Motorola Cliq 2.1 Update Now Available.

  • November 9, 2010 9:21 am

The Motorola Cliq was one of Moto’s first “re-emerging” devices that helped drag them back from the edge of bankruptcy. Though even when it was released many months ago, the included Android 1.5 operating system was sorely outdated. Fast forward to late 2010 and that fact becomes even more apparent. Though hope is finally here. The Android 2.1 (Eclair) update (Sorry folks…no 2.2) is finally here.

There’s only one caveat though — the update isn’t live by way of OTA update yet. You have to head to Motorola’s website and download it manually. Once the .zip update is downloaded, copy it to the root of your SD card. Then, head to Settings > About Phone > System Updates.

Of the rather long list of features the 2.1 update brings, an updated Android Market, 7 homescreens, resizable widgets, new task manager, and new widgets are the most readily apparent. If you do manage to give the manual update a go, be sure to let us know how it goes!

Mystery Android slider receiving FCC flogging caught in pictures. (Wildfire?)

It almost seems like a new Android device is caught, spied, or released on a weekly, if not daily basis. Being an Android junkie myself, I certainly have no problem with this. Especially considering a new, Android slider is in the making…

Cliq XT adds in touch-sensitive side panels, sadly shipping with outdated Android 1.6

  • March 1, 2010 1:19 pm

How many times are we going to have to sit here and watch a “new” Android device released with a grossly outdated OS such as Android 1.6. Summer of 2009 — Android 1.6 = hotness. Spring 2010 — not so much. But for those who don’t know (or just don’t care), the Motorola Cliq XT will soon be dropping on T-Mobile’s network. Besides the disappointing reliance on Android 1.6, one particularly neat feature that is developing is that of touch-sensitive side panels on the phones case. These touch sensitive areas allow the user to select things without having to actually touch the screen or navigation pad. Pretty cool, no?

But are “touch-senstive side panels” enough to warrant Android 1.6, especially with Android 2.1 this close to release for a slew of US Android devices?

Moto CLIQ rooted!

  • December 23, 2009 6:30 am

Android lovers and Cliq users rejoice — the Motorola Cliq has officially been rooted. If you’re looking for custom goodies such as honest to goodness themes (instead of home replacements) and a few other hacked items you’re good to go. However, if you’re real intentions are to install some tweaked ROM’s (hello HTC Sense on your Moto Cliq) hold off for a bit longer. According to those responsible for the root — TheDudesAndroid of ModMyMoto — it isn’t yet ready to install “update.zip” files. Mind you, the update.zip method is by far the easiest and fool-proof way to update/hack such things.

Again, for now it’s best to let the more technically inclined to toil away at the hole Cliq rooting thing. Though if you’re feeling adventurous, by all means go ahead. Just be sure to report back here when you’re done.

How’s that Moto CLIQ update doing for ya…?

Motorola CLIQ users have now had a good 12 hours to wring their freshly updated CLIQ’s to the ends of their ropes. I have to say that it’s an extremely good thing that Motorola pushed out the update they did — fixing numerous bugs and tweaking app/memory/processor management as to get a grip on that abysmal battery life. But I’m sure like me, many of you are disappointed that you’re still stuck with Android 1.5 and weren’t upgraded to 1.6 at least. No excuses. Android really needs to watch this fragmentation. The bigger Android becomes, the larger the cracks that form will be. With that ominous note aside, I’ll simply end by asking: “How does it fare?”
