Want to browse your Instagram feed in a more artistic fashion? Do you also happen to like Pinterest’s multi-column layout? You’re in luck, then, as a new iPad app that combines both worlds was just released.
Named “Pinstagram”, this mash-up app takes your Instagram timeline and arranges it in a Pinterest-style grid of multiple columns. From the image above (we haven’t tried it yet), we’re certainly liking how everything looks. The designers of Pinstagram definitely spent their time making a quality app. That said, where’s the iPhone version? Not coming, according to co-creator Pek Pongpaet. In Pongpaet’s eyes, the web (their first venture) and now the iPad were the two avenues where Instagram consumption was sorely lacking. Naturally, that’s where they aimed their resources. Building an iPhone client would, in Pongpaet’s own words, be “duplicating Instagram’s effort”. He also added that they would never “be a better Instagram than Instagram”, and that the default Instagram iPhone app was more or less perfect.
While we would love to see a form of Pinstagram hit the iPhone, we understand Pongpaet’s rationalizations for not attacking an iPhone app head on. Also, the multi-columned UI is very functional on the iPad. On the iPhone, however, it just doesn’t work very well even in landscape. There simply isn’t enough room.
