Sony Confirms/Denies It Is “Discussing” Plans To Offer Windows Phone Devices

While Microsoft had a bit of a decent start with Windows Phone from various manufacturers back when it first launched, things cooled and Nokia became the only manufacturer that really cared. But things are progressing and Windows Phone’s momentum is continuing to improve. Manufacturers that bowed out previously are now looking to (or rumored to be looking to) revisit Microsoft’s mobile platform. And today, Sony Mobile’s European man of the hour, Pierre Perron, has confirmed that the company is in discussions regarding Windows Phone and potentially offering Windows Phone devices. The reasoning is sound. According to Perron, Sony “doesn’t want to be a single OS manufacturer”.

We are continuing our discussions with other partners, including Microsoft, as part of our partnership with this company on the broader Sony spectrum. [Working with Microsoft] is an interesting proposition for us in the PC environment, and we continue our engagement with them. We are exploring this as part of our discussion in mobile space too…”

It sounds like a beacon of hope for Microsoft and Windows Phone fans alike. But just as quick as new rumors saying Sony is making a Windows Phone comeback come to light, Sony’s CEO Kunimasa Suzuki’s hit back saying no Windows Phone devices are currently planned for release. Granted, companies are always trying to hide their hand and their real motives. Their could very well be some Windows Phone hardware behind the scenes if not in the pipeline for release, at least for testing purposes. Let’s hope Suzuki is trying to pull a fast one on us this time.
