Review: NZXT Avatar S

  • August 9, 2011 8:46 am

While Apple is pursuing the world of touch/gesture interaction ultimately looking to abolish the aging peripheral, there’s still plenty to love about the little digital rodent. For starters, photo editing/CAD in particular can definitely benefit from the pin point precision a standard mouse offers — something much more blunt objects like fingers can’t yet do. Gaming is but another area, that in our opinion, won’t go mouse-less for quite some time.

With all that said, actually finding a mouse that is perfect for you is quite the chore these days. There are literally dozens upon dozens to choose from. Which one should you choose? How about the NZXT Avatar S? Hop inside as we take a look at NZXT’s new gaming mouse and determine if this mouse sinks or swims…

Koreans get the best of everything: Avatar in 4D

  • February 8, 2010 10:38 am

A few years ago, seeing a movie marketed with the characters “3D” screamed “gimmick”. After Avatar however, the movie studios are scrambling to match Avatars success, especially with that impressive $2 billion+ box office. I’m positive that as studios try to cash in on the 3D mania, we consumers are merely along for the ride and subject to countless craptastic movies with 3D slapped on to earn an extra buck. Such is the world in which we live.

Korea however has one upped us and the countries most famous movie in recent memory by adding another number: Avatar 4D. What exactly would constitute a 4D movie? Besides surround sound and 3D visual effects, Avatar 4D features added effects such as moving seats, laser lights and/or wind, and a host of other more “physical” features to immerse viewers into the film even more. For Avatar, CJ-CGV (the company that owns and runs the several 4D Plexes showing Avatar 4D in Korea) uses a total of 30 different “real-life” effects in order to rationalize the upgrade to 4D.

Avatar 4D isn’t the companies first venture into 4D. Beginning last year, CJ-CGV kicked things off with “Journey to the Center of the Earth” in a single 88-seat theater. With Avatar’s success, the company was able to expand. Over the last year, a total of 10 4D films have been released for public consumption in Korea across several more theaters.

It’s a pretty neat concept and one that I wouldn’t mind dropping a few extra bills for to experience at least once. Speaking of money, a standard ticket for Avatar 3D will set you back roughly $15.80 USD. Ya, I’ll have to set aside a few extra bills for the experience. But hey, you only live once. If it’s put together well and performs as well as the company claims, I think it would be worth the added cash.

I’m a simple human. I like to be entertained. Is $15.80 too much for a movie ticket regardless of price? I just wish I even had the choice of seeing a 4D movie close to home. Don’t you? Leave your thoughts below.

New Faceless Facebook Images: Be cool. Be anonymous. Be unique.

  • January 19, 2010 11:56 am

If you spend any amount of time online, whether it be in forums or social networking sites, you’ve at some point or another seen a gray avatar box. The little box would house a clever little picture or icon if the person on the other end took the time to create one. Many people still cherish their anonymity or simply don’t have enough time or want to create such a picture.

If you follow the former — not wanting to give up your faceless persona — why not give yourself a more unique, mysterious image. Instead of the default faceless head that we all see too often, these “Faceless Facebook” images while marketed for Facebook, can be applied anywhere a gravatar is warranted.

Go ahead and give the pics below a quick look. They’re clever, cool, and anonymous.

Like Avatar? Learn the language.

  • January 13, 2010 2:36 pm

Linguistics and language aren’t normally something you’d hear about on a tech blog. But this isn’t a normal tech blog. And learning something such as the Na’vi language featured in Avatar isn’t your normal language. Avatar if you didn’t know, has been a pretty big topic in the tech world for the last several weeks due to it’s groundbreaking 3D and filming technologies used during filming.

With that, the language featured in Avatar while not spoken by any group of people in the world is an actual language created by Paul Frommer, a widely known linguist. I don’t care how geeky you claim to be, no one — and I mean no one — will be able to stand up to those in the field of geekery to someone who takes the challenge of becoming fluent in Na’vi. Heck, even if you’re not a geek and instead claim to be a die hard Avatar fan, this Na’vi Language pocket guide is for you.

Of course, learning a language that but a handful of geeks know is pretty meaningless. Then again, you could classify yourself as a rare breed of humans and have “Na’vi parties” in which you and your fellow Na’vi speakers can come and converse in harmony.

The list of 1,000+ Na’vi words can be found in a handy pocket guide. The list of vocabulary mind you, is growing daily, so have at it.

New “Poser” theme from Elecite brings new approach to customizing your theme

  • December 18, 2009 2:04 pm

poser-4The days of being able to simply change your wallpaper and calling that the end of your customizing rope are over. A new BlackBerry theme by Elecite takes a rather unique and exciting departure from the typical world of BlackBerry themes. Instead of merely having the ability to change your background and maybe move the icons a bit, Poser gives you a new, untold amount of options.

The whole concept of the theme revolves around customizing an avatar and yes, wallpaper too. The number of avatars available is pretty high with Stewie from Family Guy and a stealthy Ninja being two of my personal favorite. But the customization doesn’t stop there. With each avatar you choose you can further drill down in the options and change features such as the head, outfit, weapon, accessories — even giving the poor creation a pet.

All of this seems like it would cause the greedy theme dev to jack up the price. Thankfully that’s not the case. $3.49 and your’re out the door rockin’ your new theme.

**Super cool side note: If you think your poser/avatar is the coolest of the cool, take a screenshot and send it to [email protected] for a chance to win a top spot in the 10 best posers. The 10 best winners will receive a refund from purchasing the Poser theme as well as another theme of your choice free. What are you waiting for?!

  • Purchase Poser for BlackBerry devices running OS 5.0 or higher from Elecite for 3.49

Avatar: “Groundbreaking”. “Oscar Bound”.

Avatar: graphically speaking, is it the Star Wars of the decade? I mean, for the last year we’ve seen increasing amounts of press and media coverage highlighting the lengths at which director, writer, and overall creator James Cameron went to make Avatar one of the most anticipated movies of all time. Movie buffs and HD aficionados have no doubt been following the development of Avatar as revolutionary new methods were used to create the special effects within the movie which overall, raise the bar multiple levels for CG in the future. So how is it? According to early reviews, the wait has been well worth it. Words such as “Groundbreaking” and “Oscar Bound” highlight what is to be quite a thrilling and visually gorgeous movie.

It isn’t all visuals however, a distant planet love story that takes place in 2154 on a planet called “Pandora” is said to be rather entrenching as well. In my opinion, even if the plot wasn’t all that great, the fact that the James Cameron (Titanic) had to create the special effects for this movie from scratch means it is truly a labor of love. Now after many years of a script going without any motion and special effects work out the ying-yang, Cameron can finally sit back and bask in the spotlight. I’ve already ordered my tickets for the December 18th release. Using “excited” to describe my excitement would be an understatement.

While ultimately not a gadget, it’s technology, sci-fi, and overall geekiness combined with some HD flare are more than enough to suck me in. Anyone else uber excited, waiting with abated breath, and counting down the days until the 18th? Could this be the current generation’s Star Wars — a sci-fi movie with current, bleeding edge special effects all wrapped in a geek loving cocoon of awesomeness?
