Mystery MetroPCS Android device shows its face.

  • June 6, 2010 8:22 pm

MetroPCS may miss out on…pretty much all the cool stuff (as does any smaller regional carrier), but that doesn’t mean they can’t get in on this Android revolution either. If you haven’t noticed, there’s an Android for everyone these days it seems.

So the device in question — the unnamed gadget before your eyes right about. Some basic specs include a 600MHz proc (same as Moto Droid’s) and what appears to be a display in the low 3.x-inch spectrum. Also, considering the fact this baby is shipping with Moto Blur, Moto isn’t shooting themselves in the foot and wasting all of our time (read: it’s coming with Android 2.1). Granted, I’m rockin’ Froyo (2.2) on my Droid right now. But 2.1 is a helluva lot better than 1.5 or 1.6. Hopefully those days are numbered…

Other tidbits such as RAM, ROM, name, release, and price are all up to you to speculate on at this point. Though what we can say is the processor has some potential. Being that it’s shared with the Droid, we can assume that this mystery device will overclock just as well, meaning easy 1.2GHz kernels wringing every last ounce of performance from this beaut (Is it really?).

So there ya have it MetroPCS fans. It’s not an Incredible or EVO 4G, but it’s somethin’. And somethin’ is so much better than nothin’. So take what you can get and hope for the best.

Dell misses the sweet spot with Streak pricing.

  • June 2, 2010 7:31 pm

The Dell Streak was shaping up to be quite the tablet/Android device. With features such as 5-inch display, WiFi/GPS/HSDPA, 5-megapixel camera and Android 2.1, what’s not to love? The price. The official word from Dell is that $500 is the entry cost for the Streak. At that price, no one is ever going to buy it.

Don’t get me wrong, the Streak is a hot product for sure. But $500 hot? Yeah, not so much. $299 would have been the sweet spot and absolutely wiped the floor in the lower-priced tablet market. But Dell got overly greedy I presume. Now the Android tablet I was looking at acquiring I’m merely…looking at.

Anyone else put off by the inflated pricetag?

Twitter for Android released! Bad: Requires Android 2.1 or above. [Update]

  • April 30, 2010 5:46 pm

We knew it was coming — Twitter for Android. Well, “official” Twitter that is. From the initial looks of it and after 15 minutes of playing around with it, I give it a 3.7 out of 5 (absolutely no scientific reasoning behind that…). I mean, it seems a little plain to me. Not that I want a cluttered, heavy, slow app of course. It just seems like it’s missing something.

The features are as one would expect from your typical Android Twitter app these days: Replies, retweets, address book/camera integration, location aware, etc. etc. Will it replace Seesmic in my day to day Twitter usage? Ehhh, that’s a bit of a stretch. I’ll have to give it a little more play time before I make that decision.

The only truly terrible thing I can think of is the fact that it requires Android 2.1 or above. Ya, that sucks for pretty much…1/2 of the Android population. Sorry guys, look but don’t touch…

Nexus One opens up for a few more shots. Full frontal spread entices…

  • December 14, 2009 10:14 pm

nexus-one-frontRegardless if you feel the Nexus One is the almighty “Google Phone” that lives on both sides of the “it does/doesn’t exist fence”, one thing is for sure — it’s hot. The Snapdragon processor and WVGA 3.7″ OLED display are drool worthy, equalling up to the most hotly anticipated Android device yet. (Droid it was nice being on top while it lasted). The carrier free w/ T-Mo buddy app is a nice touch, and rumors of a Google provided subsidy round out some of the more notable and interesting facts known so far.

Word on the streets say the Nexus One will have a CDMA variant — so far such a device has been going by “Dragon” or “Passion”. The Nexus One is rumored to drop in early January roughly the same time as Verizon’s next top-o-the-line Android device. The writing is pretty clearly written on the wall. The Nexus One isn’t only going to T-Mobile…

Who’s picking one up and/or switching to do so? We just gotta know…

Nexus One passes FCC with Tri-band US 3G support!

The claims of a “Google Phone” are gaining momentum this morning. Just to throw it out there, now I’m finally starting to wish I would have waited a *tad* longer before picking up the Droid. I love it and all, but the Nexus One is hott (two T’s hott!!) even without a physical qwerty. Personal lust behind us, the Nexus One has inched step closer to our hearts and hands this morning as pictures of it sailing through the FCC have gone public. Any additional info or shots of Android 2.1 won’t be found here as this current photoshoot is full of mainly business only attire — serial number and other unexciting stuff. Though one important and crucial feature revealed by the cold and sterile FCC garb is the mentioning of tri-band US 3G: 850/1700/1900 MHz! That’s right, this beast will run on either AT&T or T-Mobile 3G out of the box depending on the SIM card you mash inside. That is awesome! I’m sure AT&T users are dying to get their hands on any Android device much less the most hotly debated and discussed Android device. Why other smartphones and manufacturers haven’t made this move so far is beyond me. All I can say it’s about time! Perhaps this follows the idea of a “non-exclusive” (read: carrier free) phone?

But there’s more to share this fine, dark Monday morning. A nifty find from Engadget in the Nexus One product manual points to a “help” page at Google: google.com/phone/support.

Finally, a third cherry atop the pie of smartphone hysteria comes by way the fact that the Nexus One, built by HTC and documented as such via the FCC filing, lacks any and all HTC branding whatsoever.

The significance you ask? If Google is releasing their “own” branded phone, the manufacturers name has to go. You know how it is. Represent and all. At first I was as most, a bit skeptical of Google releasing their own phone. But now that the picture is flying past clear and going towards HD, it’s becoming much easier for me to envision a Google Phone. Now I want one really, really bad. Who’s ready to donate an organ for the cause?

DROID and HTC Droid Eris to receive Android 2.1 update January 11th or January 22nd?

  • December 7, 2009 9:46 am

androidGet your salt shakers folks. You’ll need them yet again as this is for now a “what if” type of question. It’s highly suspected that the Android 2.0.1 update will drop on December 11th just a few days from now. Verizon themselves mentioned that the Droid would receive such an update “before the holidays”. Now, also put into your internal RAM that Verizon has stated that the HTC Droid Eris will receive an upgrade to at least Android 2.0 in Q1 of 2010. Finally, back on November 9th we had a story detailing some leaked internal documents highlighting current Android 2.0 problems and plans to issue two updates — one on December 11th and one on January 22nd.

So now that we’re a several weeks into the futureand have had some more information creep out since November 9th, do you feel that the impending Android 2.0.1 update does highlight some truth in a January 11th/22nd release date for Android 2.1 as indicated on those leaked internal documents? I mean, various official confirmations from Verizon, Motorola, and HTC have been made promising of updates around these dates. So now I guess the only two things to ask are do you think this dual update plan will play out and which date do you see being the birth date of Android 2.1 — the 11th or 22nd — if any? I’d be more willing to side with the document. Then again, that was a good month ago…

So you’ve been lusting over Sense UI playing nice with the upcoming Android 2.1 update these last couple of days. Pictures are indeed worth a thousand words yet somehow, we are left wanting more. Understandable. And so you shall receive. HTC Hero owners who are starting to twitch due to the now ancient Android 1.5 build they’re currently running can — if they have the hacking chops — download a freshly leaked Android 2.1 ROM, complete with Sense UI wrapped all around. I could go on but you just want your hands on that ROM…and now! Am I right? Go ahead:

New Android Marketplace ToS all but confirm December 11th update?

  • November 11, 2009 7:56 am

tos-updateNormally a ToS update wouldn’t immediately lead us to start speculating on an OS update. But with the recent update rumors flying around with “December 11th” mentioned and this new ToS update with a deadline scheduled for that very same day, well…it sure does make me wonder. A fresh Android 2.0 update will be seen by some as making up for failures from the beginning. I see it as extremely quick turn around on bugs. More or less the same outlook but mine is a touch more positive. The updated ToS is rather lengthy but if you’re up to the task or your boss hasn’t arrived yet to snoop over your shoulder yet, step on in and give it a look.

Moto Droid and Eris getting first OTA update December 11th. Follow up fix on January 22nd?

  • November 9, 2009 5:31 pm

droid-fix-1Have a few reservations about Droid that are keeping you from embracing the awesomeness that is Droid and Android 2.0? Never fear because Verizon and Motorola with a pinch of Google are on top of it in a big, big way. Not even a week old yet and already a 7-page document has leaked with current issues that are in route to drop in an upcoming update. Just how soon? December 11th soon. Ya, that’s quick turn around if I ever saw it. Don’t forget to continue voicing any problems or concerns on Verizon’s Moto Droid forum threads as well as other various Android forums. It appears they’re paying attention.

The remaining 6 pages are inside (repeat of the first as well) so go ahead and and give it a look.
