With iPad Debut, CNN iOS App Goes Free! #ios #cnn #ipad

  • December 14, 2010 10:02 pm

When the official CNN iPhone app debuted earlier this year, it was quickly regarded as one of the best looking and most enjoyable to use news apps. But now, the CNN iPhone app has been topped — by the official iPad version. Following on the CNN iPhone apps strengths, design and UI layout is a big focus. Large, vivid pictures abound as to video. Furthermore, the app itself has three separate views: broadsheet (pictured above), list view, and slide show. The list view layout in particular is the best layout for those seeking up to the minute, constant updates as it automatically updates stories as events unfold. For the more visual news readers out there however, the slideshow and broadsheet layouts are where it’s at.

Also debuting with the CNN iPad app today is a new pricing model — Free all around. Time Warner-owned CNN is making the news organization’s official iPad app free from the beginning and cutting the CNN iPhone app down to size as well, dropping from $1.99 initially at launch, to $0.99, and now to free. Seems worthy of your time, does it not?

“It’s On Like…D’oh, monkey dong”

I guess that is what we’ll have to say from now on, since Nintendo wants to trademark “it’s on like donkey kong.”(I got consent to say that for this article only, TAKE THAT OTHER SITES!!!)

So yeah, I doubt it will get passed. I mean, I have heard this said for as long as I can remember, but personally have never said it even though the DK games have always been held close to my heart. I kind of think it is ridiculous to try to TM this. I’ll try to follow this story as it is goes through the process to be trademarked, and update this in the future. It could happen. I hope not, because I use this every time I drag my wife upstairs by her hair.

If Nintendo wins this, it will ruin my “evening time” with my wife. Apple already ruined the ending by taking “There’s An App For That!”

Nearly perfect CNN iPhone app falls short…

  • September 29, 2009 11:37 am

cnn-iphone-appAs is common these days, exclusive deals, greed, and some form of “content protection” is ruining yet another service. This time it is the CNN iPhone app. While I won’t argue that to date, it is the best stand alone news app available in the Apple App Store, the fact that we still can’t get a live stream of a reputable news station is a pain in the ass. The hurdle? It isn’t Apple. Heck, it isn’t even AT&T in this example. It is cable providers. They make money off of selling certain channels to individuals and local cable providers. The internet and it’s streaming goodness is a monkey wrench in their yearly profit margins — why look the other way or *gasp* innovate and embrace new technology when they can lock their content down and restrict it more?

While the app is a step in the right direction and comes out nearly perfect, the lack of an actual live stream keeps it from a full 5/5 in my book. Granted, the news clips that are included are of good quality and frequently updated. Still, is anyone getting tired of greed, exclusive deals, and other corporate BS getting in the way of convenience?

If you’ve downloaded the CNN iPhone app, how do you like it? Do you regret your decision?

Ashton Kutcher vs. CNN part III (link to interactive chart)

If you haven’t been following the ongoing and quickly progressing drama that is building between Ashton Kutcher and CNN, Ashton declared just mere days ago that he wants to be the first Twitter user to break 1,000,000 followers.  However Mr. Kutcher has some competition: CNN.  *Interesting side note…the CNN Twitter account wasn’t even run by CNN until recently.  Instead a man by the name of James Cox, a San Francisco native held that honor.  However, CNN has since comindeered said account* Back on track, Ashton also has a second competitor who hasn’t even been mentioned…Britney Spears.  But for the sake of the story we won’t include her.  Ok, now seriously getting back on track.  The quickly unfolding race between Ashton Kutcher and CNN has taken many turns in the last couple of days, so much so that it can be hard for many to follow.  Fret not as I have very quickly and easily laid out the developing race as it has unfolded so far.
