Well this is sad — The Bolt BlackBerry browser, originally launched in 2009, is officially dead. A message posted to Bolt’s website simply reads:
“Dear BOLT User,
The free BOLT mobile browsing service will be discontinued. Unfortunately, the economic circumstances prevent us from running a free service going forward. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your loyalty and support.
The BOLT Team”
The specific mention of “free service” seems to suggest that the Bolt team could be working on a new offering that would require some type of payment whether it be a one-time charge or recurring monthly payment. Though, at this time any such speculation is purely rumor.
While the BlackBerry browser has come pretty far since the earlier 4.x days, it’s still a pretty pathetic option, meaning 3rd party options such as Opera and (up until today) Bolt made web browsing on RIM’s smartphone platform bearable.
Now that one of the better 3rd party browsers for BlackBerry is dead, what will you turn to, dear BlackBerry reader?
Bakrie Telecom customers have some exciting news tonight — the Indonesian carrier has partnered with Bitstream, the makers of the fabulous Bolt mobile browser, to announce a partnership moving forward. “For the first time, Internet access can be done not only through smartphones but can also be enjoyed by phones in the mid-low end category”, says Erik Meijer, PT Bakrie Telecom deputy president director. Bitstream’s Bolt browser will be the go-to standard for Bakrie’s Esia line of services, which include EV-Do supporting phones such as the Nokia 6316 and Samsung Corby.
The use of Bolt is a notable one, as it is one of the best mobile browsers around. With features such as HTML 5 support, Flash, , light footprint, and pure blinding speed, Indonesian users can be sure they’re getting a top end product.
Those looking to stay up to date with the latest Bitstream has to offer can check out booth #2D23 at MWC February 14th-17th as well as checking out their website. For more information on Bakrie’s Esia products and services, point your browser here instead.
BlackBerry users will want to take a minute or two out of their hectic schedule today in order to fulfill one app update that’s worth grabbing. The popular Bolt Browser has been updated to 2.1.
With it comes enhanced Facebook integration as well as an updated webkit engine. The latter of which is always considered a good thing as such updates usually beget speed. And we all know how much rendering speed means in the mobile sphere.
But speed isn’t everything. Namely, tabbed browsing, better page rendering, and HTML5 are now part of the game. What are you waiting for?
DL link is right inside.
Mark your calendars BlackBerry users and mobile internet aficionados, February 15th is the day in which the Bolt browser gets a big upgrade to version 1.7. The biggest boasting point of the new version is widget support. Using said feature will be easily accessible via a separate widget menu within the browser as to make using the widgets easy and intuitive.
In addition to the new widget support, Bolt also supports popular web technologies (not Flash) such as Ajax and Javascript. One other honorable mention is that the new widget features are written in standard W3C code to make development and compatibility easy on developers and consumers alike. Overall, it’s worth upgrading.
Any BlackBerry/Bolt users care to chime in on the new widget support?

If you actually use the internet on a BlackBerry for anything worthwhile, you already know how terrible and downright useless the standard browser is. Thankfully there are options. Today’s focus will be Bolt. A new browser relative to other players’ time on the market such as Opera mini doesn’t mean that Bolt is eons behind. Far from it actually. Even the first 1.0 build was awesome. With 1.5 that awesomeness only gets better. The list of updates is rather impressive and just goes to show how dedicated the Bolt team really is.
The New Features:
- Cache Support to speed users’ ability to move quickly back and forth between the currently and previously viewed Web pages through the use of backward and forward navigation.
- Download Manager for easy download of files directly from BOLT and the ability to save them to specific folders on the mobile phone (requires JSR75 support on the device).
- Support for Streaming Videos of Any Length that overcomes limitations on some phones’ ability to stream videos of longer lengths. The new approach ensures video clips will play on all devices, for any length video.
- Video Wizard to assist users in configuring their device for optimal video playback.
- Dedicated Search Bar on home page, for easier and faster online searches.
- Improved Ability to Manage RSS Feeds by allowing users to arrange and file feeds just as they do with their favorites and bookmarks.
- Enhancements for Touch Screen Devices such as simple volume controls for the BOLT media player which now offers volume controls on the screen.
- Enhancements for BOLT Servers in the cloud, which increase the already fast BOLT mobile browser by an additional 10 to 20 percent.
I’m sure you’re tired of reading by now and just want to try it out for yourself. As you wish…

The “mobile browser war” seems to in for a year of fierce competition. With Mobile Safari so far dominating mobile web use, the other mobile OS developers aren’t sitting down. Opera Mobile, Opera mini, Mozilla’s Mobile Firefox (Fennec), and Bitstream’s BOLT browser are all competing for you love and attention. In a press release to more or less gloat (hey with numbers like those above I would too) about their success in the last month. What kind of success? How about over 300,00 users who collectively visited over 15 million pages! That is a huge amount of traffic in just one month! So mobile web users have you used BOLT yet? Likes/Dislikes? Let us know! If you haven’t downloaded the Bolt browser yet you can get a copy right here. Hopefully BOLT keeps up the momentum as it is a very promising browser.

Crackberry users all know how unreliable the stock Blackberry browser is. It’s terribly slow and renders horribly. Until now Bolt was announced, the only other good solution was Opera Mini. A fantastic browser to say the least. Bolt is aiming to claim the “best” title. The new public beta chimes in at .86 and comes with a whole host of features. Gone are the early days of Bolt with miniscule test pools of company insiders and crashing servers. Bolt has come quite a long way since then. Hop on through to for the full rundown.

Coming from a Blackberry, I can attest to the fact that the stock Blackberry browser is a joke, plain and simple. If you plan on doing any amount of web browsing, up until now you had Opera Mini as you only good choice. However, a new player is coming to the market. BitStream is working on a new Blackberry browser called the “Bolt”. BitStream claims that Bolt is a great deal faster than Opera Mini (and OM is pretty darn fast), as well as using a considerable less amount of resources. So far, after a few minutes of playing around with it I must admit that I am really liking Bolt so far. It will be exciting to see it further developed!
