  • Android sorrows: Adobe Flash to only be supported on 2.1 and above. Dev community to remedy situation in 3..2..
    by Mike
    Posted February 9th, 2010 at 10:55 am
Well this is certainly disappointing news: The much talked about Adobe Flash 10.1 which is slated to drop in the near future on a bevy of mobile devices, will at least in the Android world, leave a fair chunk of users out in the cold. If you're Android device is running on 2.0 or lower, you will not gain Flash support! The reasoning behind this is some sort of "software-level access" that only 2.1 and future updates will include. Any developers out there please correct me if I'm wrong,...
  • BlackBerry Application Suite Pro leaked!
    by Mike
    Posted February 9th, 2010 at 1:20 am
Why would you want to pick up a copy of and install BlackBerry Application Suite on your Windows Mobile device? Well, if you wanted to give RIM's BlackBerry OS a try without jumping fully on board, this would be a way to do so. It's been quite awhile since the Application Suite was shown off on camera -- many months to be exact. At that time, RIM themselves mentioned that both BES and BIS versions were coming. See as how this leak is an unofficial release, the lack of a "complete" package is...
  • About that Android 2.1 update…Is it really that enticing?
    by Mike
    Posted February 8th, 2010 at 10:23 pm
By now I'm sure you've seen at least half a billion blog posts about the Motorola DROID getting the Android 2.1 OTA update starting sometime this week. I myself even touched on it earlier. At first, cries of joy, dancing in the streets half naked, and heavy drinking should follow, shouldn't it? But the cooler head in me steps back for a second. While I am genuinely happy for the Moto DROID user base as a whole, I find myself slightly disappointed. Sure we're getting 2.1, but two of the bigg...
  • Dalvik Turbe to make Android 3x faster and go longer on per charge to boot?
    by Mike
    Posted February 8th, 2010 at 7:38 pm
Oh sweet heavenly almighty power above. Can we have actually have our cake and eat it too? If Myriad, the clever minds behind Delvik Turbo, have their way, sugar highs and full stomachs will soon be coming to Android users. The core of Android is a special form of Java called Delvik. Delvik Turbo is an optimized form of said code. According to the claims of Myriad, the optimization is good for up to a 3x boost in the general speed of Android as well as dramatically increased battery life. ...
  • Official Droid 2.1 update details released. To exclude new homescreen/launcher and live wallpapers.
    by Mike
    Posted February 8th, 2010 at 10:19 am
Droid users: If you were hoping to get a nice replica of the Nexus One's 2.1 flavor of Android, sit down and get ready for some slightly disappointing news. The launcher on the Moto DROID official 2.1 OS uses the same pull-tab launcher, not the new 3D cube style of the Nexus One. Furthermore, the live wallpapers that are gimmicky yet cool are also MIA. It's not all bad however. For instance, multi-touch is now supported in the browser (finally) and the News/Weather Genie widget also come...
  • Windows Mobile 7 details start to trickle out. “Bag of hurt” in the making?
    by Mike
    Posted February 6th, 2010 at 10:03 pm
Anyone who spends even a smidgen of time in the mobile world knows that over the last couple of years, a lot has changed. As little as three years ago, Android, webOS, and the iPhone didn't exist. In the here and now, trying to imagine such a world is almost impossible. With each successive newcomer, Windows Mobile, the once defacto smartphone standard and mobile giant, has continued to slowly lose market share and relevance. Windows Mobile hasn't exactly been one of my favorite mobile O...
  • *The* custom Motorola DROID ROM to get: Sholes.info 2.0.1, ‘Nuff said!
    by Mike
    Posted February 4th, 2010 at 9:52 pm
If you've spent any amount of time here, you probably already know that I'm an Android junkie. In fact, I'd even say that I love the Android platform. I'm a huge tinkerer and tweaker. The beauty of Android is it is a modern tweakers dream -- the customization features of Windows Mobile with added style and features that are a mash up of BlackBerry, webOS, and even the iPhone. Being such a geek at heart means I'm always checking DROID forums looking for new apps, services, ROM's, themes, etc....
  • Symbian + 100% open source + Nokia C-series hype = relevance?
    by Mike
    Posted February 4th, 2010 at 12:36 am
Symbian, oh lovely Symbian. There for years, continually releasing small updates here and there yet ultimately overshadowed by the likes of Apple, Android, RIM, and now even Palm. It's not hard to argue that Symbian is kind of lacking when you look at the offerings form the larger players just named. Could marketing Symbian as "100% open source" help the mobile OS and it's image? It certainly couldn't hurt, that's for sure. But what exactly does it mean? Well, quite simply, anyone can n...
  • In the world of custom ROM’s, developer involvement, and the overall embetterment of the world, Motorola gets an F.
    by Mike
    Posted February 3rd, 2010 at 11:37 pm
Looking at the title, I make a pretty big assumption. From the get go I'm basically calling out Motorola for whippin' up a nice in-house fail whale of their own. But a fail whale to what? Android. The Motorola DROID was and still is the best Android device (hell, the best phone period) to come from Moto in a long, long time. So how are they failing? The US variant of the Moto Sholes is the Verizon DROID. For the last several months, I've been monitoring AllDroid, the DROID forums in par...
  • Bad news for Canadian Android fans: LG and Rogers updating LG GW 620 with “new” Android 1.6 *moldy* Donut.
    by Mike
    Posted February 3rd, 2010 at 10:36 pm
Ever been kicked between the legs, fallen on the top bar on a bike, or gotten hit with a stray kick ball right in the sweet spot during gym class? Yeah, we all have. It feels like your world is going to end. Along those same lines, I'm pretty sure that Canadian Android fans running on Rogers Wireless and toting an LG GW620 are feeling pretty much like what I just described. Any upgrade to "old" hardware is always a blessing. Manufactures and developers alike don't have any legal restra...
  • Windows Mobile 6.5.3 is the real deal. Real average.
    by Mike
    Posted February 2nd, 2010 at 5:36 am
Well well well. Lookie there. How's waking up on a conspicuously average Tuesday morning and hearing about a new version of Windows Mobile. No, it isn't any Windows Mobile 7. But for those in the WinMo world, it's something I guess. Slightly tweaked visuals, faster browser rendering/loading times, some bigger system wide navigation buttons, mutli-touch support, faster auto-rotation and some Arabic support are apparently grounds for a new set of numbers. So the old question still st...
  • “Max Sense” UI to finally make WinMo bearable to those with actual vision?
    by Mike
    Posted January 31st, 2010 at 8:34 pm
Tired of Windows Mobile's never changing UI and the cheap lipstick that Microsoft continues to pile on in copious amounts hoping to disguise the real ugliness underneath? You're not alone. In fact, one of the biggest complaints with Windows Mobile centers around it's looks. When you have an OS that hasn't really changed much in years, people are bound to notice. Thankfully we have the developer world to save us from the slip ups and failures of bigger corporations. Without further adue, ton...
  • HTC releases Sense UI ROM for HTC Magic
    by Mike
    Posted January 29th, 2010 at 8:03 am
Fancy the sleek and dark lines of the much loved and often talked about HTC Sense UI on Android? For HTC Magic fans anyway, today is your lucky day. HTC has let the ropes off of a Sense UI equipped ROM that is prepped, primed, and ready to go for all HTC Magic users. In case you were wondering, the accompanying numbers are ROM 3.05.401.3. For users here in the states: Any T-Mo fans completely stoked on this new found facelift or is Sense UI not quite your forte? Download the HTC Magic S...
  • Microsoft CFO confirms Windows Mobile 7 at MWC
    by Mike
    Posted January 28th, 2010 at 9:39 pm
Windows Mobile diehards, all 13 of you gather 'round. Microsoft's CFO Peter Klein has given us all a grand display of his loose lips by sharing that Mobile World Congress in Barcelona will in fact be the home of the world's first WinMo 7 unveiling. Can anyone say saweet?! For a quick refresher, WinMo 7 will bring with it legitimate support for capacitive screens, a heavily *fingers crossed* reworked Windows Mobile UI, and speed/navigation improvements across the board. All-in-all, for s...
  • Rough Microsoft product outline has Windows 8 coming in mid to late 2011. Think it’ll happen?
    by Mike
    Posted January 28th, 2010 at 1:11 pm
Ya ya I know, we've seen countless posts about so called "leaked release dates" for Windows 8. Why all the hubub about Windows 8 when Windows 7 -- easily Microsoft's best OS yet -- was just released not more than a few months ago? It's simple, even though Windows 7 is Microsoft's best ever and even bests Apple's Snow Leopard in some areas, it isn't anything to write home about. What I mean is, there isn't any feature or features that make me want to drop a couple hundred dollars on it. Most ...
  • Android or WinMo? Gen. Y DualBOOT says “Both”.
    by Mike
    Posted January 27th, 2010 at 7:25 am
WinMo isn't doing so hot right now but Microsoft hopes to remedy that with WinMo 7 which we may or may not be seeing in a few short weeks at MWC. Android on the other hand is enjoying a massive growth in popularity. Both OS's do share a common trait however -- they're easily tweakable and available on a variety of hardware. If you are having a hard time choosing between one or the other, take comfort in knowing that the answer to "Which OS?" will soon be easy -- Both! The ever talented fol...
  • HTC does well with Android geeks. Releases Hero source code.
    by Mike
    Posted January 22nd, 2010 at 1:06 pm
Part of the joy in owning an Android device is that it is so customizable. I'm probably more of a tinkerer than your typical Android user. Think you compare? I have roughly 25 different ROM's/backups on my SD card so I can jump back and forth between various ROM's when I please. Obsession comes to mind... Along the same line, users of the Android platform can somewhat easily take ROM's from other devices, tweak a few things and get them up and running on other devices fairly quickly. Loo...
