**Attention South Bend/Notre Dame, Indiana:

T-Mobile has officially rolled out 3G to your area! Why have am I highlighting one small midwestern town in northern Indiana? Well, for starters I live there. Second, back when I had TMO a couple years ago and all of their 3G talk was just starting, I was eagerly anticipating this fine day. For now I’m running on Verizon because of the Droid. But just like many of you, I’m not partial to any one carrier. Whoever offers the coolest phone at the time will get my dollars. So while I can’t officially test or benefit from TMO’s new set of faster legs, I can at least pass the information on to my fellow local readers. You know the drill — grab your TMO 3G loving handset and fire it up…

Lovers of the speedy wireless spectrum that belongs to T-Mobile U.S.A. have some new breathing room and grasslands to stretch their legs on. Specifically, T-Mobile customers in Columbia, Durham, Greensboro, Raleigh, and Winston-Salem, N.C. as well as Greenville, S.C., and Escondido and Oceanside, CA should be noticing greatly improved browsing speeds as well as a nifty “3G”/”H”/”U” symbol on their phone’s display signifying the up tick in speeds. Even though they’re a bit late to the game, it is nice none the less. Cut the cords and browse away.

With all of the negative publicity AT&T has been receiving the past few….months…there is a small glimmer of hope for the often knocked, rarely praised cellular giant. Their promise to bring more reliable and further reaching 3G coverage by way of the 850MHz band is starting to come to fruition. Starting with downtown Atlanta, Georgia and parts of Fulton, DeKalb, North Fulton, Cobb, Gwinnett, and Fayette counties, users should now experience better indoor 3G coverage as well as better voice and data quality connections. So far, the number cell sites that have been flipped is up to 540 making making for an image that they are infact moving at a brisk clip. They aren’t taking a break however as by the end of 2009, several more cities are scheduled to get the ‘ol switcheroo treatment including but not limited to New York and San Francisco. Are you waking up a tad more pleased with AT&T this morning?

From the horses mouth…

Even though poor T-Mobile is lagging a pretty decent clip behind the other three big carriers in regards to 3G speeds and network size, they are none the less chuggin’ along with their rollout plans.  Next up on the list ‘o cities for the T-Mo 3G rollout centers around the more “frontiers” states out west.  In particular:

  • Colorado Springs, Colorado
  • Pueblo, Colorado
  • Denver, Colorado (expansion of current coverage area
  • Des Moines, Iowa
  • Austin, Texas (expansion of current coverage area)
  • San Antonio, Texas (expansion of current coverage area)
  • Salem, Oregon

If you happen to be lucky enough to reside in any one of those cities, get ready to enjoy the higher standards of living that mobile broadband speeds bring to you and yours.  Are you west coast TMO users getting a little more excited?  I know I am…and I don’t even have TMO anymore.  It’s all about competition folks.

T-Mo fans and speed freaks rejoice if your name is on the list above as it supposedly includes the cities to be graced with a little 1700 MHz T-Mo love the second through fourth quarters of 2009.  Don’t dump your hard earned money that you were saving for dinner with the wife quite yet as the list above isn’t yet confirmed.  However, it looks pretty  legit so I would hazard a guess and say you could at least head to the bank.  T-Mo better keep the pace up and moving fast as possible…4G is just around the corner.  Please T-Mo, be on the leading edge of tech in the future.

Chinese Mobile subscribers have reason to celebrate today as China Mobile announced that over the next 2 years they will be spending US$8.6 billion in order to add around 60,000 new towers covering 238 cities!  Currently CM has around 20,000 towers.  The Chinese government was reported saying that “the rollout would help stimulate the economy.”  Definitely a big upgrade!  Finally widespread and better 3G coverage for the people of China.
