Poll of the Day: Have You Bought Into the 3D Craze Yet?

  • December 1, 2010 6:31 am

For today’s (and honestly, the next day or two) poll, we’re looking at 3D. Back at CES 2010 in early January, 3D was the hot ticket item. Every TV manufacturer and countless smaller companies had some sort of 3D device or service on display. How much we see of said technology at CES 2011 coming up in a mere month will be a good indicator of how well the market has accepted this 3rd dimension. Personally, I haven’t bought into it yet. From the products that I’ve seen and tested, I came away with the overall consensus that it isn’t that great and instead, more of a marketing gimmick. But I’d love to hear what you have to say.

So take a second today to head on over to the top right of the sidebar and cast your vote!

Verizon/Motorola 2.1 update producing worse 2D graphics performance than 2.0.1?

  • April 4, 2010 2:16 pm

Well this certainly would be classified as bad…

Feeling all bleeding edge with your freshly updated DROID 2.1 update that recently rolled out? On the surface it may have a few new bells and whistles to make both function and look mildly prettier, but under the surface, there seems to be a possible bug that is destroying graphics performance. And this isn’t some minor brush it under the rug type of speed hit either.

Discovered by the developer behind TesujiGames, the issue was found when running a particular frame rate testing app called LagTest (Direct download link) used to test app performance. Downloading the linked app and running it yourself will quickly net a similar experience as highlighted in the video below. I went ahead and ran lagtest on my rooted 2.0.1 device and compared it to my friends freshly updated 2.1 DROID. Sure enough, just like the video below shows, his “updated” DROID was running a solid 40% slower at all times and peaked at roughly 55%.

For as many times as the 2.1 update was delayed for apparent bugs, it’s odd (and a shame none the less) that something as glaring and important such as graphics performance was overlooked. Video and graphs below highlight the sadness… Anyone else seeing this speed issue?

I spent a pretty good deal of time searching through various Android forums and there are quite a bit of naysayers as to the validity of this claim. The general consensus is that the results are “bunk” seeing as how the program “Lagtest” itself isn’t very reliable. So there may not even be any real issue at all with the update as it is more of an issue with the app itself and/or the developer claiming there was a problem in the first place. I’ll let you guys decide.

Sonic 4 detailed in pictures! Coming this summer.

  • March 19, 2010 5:38 am

Call me a child, a nerd, a dork — whatever. Sonic the Hedgehog is the sh*t! Back in the SEGA Genesis hayday, this little blue creature kept me occupied for hours on end many a weekend. No joke. So when word spread of a new, revamped Sonic, I was beyond ecstatic.

The new Sonic the Hedgehog while still a 2D scroller (nice retro touch) is still a sight for sore eyes, with a much more polished UI and fluid gameplay. Starting this summer, the little blue hedgehog will be fully available to the masses on WiiWare, PSN, XBL, and some “mystery platform”. (SEGA getting a second wind…?!) But, starting now, any hyped up nerds (such as myself) can get in on the action early and download the music from Act 1: Splash Hill. Excited yet?

Cowboys HD giganta-tron does 3D like dragster without brakes, skydiver without parachute…

hd-scoreboard

Remember that massive HD TV that just mere months ago was winning praise from tech enthusiasts and sports buffs alike for it’s bigger than life size? The glory of being number one is often short lived. And as we’ve learned from Tiger Wood’s recent unfolding, any long stay at the top often ends unfavorably and scandalous. But let’s get back to tech shall we?

That massive HD monitor at Cowboy central had already conquered all other HD displays in the world so why not try for another award — world’s biggest 3D TV. Unlike the first award, this one was an utter fail. The problem was that HDlogix — the company supplying the 3D prowess for the display — relied on those dorky 3D glasses to get the desired effect. And of course, a good chunk (read: pretty much everyone) didn’t bother even putting the goofy goggles on which in turn caused them to see nothing but blur when trying to watch the only staple of the Cowboys football team worth watching (the cheerleaders) on screen. With the massive amounts of blur came equally massive amounts of booing from the crowd. Further complicating matters, those who actually bothered to use the glasses claimed the display and 3D picture combo caused ample amounts of nausea. Needless to say, seven minutes later and it was back to plain jane 2D viewing mode.

What about glasses free 3D technology? I mean, it’s all the rage currently. HDlogix has the know-how, just not enough to scale it up the the gargantuan proportions of the Cowboy’s giganta-tron sized display. Needless to say, it just goes to show you how much glasses free 3D technology needs to be improved. Sporting some nifty 3D goggles in 1982 was cool and all but this is 2009 people. Let the technology do the dimension shifting work, not some crazy contraption we strap around out head.

Maybe next year…(homage to the Cubs…and after this season the Bears.)
