Mystery Samsung Device Spied Near Poland R&D Center. Sporting 5″+ 720p Display?

  • August 30, 2011 6:32 am

Ah rumors. Don’t you love’em? Today’s juicy rumor of the day originates from Warsaw, Poland and features a spy shot of an unnamed, mystery Samsung device. The tipster who sent the image to GSM Arena claims the device in question has Galaxy S design cues as well as a massive 5″+ display. Nothing else is known.

Is this really a next-gen gigantor phone/mini-tablet from Samsung or merely some other device? Given the proximity to Samsung’s own R&D center we’d certainly love to let our minds wonder. But doing so has gotten us into trouble (and let down) a time or two before. Nonetheless, we’ve heard rumors of a massive device with 720p (1280 x 720) resolution coming from someone for quite some time now.

If you’re still on the fence, there’s another shot — with an admittingly weird look — just after the break…

AMOLED Display Won’t Be Coming To iPad 3.

  • June 2, 2011 7:06 am

As much as we’d love to see some crisp AMOLED love on Apple’s line of iPad tablets, a new report from DigiTimes cites production volumes that are still too low to meet Apple’s increasing demand despite Samsung’s new 5.5g facility starting construction ahead of schedule. Add to that the relatively unproven technology in the tablet space and AMOLED-equipped iPad 3s are even less likely.

If Apple somehow pulled a fast one and did decide to use AMOLED on the iPad 3, we’d likely see delays that make the current iPad supply shortages look like a buffet.

Flexible AMOLED Displays From Samsung Coming to CES.

  • December 30, 2010 7:50 pm

Tablets of every shape, size, and color may be the current fad in the tech media, but Samsung has another gadget up their sleeve that they’ll be showing off — flexible AMOLED displays! According to their press release, the displays that we’ll see at CES measure in at 4.5-inches in size with WVGA resolution (800 x 480). No other information is available at this point, but as we’ve said many times tonight: check back next week when we hit the CES show floor!

Samsung Mobile Display To Unveiling 7″ AMOLED Display With 1200 x 600 Resolution!

  • November 3, 2010 8:11 am

OLED-backed screens may be one of the highest sought after item for mobile devices in the age of battery-conscious, eye candy loving consumers, but that will soon change. This November 10th-12th at FPD-International, Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) is going to unveil their latest and greatest — a 7″ 1,200 x 600 AMOLED display. That’s WXVGA for all of you not familiar with screen-res alphabet soup specs. The most promising thing, however, is that this seemingly gorgeous display is coming to market sooner than many may think — 2011.

Looks like the next crop of tablets will have some truly awesome ocular properties. (We can’t wait for someone to cram a smaller version into a phone…)

(Thanks, Eric)

Toshiba puts OLED mass production plans on ice.

  • October 1, 2010 11:48 am

The joint venture between Toshiba and Panasonic, Toshiba Mobile Display, appears to have a $191.6 million failure on their hands. According to statements made by Toshiba Mobile Display spokesperson Masahiro Kume:

“The plan (for mass-production) is currently frozen. We’ll review the production plan again from scratch.”

The mass production he’s speaking of concerns the $191.6 million investment in OLED mass production the company was gearing up for. Looks like all of those videos we’ve seen of AMOLED displays not really being all that different (read: better) than LCD and Super LCD screens is starting to hurt interest in OLED technology. It’s quite a shame really, because in certain conditions AMOLED does provide a noticeable improvement over traditional LCD counterparts.

With that said, it’ll be some time before we see AMOLED jumping ahead of LCD in terms of usage numbers as Tohisba Mobile Display is redirecting resources to current higher demand LCD screens. Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be…

Samsung Galaxy Pro becomes the Sprint Epic 4G.

  • June 28, 2010 6:27 am

Can a new Android phone by Samsung really be called “Epic”? The fact that it has 4G is a good start. Kicking the phone to the side to reveal a rather spacious 5-row sliding keyboard doesn’t hurt either. But are those two features alone enough to conquer them all?

Depends on what you look for in a phone. Though, the reported 1GHz “Hummingbird” processor, 1GB RAM/512 ROM, 802.11b/g/n w/ wifi hotspot, 5mp camera, and 720p video recording ability certainly add some weight. Tying it all together is Android 2.1 with Samsung’s love it or hate it TouchWiz 3.0 skin.

Other tidbits like price and release date have been grouped under the all too common “Soon”, so keep checkin’ back. But if you’re feeling the urge to stay up to the minute with the Epic 4G, sign up to receive more information as it becomes available. You know how it is, join the crowd.

Any Sprint users waiting with abated breath?

AT&T to finally get a decent Android device in Samsung Captivate? (But how badly will they neuter it?)

  • June 17, 2010 1:32 pm

AT&T users, your life is close to being ridden of sub-standard Android handsets, for a newcomer is sizing up the competition, taking names, and preparing to lay a beat down. Introducing the Samsung Captivate.

Basically a Galaxy S re-named, the Samsung Captivate is a slick looking unit along with some pretty compelling hardware: 4-ish inch AMOLED, 5-megapixel camera, 1GHz processor, and 16GB of internal memory.

Don’t expect this hot piece of action to drop anywhere near the iPhone 4 release as AT&T obviously doesn’t want anything stealing its thunder. My bet would be on a July/August release for right around $199. The only thing left to question now is just how badly will AT&T neuter the Captivate as it has down with it’s two past Android devices — the Backflip and now the HTC Aria.

What do you guys think?

Apple snubs AMOLED displays on 4th gen iPhone due to Samsung display shortages, cost.

  • May 26, 2010 9:08 pm

We’ve already kind of seen the new 4th gen iPhone’s gorgeous display in pictures. Though nothing was actually on the screen to really “see”. Nevertheless, we all know that it will be a higher resolution beaut. But it could have been better…

HTC Incredible slower than similarly spec’d, overclocked Moto DROID. [Video]

  • April 28, 2010 10:03 pm

The HTC Inedible is as much a beast sitting in the hand as it is on paper. With a screaming fast Snapdragon processor, Sense UI, and a gorgeous AMOLED display, many are left saying “Nexus what?” But it may not be all roses and furry bunnies. A couple of videos have surfaced, compliments of a new Incredible owner showing that a Motorola DROID overclocked to 1GHz (running Pete’s Bugless Beast v1 ROM) actually beats the DROID Incredible also clocked at 1GHz. Say it isn’t so! Why yes, it appears to be…
