MSI’s external graphics card promises vastly improved graphics for laptops wanting a little more…

  • May 25, 2010 6:56 am

Lug around a laptop — a desktop replacement/gaming laptop no less — and longing for something a little more substantial in the GPU department? Gaming oriented laptops certainly have a leg up on the standard laptop affair when it comes to graphical power. But even then, a high-end laptop GPU doesn’t really hold a candle to it’s desktop sibling.

Even more extreme — any self respecting gamer wouldn’t even think of gaming on a netbook.

But with MSI’s help, that’s exactly where the MSI GUS is setting it’s sights…

GameStop to sell stand alone 250GB Xbox hard drive add-on against Microsoft’s wishes?

  • March 3, 2010 3:43 am

Contrary to verbiage from Microsoft indicating otherwise, at least GameStop has figured out what makes customers happy. more storage, specifically 250GB worth of storage as the popular used game retailer has a stand alone 250GB Xbox 360 drive marked for release on 3/23 online.

Microsoft as of late has pushed out several special edition Xbox 360 console bundles that usually feature some nifty paint job and larger hard drive. In the case of the Modern Warfare 2 bundle, a larger 250GB was included. More bundles of similar and probably even larger sizes will come later on down the pipeline. But what about people who simply want the larger drive for their current 360?

No beans says Microsoft. Obviously they’d rather have you spend $400 more on a new system just for that drive if it really matters to you. Meanwhile, they pass it off as “keeping these special edition Xbox units…*special*”. A valid reasoning for sure, but no less frustrating and stupid for consumers.

The drives show as $129.99 with a lack of any supporting details. Then again, there’s still a good three weeks before these are set to be available for actual sale so I’m sure more will follow, In the meantime, we’ll have to sit and wonder exactly where or how GameStop is getting special dibs/ripping 250GB drives off of returned “special” bundles…

ZooZen Xbox 360 case turns your sleek, white gaming machine into a sleek, black brick.

  • December 5, 2009 2:19 pm

zoozen-xbox-360-caseSeeing the word “brick” in the title should frighten you. While often used to depict something unsightly or aesthetically unappetizing, the ZooZen Xbox 360 case is actually pretty darn nice to look at. What exactly is the ZooZen 360 case? Well — it’s a case that snaps all around your Xbox 360. It’s shiny, black, and considerably increases your 360′s footprint. But it isn’t all just about looks. ZooZen went ahead and stuffed a few extra cooling fins inside for good measure. Now that Microsoft has employed a smaller design for the 360′s processor, meltdowns are less likely. Still, it never hurts. What do you think? Usually increasing the size of something isn’t exactly a good thing. But ZooZen has something here. Now if they can only make it possible for add-ons such as memory cards and other accessories to have access to the 360′s front facing ports it’s golden. Whataya say? Willing to fatten up your ‘box for a more spacey black sheen?

GameStop testing the Digital Download waters come 2010

Being a used game retailer has it’s advantages. Gamers love new stuff. Because of that one way to fund their new lusts is by selling off their old. Awesome concept and business model until you consider more and more people are downloading games — that which you can’t return. GameStop, looking to keep from fading out of existence has announced via the BMO Capital Management Digital Entertainment conference that in earl 2010, the company will try it’s hand this whole digital marketplace. This test won’t allow full-on game downloads mind you. So if you were hoping to score a deal (as is usual with used game purchases) you’re out of luck for now. Aside from no full game downloads, you can take comfort in knowing their venture isn’t for naught. Game add-ons and/or game updates will be the first leg of Game Stops digital testing.

According to GameStop, the service will blend in with the PSN and Xbox Live Services. However, because full games aren’t going to be available, critics are already dissatisfied with the idea. I can see their frustration and share the same feelings for the most part. If you’re going to go digital, go all the way. Don’t do this I’m kinda in, kinda out type of approach. It’s a valiant effort by a company so entrenched in physical media but an absolute failure when all things digital are concerned. GameStop’s Chief Operating Officer, Paul Raine, stated at the the same conference that “there isn’t a huge market for full game downloads yet”, and that they fill at this time, the update/add-on route is the way to go. Really? I’m pretty sure those with speedier internet connections would much rather download their games and not have to go to the store to pick them up.

But that’s just me.Since it obviously isnt 2010 yet, I’m hoping that those in charge will re-think their decision and shake the right hands that need shaking to get full game downloads into the program. Otherwise it’s just a waste of time. But that’s just my opinion. There could be some huge market for game-add ons and updates that somehow isn’t being answered by the uber popular Xbox Live service or PSN. What do you think? Optimistic or pessimistic?

Steve Ballmer’s loose lips reveal upcoming Xbox 360 Blu-ray external drive? [Update]

  • October 22, 2009 5:41 am

**Update: Ya, not so much. ‘ol Stevie was off his rocker and was probably confused. That’s what Major Nelson is saying anyway.

Thank you Mr. Steve “The Balms” Ballmer for your clownish persona and loose lips. You may have just given us some hope for ways of enjoying HD content other than Xbox live. In an interview with Gizmodo’s Wilson Rothman, Steve Ballmer says the following when questioned about the potential for Blu-ray support coming to the Xbox line:

Well I don’t know if we need to put Blu-ray in there—you’ll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.

Well, cat’s outta the bag on that one. While PR is busy with damage control and trying to hopelessly conceal any Xbox Blue-ray support by way of the typical “we have no plans excuse”, we can simply turn to Steve Ballmer for any undying questions we have. The Balms speaks no lie.

Of course, Ballmer isn’t exactly the most eloquent speaker nor does he seem to always have a firm grasp on internal operations. This revelation by Ballmer could also be a simple statement taken the wrong way. For example, claiming that we’d have to have an external Blu-ray drive could simply mean that there is absolutely “Zero” chances of every seeing the most requested feature offered internally.

Clearly there is plenty of room for interpretation and speculation. I would love to see a Blu-ray drive as I have a growing collection. Though being a digital person myself, the digital only method makes more sense. Who wants to be tied to a physical format? Of course, if I’m to truly embrace going completely digital, companies and “content owners” are going to have to stop being the assholes they currently are and allow to copy my legally paid for digital content. In reality, I do it anyway. So they don’t have to let me. Though doing so without fear of prosecution might help me sleep at night.
