Tumblr Redesigns Login Page. Now Even More Simple. #tumblr

  • December 23, 2010 10:46 pm

Tumblr was already known as a stylish, design-centric micro-blogging service. Over the last few weeks, they’ve also come to be known as rather poor in terms of reliability with the most noteworthy incident last over 24 hours! And now, the simplistic micro-blogging service gets even more simple with the new login page. Looks good to us.

[Update] Here We Go Again: Tumblr Down. #tumblrdown #tumblr

  • December 17, 2010 7:37 am

Any attempts to use Tumblr this morning will be met with another red light as pictured above. There isn’t any update yet as to why the popular blogging service is down yet again. We’d suspect growing pains are to blame, though.

For Tumblr users, this downtime is beginning to leave a bitter taste in their mouths. Not more than a week ago, Tumblr went through a lengthy 24+ hour downtime due to a failed database cluster. Hopefully this latest issue is resolved in a much more timely manner.

Update

Looks like Tumblr is back up (for me at least). Hopefully that’s all for the week…

Printing all of Twitter on paper would consist of 104,860,000,000 words spread across 350,000,000 pages. Woah!

  • January 19, 2010 10:57 pm

Every once in a while it’s nice to take a breather, sit back, relax and take in the more nerdy, completely useless though interesting facts of life. You’ve probably seen various articles, pictures, and posters comparing various amounts of incredibleness. For tonights super high number of awesomeness, we’re going to look at Twitter.

Seeing as how millions of people around the world use Twitter, it’s incredibly easy to assume that the numbers associated with Twitter — any numbers — are going to be pretty damn high. And astronomic they are.
If Twitter were printed in it’s entirety on paper…

  • Using an average HP Inkjet printer, it would cost you $24,500,000 to print in black ink or $55,606,250 to include the Twitter blue.
  • The total weight of the paper would weigh in at three and a half million pounds — the equivalent of 82 school buses fully loaded.
  • Seven billion tweets to date consist of 104,860,000,000 words. That translates to roughly 133,000 copies of the the King James version of the Bible

…..and so on. Give the pics below a read. It’s pretty intriguing for this late at night. Sorry.

WordPress BlackBerry app updated. Features abound.

  • October 8, 2009 8:51 am

Mobile bloggers and CrackBerry aficionados take note, the WordPress BlackBerry app has been updated to version 0.9.0.175 *correction* 0.9.0.157. Besides a new set of numbers, users can now enjoy:

  • Custom field support
  • Ability to write and post excerpts
  • Support for comment replies
  • Gravatar support
  • Open comment list for a specific post
  • Open URL of author in BB browser
  • Added support for French and Italian languages

Overall a welcome update for sure. I know the ability to reply to comments on the go is a big plus in my book. If you’re currently rockin’ an older version of WordPress for BlackBerry, you should be prompted to upgrade. If the upgrade prompt is eluding you or you simply haven’t taken the plunge yet, you can pick up the new beta version at http://blackberry.wordpress.org/install. Enjoy!

Off the record Obama tweet calling Kanye West a “jackass” gets yanked.

kanye-jackass-tweet

In an off the record interview with CNBC, an ABC reporter, Terry Moran tweeted:”Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a “jackass” for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT’S presidential.” The tweet was quickly deleted. However, Twitter caches all tweets and doesn’t delete deleted tweets from said cache immediately. Now, many will look at the issue on the surface — that is, that a tweet supposedly quoting the President of the United States was yanked probably due to decency concerns or whatnot. However, it goes much deeper. The interview that this tweet was supposedly stemming from was an “off the record…behind closed doors” type of ordeal. The tweet made public a very private event. This isn’t the first time tweeting individuals have found themselves in hot water or situations because of potentially sensitive information becoming public. Of course, Kanye West is a jackass and completely talentless, though that’s besides the point. The real point is the fact that whether by force from ABC, CNBC, or some government branch, the tweet was taken down.

Why? Was any harm done? A talentless “musician” was called out for a complete lack of judgement a night earlier. Hardly an affront to national security if you ask me. Still, another instance of apparent censoring shows its face. From NFL players and referees to various other areas of professional careers, Twitter is quickly becoming a problem. And now, Presidential reporters could be the latest to come under fire for using the popular micro-blogging service. ABC has since apologized though it puzzles me as to why or what. Ok, an apology for tweeting a quote taken from an off the record, behind closed doors interview is grounds for an apology and against many rules set in place. But for any other reason I fail to see the need. In fact, having a person as important as the President of the United States calling you a “jackass” certainly carries some weight.

The crackdown on tweeting and spreading “inside” information is setting a very unsettling view of what the future holds. Again, while more serious consequences can come forth from such tweets, something as trivial as Obama calling a “musician” a jackass is hardly significant. Is censorship gaining a silent traction or is it just another instance of an extreme case getting blown out of proportion?

“This internet is different”. This is how it’s going to be!

Bloggers as of late have been getting a fair deal of flack from more “reputable” news sources with fat checkbooks and more legal resources than most of us would know what to do with. Time and time again we have seen bigger news publications attack smaller blogs for piracy, siphoning content, and all out theft on the digital front. Though, this borrowing and sharing of ideas (*clears throat*…the whole purpose of the internet) and the so called “rules” that apply, only go one way. Whenever big publications are threatened, legal hounds are released. But when bloggers and smaller blogs across the internet are pillaged, well, that’s a different story. This double standard and utter nonsense has infuriated many. Myself included. Thankfully, the little guys aren’t taking it lightly.

15 of Germany’s most popular blogs and bloggers came together to create the “Internet Manifesto”. It is a document informing telling everyone, big publications included, how the internet works no matter the attempts to force it into nice little pay containers and walled gardens. The Internet Manifesto has garnered a great deal of attraction already as the site it is hosted on has been up and down due to traffic. The Manifesto highlights how this growing feeling of entitlement is a disease and that the internet is a new business model — applying old business models and failing to innovate to the changing markets and times will only cast those involved further into irrelevance.

The Internet Manifesto in it’s entirety just inside for those of you wanting some enlightenment, knowledge, and more importantly, a good read.

While many of you out there either don’t have a WordPress blog or care in the world to even start one, there may be several of you fine individuals out there who are looking to dip their toes into this whole blogging thing.  Besides the obvious and more often talked about domain names, server hosts, etc., the biggest question you need to ask yourself is: “What are you going to blog about?”  Picking a too general or too specific topic/genre will hamper your ability to grow and attract readers.  We’ll assume you’ve already made it through the whole “finding yourself” stage as well as server set up and the other beginning set up junk.  For this post we’ll focus on how to actually write an article.  Unleash the writer within…

WordPress App coming to Blackberry!

  • June 3, 2009 11:19 am

WordPress users who have been dying for any form of mobile wordpress will be extremely excited to know that there is one coming. At Blackberry Word Camp in San Francisco, Matt Mullenweg let slip that the words:

New Blackberry app soon

Now I don’t know about you, but I translate that literally word for word as: “We’re working on one…It’s coming soon”. Wouldn’t you? I have the WordPress App for my iPhone and like it for the most part. However, it needs some big improvements concerning actual post creation. Blackberry/Wordpress users, are you excited?!
