The ongoing floods in Thailand are some of the country’s worst ever, so much so that it is now trickling into the world of consumer electronics. As many of you know, there are a boatload of manufacturing facilities throughout Thailand and other parts of Asia. Back in March when Japan had the devastating earthquake and tsunami, several consumer electronics manufacturers had issues then, too. But today it is Canon who is in the news.
The flooding is apparently bad enough in parts of Thailand that production of Canon printers (specifically the newly released Pixma Pro-1) and various cameras will be affected. Canon is quick to note that while the company doesn’t actually manufacturer any cameras in Thailand, parts supplies are sprinkles around the country.
If a Canon printer/camera is on the high end of your priority list, now would be a good time to snatch one (or ten) up.

Nerds such as myself take pride in showing off our geeky sides wherever it may be. My desk at work is but another canvas to paint the nerdy image of my life day in and day out. We’ve all seen various USB gadgets, nerdy clocks, and shape shifting gizmos, but what we haven’t seen is a desktop canon.
This tiny canon isn’t your standard geek toy, firing nerf darts or anything “harmless”. Instead, light up the fuse and prepare yourselves for quite a punch — an actual metal canon ball shrunken down to size though still plenty powerful to do some damage.
In the video (inside), you can see that again, while small, the canon balls launched by this miniature Goliath are strong and fast moving enough to puncture a pop can!
Cubicle security just got a massive kick in the pants…

Ever find yourself looking at the $500 lens on your $5800 camera, wishing you could poor liquid goodness deep down inside and carry it around as a “custom” mug, showing off the true nerd lifestyle you long to live? Ya, not so much, do ya? But what if someone went through the trouble of making a mug that looked like some expensive photography equipment? Might be a little more welcoming huh? Apparently photographers shooting it up at the Olympics in Vancouver were given some pretty sweet shwag — 70-200mm camera lens coffee mugs.
Similar trinkets have appeared here and there over the years, but no major company or manufacturer has ever really gotten behind such projects and actually marketed them. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure there would be a decent following willing to pick up a few lens mugs. What better way to simultaneously freak out a buddy/co-worker and look like the real geek you are? Canon/Nikon/Konica/everyone else…are you listening?

If you can recall a year or two ago, (I know, reach deep into the depths that is your mind….I’m just kidding you ‘ol bear trap you), SED technology was a TV technology with a bright future ahead looking to become the dominating standard, if not at least a worthy competitor to OLED, and the now defunct FED standards with it’s extremely nice image quality. Then drama, greed, and confusion took place as various partners dropped support and funding. The most recent casualty being FED as Sony has picked up their cards and moved on. Though currently, there hasn’t been much said in the way of SED tv’s or the technology. However, Canon itself appears to be giving the tech second look with two recent patent filings. Patent No. 20090111350 and No. 20090108727 are two recent patents filed on April 30th by the electronic giant, Canon, regarding SED technology. The first dealing with the downsizing of SED electric fields and the second detailing of how to increase picture quality. If the technology were dead, why would they be patenting things related to it? One can only assume that we can expect to see a resurgence in SED TV technology and hopefully even get SED TV’s into the hands of mere mortals in the not too distant future. The images that SED displayed to the world in the past were nothing short of jaw dropping and impeccable. Maybe if we all cross our fingers hard enough, we can finally see SED materialize into something that we can all enjoy.
