Grand Rapids (MI) residents: Do you feel something in the air? If so (and even if not) that new sense of “something newness” is due to the new 1700MHz band of 3G that is pulsating through your town’s buildings, vegetation, and human bodies. Woot! There’s nothing like the feeling of the wind in your hair and the blinding sense that 3G speeds bring to your mobile device.
With each new city that is graced with T-Mo’s 3G goodness I find myself curious as to real world speeds. We all know what 3G is supposed to operate at but often times life has other plans. So do a quick test, take a screenshot, and leave it in the comments below. I’d much appreciate it.
**Word is that Tulsa, Oklahoma was also seeing 3G speeds today however as of writing it seems to have been a false alarm (IntoMobile). Still, your time is due before the end of the year. Your wait — if it is in fact still a “wait” — isn’t much longer.

If using a credit/debit card to purchase Android apps on your T-Mobile branded handset was beginning to become a bit much for you, take comfort in knowing that help is on the way. Starting today, T-Mobile USA is rolling out the carrier billing feature for Android smartphones allowing users to bill Android Market purchases to your cellphone bill instead of a credit/debit card. Much like Verizon is doing for the Moto Droid and HTC Eris, the OTA update will be rolled out slowly — much slower than Verizon’s staggered delay — as T-Mobile has stated December 30th as the last day in which the updates will be pushed out.
How much will you really use it? I’m all for consolidating bills so having one less piece of paper or email to keep track of is a god send. Of course it could also cause binge app buying and a stroke once your receive your bill and realize that a few $1.99 apps aren’t expensive. It’s the other 54 $1.99 apps that got you in trouble. Moderation folks. Moderation.
If that slow roll out schedule mentioned above still has you a bit peeved, don’t fret. The Android 2.0.1 update for Verizon was made available for manual update by the ever talented Android community a mere 24 hours after it began rolling out. With T-Mobile customers facing several weeks of waiting themselves, a small thing called “motivation” is no doubt putting several crafty developers to work already — figuring out how they can manually upgrade their phones on their own time if possible.
Sound off below.

**Attention South Bend/Notre Dame, Indiana:
T-Mobile has officially rolled out 3G to your area! Why have am I highlighting one small midwestern town in northern Indiana? Well, for starters I live there. Second, back when I had TMO a couple years ago and all of their 3G talk was just starting, I was eagerly anticipating this fine day. For now I’m running on Verizon because of the Droid. But just like many of you, I’m not partial to any one carrier. Whoever offers the coolest phone at the time will get my dollars. So while I can’t officially test or benefit from TMO’s new set of faster legs, I can at least pass the information on to my fellow local readers. You know the drill — grab your TMO 3G loving handset and fire it up…

So Big Red is like a disease to you and you can’t fathom moving to Euro-land just to purchase and *fully* use a Euro-spec Droid Milestone? No worries dear reader as a screenshot showing a reported “dev only” section of a MotoBLUR site shows something very interesting indeed. See that circled bit of info? It points to a TMO edition of the Motorola Sholes -> Droid. If a GSM version exists outside of the country, it isn’t hard to believe a GSM version would come state side. On one had it would make sense for AT&T to get it because they have a much larger 3G network. Of course if you divide by the sum of suck, you more or less walk away with TMO having the larger, useful 3G network. Let’s not forget that TMO is in love with Android. So far, AT&T hasn’t put forth any emotion in regards to Android. Sad indeed. But I digress. TMO users hoping for a second touchscreen + qwerty slider now have something to bank on in the near future. Holiday even?

Well that was fast. Just a mere day or two ago we wrote about Android developer units getting builds of 1.6 (Donut) and that if all went well a public release would follow soon after. I didn’t realize they meant that soon after. Early adopters (that means you G1 owners), or more importantly, “select G1′s” will get the 1.6 update pushed to them sometime today with the newer, more touchy feely brother (MyTouch) having to wait another 24hrs. or so. The staggered rollout will give TMO some control if any bugs pop up. Bricking the entire U.S. Android community isn’t exactly something to boast about. All of this surprise info is coming from TMO News whom I might add is fairly spot on with their information. Though even this seems too good to be true — and we all know the saying that goes along with that feeling now don’t we? Still, it would be pretty sweet if TMO was in fact on the up and up with 1.6. If so, keep up the speed and will to succeed TMO. It’s mighty nice.
Anyone care to confirm/deny this supposed rollout?
**Update: T-Mobile U.S.A. has confirmed the update is ongoing:
The rollout of Android 1.6 (Donut) to T-Mobile’s G1 and myTouch 3G customers is now underway, and provides new features and software enhancements. The update also includes an important fix for isolated instances of system reboots after dialing 911. We have worked with Google and HTC on a solution, and the rollout of Android 1.6 is being accelerated to ensure the system reboot fix is rapidly delivered to our customers.
The over-the-air update will be delivered to all G1 and myTouch customers in the coming days. Given the system reboot fix, we strongly encourage all users to install Android 1.6 when prompted to do so.
Regarding new and enhanced features, Android 1.6 includes:
* An improved Android Market experience that makes it easier to discover great applications.
* An integrated camera, camcorder, and gallery interface.
* Updated Voice Search, with faster response and deeper integration with native applications, including the ability to dial contacts.
* Updated search experience that make it easier to search various sources, such as browser bookmarks & history, contacts, and the web, directly from the home screen.
Additional details on Android 1.6 can be found at http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-1.6-highlights.html

The much anticipated Moto Cliq with Blur and it’s U.S. Carrier friend, T-Mobile have one might cool device on their hands. While a more “professional” device still has me holding out on Android, the robust messaging and social networking integration is pretty tempting. Enough daydreaming, the Motorola Cliq will come to T-Mobile “before the holidays” with:
- 3.1″ 320 x 480 pixel display
- WCDMA 900/1700/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps (Category 7/8), EDGE, GPRS Class 12, AGPS
- 1420 mAh battery/6 hours “continuous” runtime
- 5-megapixel camera w/ auto-focus
The list of specs goes on though the ones highlighted above are the ones I think you’ll cherish most. Still, if words are to your liking, check out the Motorola Cliq page and have at it. The possibilities with the tight messaging/social networking integration is definitely the staple of this device. While the Cliq + Blur won’t bring the company back into the premium spotlight, it’s a notable start and a mighty good one at that. That MOTOBLUR Skin on top of Android while not #1 in my book is definitely a close second to HTC’s Sense UI. Keep wowing us Moto…

The wait for a 3G BlackBerry on T-Mobile USA has been a long, long, long road. Watching carrier after carrier steal all of the good speedy devices can certainly become discrouraging after many cold shoulders. However, TMO USA users caught a second wind when it was announced that an upcoming version of the Onyx, the BlackBerry 9700 would be coming to T-Mobile — with 3G no less! Building upon those previous known tidbits, a claimed reliable source to TMO news is reporting that the TMO 3G toting BlackBerry 9700 could be coming as early as the first week of November. Now, since that is still two months out, and the fact that this date isn’t set in stone or verified by any major parties means the legitimacy is up in the air. Still, it gives TMO users a reason to stick around just a tad longer. Bouncing off the walls yet?
