Wireless charging is one of the few golden things tech junkies such as ourselves hold near and dear to our hearts. While companies like (the former) Palm and Powermat have proven it can be done and made it cost effective, widespread availability is sadly nonexistent. Obtaining the holy grail of unobtrusive wireless charging on your device will require some extensive modding on your part. And that’s just what Tanveer, a “doctor by day, modder by night”, did — took matters into his own hands.
The iPhone 4S wireless charging mod he set out to complete requires disassembling a power mat case (for the magnet and charging component) as well as the iPhone (naturally) to insert the aforementioned goodies. Soldering skills a steady hand and some patience are also needed to make the Frankenstein surgery a success. But once done, the end result is a seemingly normal iPhone. Tanveer said the mod only added ~1mm of thickness to his phone. To us, the added 1mm is more than reasonable to give up for true, wireless charging.
If you’ve got a spare iPhone laying around and want to get crafty, why not give it a shot?
We don’t assume any responsibility should you actually choose to play doctor on your own device.
