The recurring discussion behind a “Windows 8 App Store” were re-ignited this morning as claimed screenshots of said storefront were once again leaked. The overall presentation looks rather nice, if a bit plain. Of course, we won’t know for sure until the beta of said store (Microsoft “App Mall”) is released sometime this year if rumors are to be believed.
With apps the #1 ticket to success it seems, software and hardware companies alike are racing to capitalize on the current “fad”. At least in Microsoft’s case, they’re trying to build everything — Xbox, Windows Phone 7, and Windows OS — underneath one code umbrella and app store.
While the screenshot above cannot be confirmed as real or fake at this point, it paints an interesting picture for Windows 8 (rumored for release in late 2012) and possibly even Windows 7 as the App Mall could be released ahead of the next version of Windows.
Barcelona, Spain based Ivanovich Games has a special deal this Wednesday, March 23rd. Any and all games in their catalog (games such as Operation Wow, Type Type Train, and Time Geeks) can be had for the low price of $0.99 with every cent of sales going towards relief efforts in Japan after the horrendous earthquake and tsunami almost two weeks ago. If you have a spare buck or two, now might be a good time to offer up some help. Proceeds will be donated to Japan via the Red Cross.

Love Twitter for iOS but hate the new “Trends” bar that sits at the top of your timeline? You’re not alone. In fact, it’s annoying enough for some people to take matters into their own hands in creating an app solely to remove it. Said app goes by the name “Twizzler” and can be found in the Cydia app store under the BigBoss repo free of charge.
Dislike the trends bar enough to jailbreak just for Twizzler?
With over 300,000 apps and no decent way to filter through search results means a long, painful process if you’re looking for anything particular. Well, it was a painful process. Apple has quietly updated the App Store to include new search filters/categories that will make all of our lives easier, and reduce the amount of time wasted needlessly scrolling. Search categories include:

Today, popular GPS maker Garmin, unveiled their first iPhone app. Dubbed “StreetPilot”, the new app more or less looks exactly like the stand alone GPS units in regards to functionality — and that’s a good thing. The app includes some of the most important features of the stand alone units such as lane assist, speed limit indicators, and free traffic alerts. The cloud-based (internet connection required) app retails for $39.99 in the App Store.
If stand alone GPS devices are more up your alley, Garmin’s new 2400-series will be more to your liking. Available in four separate models, the new nuvi 2400 devices all feature a 5-inch display as well as the company’s traffic-learning “nüRoute” which incorporates trafficTrends and myTrends in order to better predict travel times the more you travel a particular route. The new 2400 series will start at $249 and reach up to a still manageable $349.
The StreetPilot iPhone app is available today in the App Store while the Nuvi 2400 series GPS devices will be showcased this week at CES.

iPad users have been without a legitimate Facebook application since the tablet’s launch with no hope in site. There have been many attempts at bringing the popular social network to the platform too. But this latest attempt by FacePad is perhaps the best yet.
What you’ll see upon firing up the app is a beautifully laid out and well thought out design that pulls on the iPad’s strengths while still remaining highly functional. So it may surprise you to learn that FacePad is no more than a re-skinned touch.facebook.com at its core. If that turns your off, hold off on your judgement for FacePad developer Loytr has a more sophisticated and “native app-like” v2 in the works.
**A note of caution for 3.x iPad users: FacePad currently has a bug that crashes when on firmware below 4.x. An update is already awaiting approval by Apple.
FacePad for iPad can be found in the Apple App Store for free.
