When AT&T announced that they were doing away with their unlimited plan back in the summer of 2010, it made us sad. Capped data just isn’t a good solution for customers. Some joy could be found, however, in the fact that unlimited data users could be grandfathered into the future with their free-for-all data plans after capped data plans took effect.
Fast forward a few months and then AT&T’s anti-consumer habits grew stronger; they started throttling customers on unlimited plans who were in the “top 5%” of data users on their network. Ok. Fair enough. How much is that? AT&T wouldn’t tell us. Eventually, AT&T relented that the throttling figure was a sliding number based on location and current network load at any given point in time — a very vague response that frankly gives them the ability to do whatever they want, when they want. Based off of numerous personal accounts on Twitter, Facebook, individual websites, forums, etc., the original throttling threshold was in the 4-5 GB range.
And now in early 2012 AT&T is once again taking another chance to screw us over by lowering the threshold for data throttling threshold further…

Oh happy day!!!! The A5 untether has officially been released at greenpoison.com! So far, only the Mac OSX version is available, with Windows soon to follow. The Absinthe tool was developed by the Chronic Dev Team after so much hard work. A fun little fact, this jailbreak reuses both exploits from Corona + 5 others!
Obviously the GP site is getting flooded with people attempting to free their iPhone 4S’s and iPad 2s, so be patient. As soon as we can get access to the links, we’ll direct-link to them. We’ll update as soon as the Windows version is live. For Windows, see update 3.
Stay tuned for the CLI tool and redsn0w updates from the iPhone Dev Team.
Happy jailbreaking you OSX users! Head on over to greenpoison.com to pick up your free copy today
**If you happen to stumble upon any bugs, first, alert the devs responsible so they are aware of said bugs. Then, come back here and share it in the comments with the rest of us.
A big thank you to @pod2g, @planetbeing, @saurik, @pimskeks, @p0sixninja, @MuscleNerd and @xvolks. Without you guys we’d be locked away in Apple’s walled prison forever

Update 2
Getting an “Error establishing connection error” on the last part of the jailbreak? We did too. There’s a quick and simple fix. Go go Network > Settings > VPN and nudge the slider to “On”. After we did that our phone rebooted and replaced the Absinthe icon with the a blank icon. Tap it and the phone will respring. After that, you may have to restart your phone to get the actual Cydia icon to display correctly. (via: iDownloadblog)
Update 3
According to @p0sixninja, the Windows version of Absinthe and A5 jailbreak goodness will be launched “as soon as nikias gets home and rolls up the build”. (via: @p0sixninja.
Update 4
The iPhone Dev Team’s CLI tool has been released. This is basically used to debug specific issues.

In case you hadn’t heard, details regarding AT&T’s upcoming data plan revamp were leaked last night. For those that didn’t see it:
Smartphones
- 5 GB – $50/month (With mobile hotspot + tethering)
Tablets
While we’re slightly upbeat that we can now pay $5 more every month for 3 GB of data instead of $25 + $10 when we go over, it’s hardly a vicotry. What most people will gloss over is the fact that AT&T just made it $5 more expensive to own a smartphone on their network…

Three of the top Android manufacturers have unveiled their flagship phones going into the holidays. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is considered by many the benchmark thanks to its “pure Google” experience. Meanwhile the DROID RAZR and HTC Rezound feature their own unique software tweaks considering the hardware isn’t too terribly different — the same but different. Truth be told, as similar as the devices seem there are quite different in day-to-day use. Hop past the break as we compare the trifecta of Android devices…
Computing has experienced profound advancements in the decades since the first building-sized, vacuum tube-powered computers were developed in the mid-20th century. The huge leaps made in hardware, from the integrated circuit to the microprocessor to the continuing development of newer, smaller, faster components, have made sure that software development and distribution has changed rapidly as well. It’s mind boggling to think how far we’ve come in a relatively short 30-40 years…

Will Nokia successfully relaunch their future and survive the onslaught of Android and iOS? Was siding with WP7 the right choice? (Some of) these questions can be answered just after the break as we take a look at three new WP7 powered, Nokia designed handsets. Grab a brew (too early?) and get to it…

Many were upset by the passing of Steve Jobs on October 5th and understandably so. Jobs was a force in the tech world whose innovation will become legendary. Jobs did a lot with his time, but his death still leaves a bitter taste in many mouths. One can’t help but wonder what else was up this creative genius’s sleeve or what might have been if he had been able to continue innovating for just a few more years.
Jobs died from complications with pancreatic cancer. He had been diagnosed in 2003. Generally, the outlook for pancreatic cancer is grim but Jobs had a less-aggressive type. He did not receive radiation or chemotherapy but did have the tumor removed in 2004. The surgery was successful, but two years later Jobs still appeared gaunt when he delivered the 2006 keynote for the Worldwide Developer’s Conference. By 2008 stockholders were demanding information of Job’s health feeling that the value of Apple hinged on Job’s ability to perform. In response, and signature Jobs brashness, he ended a 2008 Apple Event with a slide reporting his blood pressure. Normalcy appeared to be returning…

Microsoft’s Zune is officially dead. But where we say good-bye to Microsoft’s in-house hardware we say hello to a new generation of PMP; a device whose soul purpose is no longer to simply entertain but communicate with the world around us too. Join us after the break as we take a walk back through time, admiring Microsoft’s Zune through the years…
