Intel may think they have a fighting chance in the smartphone world, but with ARM and their upcoming A9 chip, it’s more apparent than ever that Intel doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell.
How can I say that? Take a look at the A9′s preliminary specs:
- 2.0GHz with “voltage overdrive” (read: Intel Turbo Boost-esque tech) can push A9 to 2.5GHz, with possible maximum at 2.8GHz.
- Oh yeah, the biggie — It’s dual-core.
The A9 chips are built upon a 28-nm process, meaning they’re tiny. With that tiny size comes a pretty hefty power savings. Though admittingly, tossing in an extra core and playing around with voltages will nullify a fair chunk of the claimed battery saving abilities.
For now, there’s not even a slight hint of when we could see these in mass produced phones. But I’ll do my part and take a stab at it: 2 years. Your turn…
Oh hell. Another one of those not so gadgety posts infiltrating Gadgetsteria. Calm down. This one is pretty nifty. I’d imagine a fair amount of you out there like not only gadgets, but food. It’s kind of hard to not like eating…staying alive and all. But there are some pretty weird folks out there. Anywho, the TACA Cookie Mug has one unique design feature — a cutout that allows cookies to fit chips deep into the liquid of your choice. Designed by Entresuelo1a design studio, this genius in a cup is unfortunately not for sale at this time. But if it were real, I’d own a whole case.
A CPU is a bland looking piece of silicon and various metals. Not much to look at, right? Well, if you’re a geek’s geek, that statement couldn’t be any less true. Truth be told, computer hardware is hot. With that said, take a look at the upcoming Intel Sandy Bridge CPU with all of it’s beauty on display (more or less). Here you can see the result of a higher 2011 pin count over the outgoing king of the hill’s 1366 — a larger, square-ish shape. Specifically, one that will now require two CPU latches/restraints to keep it in place. Yes, it’s big.
The larger size is needed because Intel has gone ahead and implemented plenty of new features directly into the processor chip itself: Integrated graphics unit, PCI-Express controller, and quad-channel memory support. (Yup — Sandy Bridge adopters are going to need lots of new everything…again…)
Being the nerd that I am, fresh off of a recent computer build a couple months back, Sandy Bridge definitely has the potential to win me over. Now we’ll just have to sit back and cross our fingers in hopes that Intel prices these just right. If so, it’ll be time to build another computer.
Any other enthusiasts itching for some new hardware?
It seems that in todays world, everyone can have their own personalized flash drive. Whether it be in the shape of a stick, car, or decapitated teddy bear, flash drives literally come in every shape and size. And now, they come in the form of a poker chip. Gamblers make note, this is one chip you don’t want to throw away. Whataya say? $19 for 4GB worth? All you have to do is hit the link below…

Cheaper prices for an Intel hex-core processor you say? Yes! Well — a little bit cheaper. It’s nothing to write home about at $899. (The 980x retails at $999, though market forces have pushed that up to between $1049-1199.) Still, saving a Benjamin or two on one of the speediest platforms money can buy is something to smile about. Not to mention, a little overclocking will make this beaut just as fast as the more expensive 980x on the cheap. (Relatively…) If you were holding off on a 980x because the $1k+ pricetag just wasn’t your thing, now’s your time to shine. Hit up Newegg and plop down your cash now. Anyone feeling like a mid-summer hardware upgrade….?
Itchin’ to know what’s powering Nintendo’s latest and greatest portable? Wonder in a sea of mystery no more dear reader. Instead of the standard Nvidia Tegra fan fare, a DMP PICA200 with a 200MHz clock speed is used. With that, up to 15.3 million polygons per second, 800 million pixels, and full-screen anti-aliasing are on tap and any given point to wow you into 3D oblivion.
It’s certainly plenty powerful to produce some rather stunning visuals, though I wouldn’t wager quite as “pretty” as some other portables we’ve handled. Still, it’s a nice breath of fresh air for Nintendo’s mobile line wouldn’t you say?

I love geeky clothing. And I’m not just talking about some run of the mill t-shirt with some clever, digital play on words. Honest to goodness “Woah, that’s awesome” type of stuff. The Nike Circuit Shoes created by Gabriel Dishaw aren’t technically Nike’s at all. They’re just modeled to look like that.
The coolness factor that simply oozes out of the circuit laden footwear is too cool to ignore. A good end table piece for sure. Just don’t go navigating the world in these. Can you say blisters from hell…

Intel’s next-gen Sandy Bridge platform (1155) has received plenty of attention over the last few weeks as images of it have been strewn across the web thanks to Computex 2010. But today we finally have a little more info to go with those specs. Coolaler was able to get their mitts on an engineering sample to glean some much sought after benchmark-age off of it.
As hardware/PC builders have probably already gathered, the tested model — which ran at 2.5GHz and featured 256KB of L2 Cache per core and a shared 6MB L3 Cache — which has been discussed loosely before falls a step behind the 2.8GHz Core i7-860.
From what I’m seeing initially on the new 1155 socket, there’s not really much reason to upgrade if you’re content with your 1156 hardware, as don’t forget, none of your 1156 hardware will work with 1155 bits. How much is it worth to you?
Screens of the chip above being flogged and a backside shot of the proc itself are just inside. Dive in…
Tired of desperately searching for a powerful yet svelte laptop to carry with you on life’s journeys while still getting 5+ hours of battery life? Currently the two words “powerful” and “runtime” don’t go together. To have one you must sacrifice the other. But Intel has something up their sleeve…
