When looking for new and innovative ways to slaughter time, games often enter the foray. But such treats in life often come with some sort of paywall. There are tons of websites that do offer up free gaming. But could one ever strike a cord as personal as an Atari gaming site? If you’d like to test that theory for yourself, head on over to Atari’s new site which offers up some pretty sweet features, namely free browser based games of classic Atari originals. What originals exactly? I mean, Atari released a boat load of games back in the day. If you were one of the nerds who possed (and maybe still posses) an Atari 2600, you may recognize Adventure and Yar’s Revenge. If you were instead an arcade junkie, perhaps Battlezone, Crystal Castles, and Lunar Lander are more along your lines no? Either way, the games listed previously are now all available on Atari’s site (linked above) so that you can relive the classics. I’m sure that as time progresses, Atari will push out more games to keep people coming back. It’s certainly in their best interest don’t you think? Stop by, give it a go, and let us know what you think.

Commodore 64 returns to the App Store!

Classic gaming fans were no doubt saddened when Apple removed the Commodore 64 app because of some elusive code that allowed end users to enter into BASIC interpreter. Noticing their screw up, the App Store yanked the app. That was a couple months ago when the developers first received word that their app was going to be pulled. They promptly removed the offending code and resubmitted. So why did it take so long? Well, after the last coy little attempt to circumnavigate the App Store policies (I’m not hating, I’d do it too..) Apple was probably a tad bit more thorough this time around.

Dates and pondering aside, the new version isn’t just a dumbed down version of the old. Three new games: International Basketball, International Baseball, and International Tennis have found there was into the app. If sports aren’t your thing, there’s plenty of other games to be had as well — Dragons Den, Le Mans, Arctic Shipwreck, Jack Attack and Jupiter Lander. Games aren’t the only addition however as the devs also managed to squeeze even more performance out of the app to the tune of 30%! Those not into classic gaming may not see the point of loading up such basic digital things on a technologically advanced device such as the iPhone/Touch. But for the rest of us, the $4.99 asking price is more than reasonable.

GoldenEye 007 new release outlook: Don’t hold your breath.

Get your tissues ready and prepare to weep. If you’re old enough to remember GoldenEye 007, (not only the greatest James Bond game ever, but one of the best games ever) and were hoping that it may make it’s way to a new console such as the Xbox Live Arcade or Wii Virtual Console, you’re going to be thoroughly disappointed. According to Rare, the company responsible for the N64 first person shooter, made it very clear that there isn’t much hope for future renditions or even ports of the game to come to modern consoles. A rather close summary would go along the lines of: “a snowball’s chance in hell”.

Again, not very encouraging to say the least. I know that I myself as well as hoards of games would have shelled out another $20-$30 to get a modern version/port of that game on new hardware. Sadly it looks as if those leaked shots of a hi-def GoldenEye “10th Anniversary Edition” are nothing more than a visual tease, taunting us from behind closed doors. god life sucks…

Atari noise maker helps you relive the classic days of 8-bit goodness.

For some, the games of today while visually dazzling and at times deeply involved just don’t have the same pick-up-and-playability of the classics. Back in the 8-bit day, sitting down and starring at a dude on the screen comprised of a dozen blocks was high tech back then. Similarly, the sounds and “music” that accompanied these wonders of science were something else themselves. If those beeps, bops, bams, and slams were sweet sweet music to your ears, the Atari Noise Maker may be just the device to make your life complete once again. Carry it with you and annoy your friends. Show off at family events. The possibilities are endless. All you need is $45 and long enough to stop by Etsy in which that $45 magically disappears never to be seen again. However, in return you get some sweet old gaming music. Ya dig it?
