LG “Stepping Back” From Windows Phone Hardware As Globally It “Isn’t A Meaningful Figure”

If you were looking forward to a flagship LG Windows Phone 8 device,
keep waiting. It appears LG has gotten cold feet over the Windows
Phone hype. According to a an href="http://www.koreaherald.com/business/Detail.jsp?newsMLId=20120430001206">article
by the Korean Herald, citing an earnings conference call from last
week, LG is “stepping back” from Windows Phone and in turn will be
placing more emphasis on the Android platform. That said, the
spokesperson also stressed that “research and development on Windows
Phone would continue”. But even with the hopeful statement regarding
R&D, it’s hard to ignore this quote by the same spokesperson at the
same event:

“The total unit of Windows Phone sold in the global market is not a
meaningful figure.”

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will be in Seoul in the upcoming future to
talk with various business and industry representatives regarding
Windows Phone. LG will almost certainly be one of the companies
present. How Ballmer plans on winning over new Windows Phone supports
as well as keeping current supporters from defecting remains to be
seen. One thing is for certain. Microsoft needs to figure out
a way to build and maintain relationships with OEM partners.

All things considered, we’re bummed LG will likely be missing out on
Windows Phone 8 launch festivities as their initial WP offerings were
actually quite good. Here’s to hoping…
