Kinesis Keyboard: An expensive, wrist contorting mind game of plastic keys.

kinesis

A plain, flat keyboard is just so boring. For someone such as myself whom spends most of their day typing away, a good keyboard can make all the difference between a good day and a bad day. Ergonomic keyboards have been around for years claiming to reduce stress, tiredness, and injuries from those living in front of a computer screen. But do they really? At least in my experience with certain ergonomic keyboards, after the initial break-in period of getting used to a goofy shaped contraption, all is well. Though I’m not so sure how well the Kinesis Keyboard above would fair.

From the heavily scalloped letter keys to placement of the remaining keys located oddly split and staggered in the middle of the board, I’m left scratching my head as to what it feels like. Besides helping aching hands, this keyboard may also cure cancer, have a solution for world hunger, and know the origins of the universe. Well, the $300 price tag would lead us to suspect so at least…

I guess that mystery of “what it feels like” will forever remain a question as I simply can’t find myself spending $300 on a radical keyboard design, much less one that looks as if it were made out of 1980′s plastic even if world hunger could be solved. Sorry kiddies, no dinner for you tonight…

Feeling daring?

Wetkeys Keyboard: For the clumsy and social, recreational swimmers.

  • December 11, 2009 1:49 pm

wetkeys

Some of us somehow missed out on the common sense bus that passed by each of our hospital rooms at birth. Why it skipped some and made extra long stops at others is unknown. But the fact the matter is, if you’re going to have liquids near a computer, put them on a different plane at least so that you’ll have a few extra seconds to save your precious electronics in the event of a spill. If that seems like to much work or you like to go swimming with your keyboard, fix your gaze above at the “Wetkeys” keyboard.

Besides being immune to the now common coffee/cola spill that claims so many electronic lives, one other benefit of the Wetkeys is the ability to get a thorough washing when the dirt and grime of your greasy digits becomes to much to handle. A simple dunk in water or run it through the dishwasher.

I can see it now: Your friend comes over and see’s you pulling half a dozen keyboards out of the dishwasher and drying them off — all the while an eerie silence permeates the kitchen with either side unable to speak. You with your back turned to him are smirking from ear to ear as your know your friend’s jaw is 3/4 of the way down to the ground.

The convenience and piece of mind won’t come cheap. Prices start at $50 and climb all the way up to $200 smackers. The latter is a tad on the high side for a collection of letters on plastic squares. But again, these are magical waterproof letters. If I were you and had a dad like mine, I’d pick one up for the old man, computers and clumsiness don’t go hand in hand. Lord knows how much longer he can tempt fate before frying the hell out of his keyboard. With Wetkeys, now he doesn’t have to.

Halloween invades your desktop: Grim Reaper Speakers

  • October 7, 2009 6:54 am

Want to bring a bit of Halloween flair to your desktop this year? Tired of listening to music through those tiny speakers on your computer and instead want to pick up something with a tad more oomph? Look no further than the Grim Reaper Speakers. While in reality they won’t be that much of a bump when audio quality is concerned as their peak output is a rather paltry 2.5 watts, the design is the real kicker. Don’t think Halloween is the only time you can gift the kiss of death as these would make pretty good stocking stuffers for those who like to be a tad different. Now, the only thing you have to accept is the price — $36.69. A bit high. Maybe. But for some, scaring little children and expressing your inner demon has no limits.

So they banned texting while driving? How about…”Computing while driving”?

steering-wheel-laptop-desk

So what states and governments alike are banning texting while driving. When you are using the Laptop Steering Wheel Desk while swerving through traffic at 90 mph and get pulled over, you can politely tell the officer that there currently isn’t any law against using a computer while driving (to my knowledge). You can also invite him to watch “I Love Lucy” re-runs with you…though I don’t know how well that will go over. Heck, you could probably pipe in a video feed from a camera mounted on your dashboard and go all futuristic. Still, I don’t recommend actually testing it out while driving…obviously.

Jokes aside, the Laptop Steering Wheel Desk is real, and real handy at that — while you’re parked of course. Simply hooking this mobile desk to your steering wheel gives you a sturdy workspace to conduct whatever it is you have to do while in the drivers seat. While I can certainly see the added benefit some would garner from using this in the cars, especially the mobile business people who work out of their vehicles quite often, I’m just as content with sitting in another seat and putting the laptop on my…uhhh…lap. Still, for $24.95, many will find the price just right. Any takers?

Silicon keyboard resists the body’s many fluids, continues to run like a champ

  • June 9, 2009 3:47 pm

keyboard-silicon

If you eat and drink by your computer, you most likely have experienced some sort of nefarius substance inhabiting your precious collection of plastic squares with letters stamped on them.  Normally the way to remedy such situations is to unplug the keyboard and use either a damp cloth, paper towel, wet wipe, etc. in hopes that the grime will come clean without harming your keyboard.  But what about those more serious accidents in which large quantities of some odd substance makes its way into/onto your keyboard?  For that, the trash can is the best answer.  However, if you were using the (can we get a shorter name please) Mini Flexible Roll Up Waterproof Silicon Keyboard, all of that cleaning and fear of spills would be literally wiped away.  (haha get it…wiped away on a silicon anti-stain keyboard…………*hangs head*) Moving past my failed past life, the silicon keyboard pictured above is great at resisting stains of any type.  Cleaning the few stains and substances that do adhere to the device can be taken care of with a quick submersion in some shallow water or a wetter than normal wipe.  You really can’t go wrong with this keyboard.  Sure it is a gaudy yellow color but the fact that practically nothing can harm this keyboard coupled with the more than reasonable cost of $15 means someone is getting a new keyboard tonight.

For those special moments in life…USB Bean Microwave

  • June 9, 2009 5:16 am

beansawave2

Who wants a nice bag of freshly popped popcorn or decadent rich chocolate when you can have something so much better? What could be better than fresh popcorn or chocolate? Beans. But, beans pose a small problem. They taste much better when warm, something that isn’t exactly common straight from the can. Computer squatters and bean lovers everywhere rejoice. The USB Bean Microwave is your gadget that will effectively blend your two loves and bring a new sense of wholeness to your life. Supposedly, the brains behind the beans, Heinz, have found a way to use mobile phone frequencies specially tuned to certain wavelengths in order to achieve the cooked food we human beings so desire. Moving into the realm of mobile cooking on a whole new level, Heinz is also reportedly working on a way to use lithium ion batteries to power mini microwaves of the future. Exciting huh! For now, the product is considered the smallest microwave in the world and would make a neat addition to any nerds gadget stockpile. Too bad it is still in “beta” form. Hopefully this USB mini Bean Microwave gets good customer feedback so production can get kicked into high gear. Let’s just hope they leave that $160 price tag at home. Another picture waits in hiding to drop kick your eyes just after the click.
