New “Apple City” Being Designed by British Architect Norman Foster.
Right around a week ago, we heard of news that Apple bought HP’s old headquarters for a cool $300 million. As it stands now, the old HP headquarters is very stereotypical business — no frills, bland design, and quite frankly, very un-Apple like. That’s why Apple is enlisting in the design chops of famed English architect Norman Foster, in helping design the new Apple headquarters that will stretch into the new facade.
But more exciting than simply having a world renowned architect at the helm of the design team is the way in which Apple is designing the new building. According to El Economista, Apple will be making use of a fairly complex tunnel system to connect the current facility to the new one (referred to as “Apple City), allowing the actual land mass above ground to be covered in plants, grass, trees and other nature-friendly materials. Further adding to the green nature of the new design is the fact that the tunnel system will actually reduce the need for cars to get to and from each building.
The collaboration between Foster and Apple once finished will house Apple’s engineering and R&D teams. Pretty fitting considering the ultra-modern/futuristic path the new design is hoping to accomplish.
