our blobs.

MuscleNerd has confirmed that he latest build of the jailbreak utility will breath new life into TinyUmbrella and the art of saving your blobs. Running the latest version of TU for iOS 5.0.1 will save those blobs as well as your APTicket, yielding you the ability to downgrade after the iOS 5.0.x upgrade. This is huge news for the jailbreak community. Both dev teams hard at work on finding an untethered jailbreak exploit. If they happen to find a vulnerability that is compatible with 5.0/5.0.1, you will be able to save your blobs now and if you ever accidentally upgrade past that, redsn0w in use with said blobs will grant you access to the past.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the Chronic Dev Teams latest tool to utilize the community’s crash reports will yield an exploitable crack. Until then, we highly recommend hopping over to TinyUmbrella and getting your 5.0.1 blobs saved!

Google Launches “Currents”, Flipboard Competitor.

  • December 8, 2011 3:39 pm

Flipboard’s new iPhone app was just released this week to much hype and fan fare. The smaller-screened app was received so well in fact that the company’s servers had some pretty serious issues for the first ~24 hours after the iPhone app’s release. But we’re not here to boast about Flipboard today. Instead, it is Google and their new Flipboard competitor “Currents” that we’re interested in.

Available for Android and iOS, currents looks to further push Google’s tentacles into your everyday lives. If you’ve seen or heard anything about Flipboard, you’ve already got the concept of Currents — it’s a magazine style way of consuming news media, pictures, video, etc. We’ve only begun to explore Flipboard for iPhone and now have another media-centric app to delve into. Look for a hands-on comparo between Flipboard for iPhone and Currents for iPhone in the next few days.

In the meantime, check out the teaser video after the break…

Twitter Rolls Out Embeddable Tweets. Bloggers Rejoice!

  • December 8, 2011 3:16 pm

Find yourself writing about Twitter-based material a lot? Along with new UI/functionality for the Android and iOS apps as well as a revamped Twitter.com web portal, Twitter also unleashed another new gem: Embeddable tweets.

Users of WordPress and Posterous blogs can simply copy the tweet URL or shortcode into a post and the respective services will automagically display the embedded tweet (as seen immediately above). For everyone else, simply clicking “embed this tweet” right next to the time stamp information on the bottom of a tweet nets the image up top, giving you options for how to embed any given tweet. Also included: The ability to 1-click follow any twitter user from the embedded tweet — nice.

Pretty cool, eh?

YouMail Removed From Android Market.

  • December 8, 2011 2:24 pm

Apparently T-Mobile has an issue with YouMail, as the carrir-sourced complaint to Google has seen the popular app/service that replaces your typical voicemail service with a much better offering that among other things, allows transcription and “visual voicemail” on a good number of phones, removed from the Android Market. In response to a question from GigaOM’s Kevin Tofel, YouMail CEO Alex Quilici wasn’t shy in his assumptions regarding YouMails Android Market removal:

“We hate to think this is simply anti-competitive behavior on T-Mobile’s part — simply because we’ve produced an innovative and dramatically better voicemail product than they offer, and that’s free on top of it. Especially given they are trying to finish their acquisition by AT&T. But we’re hard-pressed to understand their behavior. Wouldn’t we all be much better off if T-Mobile instead took an approach like the other carriers and tried to see how they could benefit from the success we’ve been having with YouMail?”

And the “guilty until proven innocent” doesn’t speak well for the Android Marketplace either. At a minimum, if one carrier complains, why not simply turn off the app for that carrier — it’s only one checkbox – versus suspending it from anyone?”

At least initially, the removal of YouMail seems quite extreme as it affects not just T-Mobile customers, but all Android users across carriers despite no other major carriers (besides T-Mobile today) raising any problems with YouMail in recent memory.

We’ve reached out to T-Mobile and Google regarding the removal of YouMail and will report back when we here anything more.

Twitter Launches Completely Revamped iOS And Android Apps, Website.

  • December 8, 2011 1:44 pm

Twitter users on both Android and iOS platforms have some new pixels to punish today. Twitter has released completely revamped apps for both platforms, bringing not only new visual changes, but functional updates/additions as well.

The biggest change revolves around basic menu navigation with Twitter now sporting 4 tabs across the bottom of the app: Home, Connect, Discover, and Me.

“Home” is simply a fancy name for your timeline while “Connect” houses things such as @mentions, retweets, and favorited tweets. “Discover” pulls in popular stories and trending topics. Finally, “Me” is now the place to go to view your profile and Direct Messages.

Twitter says in their new blog post introducing the revamped app that they are hard at work on bringing the new changes to Twitter for iPad in an effort to streamline user access and interaction with the popular micro-blogging service.

Also updated: Twitter.com will sport an all-new look (see above) that sees the timeline moving to the opposite side of the screen. *Gasp!* Overall, the look and feel is much more polished and streamlined — big pluses in our book.

The new re-design won’t hit the web portal quite yet — Twitter is rolling out the new, new (another new?) Twitter.com over the next few weeks. Meanwhile, if you’d like to get in on the action now, the mobile.twitter.com, iOS and Android apps all feature the new look and can be had this very minute. Give them a go and let us know what you think!

Stocking Stuffer: Mario Pipe Coffee Mug.

  • December 8, 2011 11:20 am

Depending on your economic situation, $34 could either be stocking stuffer material or full-on gift fodder. Either way, we highly suggest you live up to your claims of being a gadget lover/nerd by picking up a Mario pipe-themed coffee mug such as the one you see above. The only thing better than a fresh cup ‘o joe early in the AM is a fresh cup ‘o joe straight from Mario’s beloved pipe. Of course, not having to wake up early enough to require coffee to get the juices flowing would the optimal solution. Meh.
