Bittwesweet news for BlackBerry 9650 this morning — OS 6 has been spotted on your beloved VZW Bolds just as RIM had promised it would. However, there are a few caveats to deal with. First and foremost, just because RIM said it could happen, doesn’t mean it will. Verizon has the latest and greatest in testing. This we can see. But it is completely up to Big Red to actually go one step further push the update to end users. Of course, VZW has opened up quite a bit over the last couple of years. As such, there’s no real indication they’re going to keep slightly older hardware out of the loop.
Second, and perhaps more worrisome is that the official OS 6 toting 9650 in the possession of BBLeaks is showing some fairly high amounts of lag, even with 512MB of RAM. Again, worrisome news for 9650 owners, but even worse news for 9700 and Pearl 3G owners of whom both are also suspected to get OS 6 as well — and with half the memory to boot. With half the memory of the already laggy 9650, OS 6 on the 9700 and Pearl 3G doesn’t seem as great as it once did.
Hopefully RIM can tweak the OS more to run on these few supported classics. Of the 9650, 9700, and Pearl 3G, who’s planning on upgrading the OS and who’s jumping all the way in by getting the 9800 Torch?
So we’ve seen the new BlackBerry OS 6 and the shiny new Torch hardware that it runs on, but what about the rest of the CrackBerry nation? Take it for what it is folks, but only three models of currently available BlackBerries will be able to upgrade to OS 6 goodness — BlackBerry 9650, 9700, and Pearl 3G. Only three models seems pretty disappointing given the amount of BlackBerry hardware currently available. Then again, RIM has handsets ranging from bargain basement econo-berries to their flagship gems such as the 9700. Claiming they should be able to stuff OS 6 (and honestly it is a big update) onto the lowest of low-end hardware is a bit naive.
I’m just glad some old hardware is getting a prolonged life. But let’s not kid ourselves, the Torch is a hot piece of hardware. Anyone going to forgo upgrading to the new Torch and install OS 6 on your aging berry once the update is released from your carrier?
Get out your salt shakers folks. It’s that time again. Today’s grain-o-salt rumor revolves around the BlackBerry 9700. Specifically, a refresh of the 9700. From what can be gathered at this point, it looks like the refresh will be extremely minor — a bump up to 512MB of RAM, 5-megapixel camera, and OS 6.0 on board.
Granted, the jump from 256MB to 512MB is large jump in the smartphone world. Though it’s the rest of the hardware (and BlackBerry OS overall) that doesn’t necessarily make the best of all that power. Still, for someone who’s looking at picking up a 9700, perhaps it’ll be worth your while to hold off a bit longer. We’ll see what comes of this.
Would the aforementioned hardware and software changes keep you from upgrading?

Hipsters and haters of the darkness unite, RIM has your BlackBerry ready and waiting in the wings. The king pin BlackBerry (9700) will soon be dropping on Rogers in a rather calming hue of white. Much like the older 9000 Bold before it, a complete 180 in the color department may not seem like much if anything. But to some, it’s the last hurdle in actually picking up said phone. I prefer the sleeker more mysterious lines of a phone dressed in all black. Though I can certainly see the draw to white phones too. From the Rogers screenshot above, an actual street date isn’t yet available. So, be sure to check back often for any more information.
With a handful of distinctly different BlackBerries set to drop in the coming weeks, choosing what you want and determining what kind of Berry you are may be harder than once thought. Think a white 9700 would compliment your lifestyle?

The original “Bold” for CDMA users — the BlackBerry Tour — was easily the best CDMA BlackBerry yet. It had gorgeous physical looks and a pretty tight list of hardware internals. The release of the 9700 soon after however cause many to overlook it and it’s “supremacy” with WiFI and the now standard trackpad taking over for the weathered and worn trackball. The Tour 2 as it used to be known, isn’t that big of an upgrade for existing Tour owners, but none the less is still the Berry to get for CDMA users.
Now, onto that name…
The Tour 2 has been called such so far as that was the only logical naming scheme we could all think of (1 does come after 2 in most cases…). Thanks to a leaked 5.0 build for the 9650, we now know that hauncho the Tour 2 will never be. Instead, the lightly revamped though largely improved successor to the Tour will actually be called the Bold 9650. How’s that name fit for size? Do you like “Tour 2″ better or is “Bold 9650″ where it’s at as it allows it to sit up there all high and mighty with the likes of the kingpin 9700?

Pwn2Own in years past has been staged to completely rip apart the security of modern computer operating systems and their browsers. Seeing as how that is now old news and taking into account more and more people are using smartphones, which are just as capable as desktop computers to browse the web, sets up a new recipe for security disasters. So it’s no surprise that the main highlight of Pwn2Own this year is focused on mobile browsers from the “big guys”, aka, iPhone 3GS, BlackBerry 9700 Bold, a new Nokia device running the latest version of Symbian, and an Android device.
If you think you’ve got the chops to hack your way to victory, perhaps you’ll want to enter into this event. Doing so will net you $60k just for exploiting one of the aforementioned systems above with each subsequent tool that can be “executed without any user interaction” bringing in an additional $15k. It adds up folks. It’s one of those times where being an extremely good hacker and breaking systems is actually a good thing. Think you can do it?

Products release dates getting pushed back are never fun at all. Starting with a sentence like that, you know that something now so smile inducing is following. Word is that the much lusted after T-Mobile BlackBerry 9700 decided to hold of it’s coming out party until November 16th. You know T-Mobile better watch out. Starting a string of delays isn’t fun for anyone and this delay in particular is starting to remind me of the delay after delay style launch AT&T’s Bold suffered from. We can only hope this isn’t a Bold delay launch part 2.
The reason for the delay as well as official confirmation is still unknown. All I do know is that this is going to upset a few CrackBerry/Tmo users who were waiting for some 3G/UMA BlackBerry goodness.
And yes, I’ve sent the now standard email to T-Mo asking for some clarification. We’ll see how it goes.

Seen the pictures of the White BlackBerry Bold floating around? It looks might sexy indeed. This White Knight of sorts has a release date of October 18th — just a few days away. But I have to ask, is anyone really going to buy it? With the Onyx coming out a mere handful of days after this White Bold, it seems like a waste of resources and marketing if you ask me. Not to mention, spec for spec and looks considered, the 9700/Onyx is a much more refined and wholly more attractive Berry. The only reason I can see someone choosing the now old Bold over the Onyx is (1) simply for the white color and (2) for the Bold’s slightly wider, larger screen.
Even though the Bold’s screen is larger, the Onyx has a higher resolution screen. But since the displays we’re talking about here are measured in single digit inches, the minor differences in size and resolution are negligible. Perhaps RIM should have skipped trying to milk old hardware for everything its worth and instead released both a black and white version of the upcoming 9700/Onyx hmm? So the question stands:
- Who’s going to buy a White BlackBerry Bold over the new 9700/Onyx?
Sound off in the comment section.

Even though we in nerd land all know that a T-Mobile branded BlackBerry 9700/Bold/Onyx exists and is coming to the US, GSM based carrier, unofficial official confirmation is always a nice thing to have before laying your pretty little heads down for a restful slumber. The unofficial confirmation comes by way of Al Sacco of CIO and a not so secret little email from TMO USA PR which stated:
The BlackBerry ‘Onyx’ sports a premium experience and design with a high-gloss black finish and leather grain detail on the back. Boasting features such as high-speed 3G Web browsing, Wi-Fi calling, visual voicemail and support for corporate and personal e-mail options, the ‘Onyx’ will satisfy all your on-the-go needs. Also the phone comes preloaded with mobile applications from BlackBerry App World, including Amazon MP3 store for quick and easy music downloads and TeleNav GPS Navigator for turn-by-turn directions.
As you can see, the 9700 isn’t officially called a Bold. Maybe it won’t ever be and will continue on with the Onyx moniker. Regardless, this just gives even more weight to an eventual 9700 release on America’s lesser GSM giant. Yay?
