Disassembling gadgets is probably one of the greatest past times of geeks everywhere. Whether we’ve flogged our gadgets beyond recognition or just finished unwrapping it from the box, taking them apart starts an entirely new journey. It’s exciting yet scary at the same time. On one hand, you’re venturing into the unknown splendor of circuit boards and silicon. On the other, you always run the risk of permanently neutering your beloved gadget. But such is the price we pay.
Mini word-filled voyage aside, check out the full XP Phone breakdown hosted over at BSN, and conducted by ITG (In Technology Group).
Futurama may or may not be a “geek” thing. LEGOs however, are! And when there’s LEGOs in vast numbers, you know something nerdy is in play. Speaking of nerdy, Matt De Lanoy is a massive nerd, creating this 5′ x 7′ LEGO-fied version of Futurama. Initially, Matt started with just a few structures and characters. Obviously he got sucked in. The rest as they say, is history.
There’s nothing you can’t build with LEGOs. Check out more of Matt’s creation on his Flickr page or jump on in for a few more screenies…
No, this isn’t some new scheme from Verizon to milk you for more dollars with a new snow white Moto DROID color option. The Snow Droid is a tad more cheery. Quite simply, it’s a replica R2-D2 snowman droid. In the colder regions of the planet (read: most of the US…that means you Floridians too), snow has been falling in a bizarre showcase of unusual cold sweeping the US.
So if you find yourself in one of these unusually cold climates or are a cold weather native, make this year the year you break out of the norm. Make a Snow Droid. Wow your friends, your parents, and strangers with your artistic display or sub-arctic crystalline construction.
You know, with each and every “far out there” or geeky invention I see come forth from the great island way out east, I find myself second guessing my decision of staying here in the states. Of course, I don’t have too many options at the moment, finishing school and all. But nothing can quite compare to the uniquely weird things that Japan’s greatest minds put forth. Case in point: AR equipped vending machines. If you though AR was just for mobile devices and happened to stroll by one of currently three test locations for Tokyo’s latest craze, you’d be dumbfounded and awestruck to say the least.
Instead of merely choosing a product, slipping in some money, and walking off with your delectable treat, citizens of Tokyo can now interact with their food (didn’t your mother always tell you not to play with your food…?) in ways that should make any nerd quiver with unabated excitement. The first of many things that make’s Japan’s tech scene so much better than ours in regards to AR equipped vending machines is — (1) Customers can bring a printed or digital (on phone screen) copy of a QR code to a vending machine, scan it in and receive a free product sample. The road keeps going however with (2) an expanded experience as after buying any product, holding it within eye’s reach of your smart vending machine will ‘splay across the machine a visual symphony of infographs attempting to draw you deeper in, wanting and needing to spend more.
At the very least, it’s a novel concept that ads ever more flare and geekery to a typical Japanese citizen’s daily lives. Hey, I’m far from complaining or mocking. Hell, their vending machines have AR! I’m stuck here in northing Indiana wondering why I can’t get a damn traffic controlled light at the end of my block in the year 2009. We’ve all been there, the lone red light that waits for no one. See you in Tokyo…
I love gadgets. Could you tell? With a vast amount of gadgets comes a lot of chargers and cords to keep track of. And believe me, I’ve got a lot of gadgets. Sometimes finding a computer or one of those nifty wall converters that turns a standard wall outlet into a normal USB port just can’t be done. So there you are starring at two completely capable and electrically charged holes in the wall yet no way to harness the energy. If you’re like me, spending a couple hours swapping out your standard outlets for the USB wall outlets above is a no brainer.
I’m not an electrician by any means though after reading through the self how-to I can honestly say anyone could do it with minimal effort. The benefits of such a transformation are obvious — easy and convenient gadget charging. With more and products gaining USB plugs, swapping out a few outlets for USB outlets doesn’t seem like a bad idea after all now does it?
Tattoos haven’t changed much over the decades. It’s still essentially the same basic concept: A needle moving in and our of your skin with some sort of ink or dye on the tip. Other forms of body modifications such as piercings and implanting metallic objects ahve added a twist to the whole process, but a “tattoo” is still the same. Rebels and body artists of tomorrow will find LED tattoos the next big craze.
The idea may seem crazy at first, but it’s really not that complex. Simple silicon transistors measuring roughly 1 millimeter long and 250 nanometers wide are placed closely together on a thin layer of dissolving silk. The silk dissolves in the body leaving the circuits behind. Irritation is non-existent as the circuits are so tiny that they are completely unnoticeable to the “wearer”.
It’s pretty cool if you ask me. A little less permanent than ink and highly geeky. Those worried about the procedure should know that silk has been used for years in the medical field for various uses because of it’s ability to be broken down by the body with no harmful byproducts of effects. If it’s good enough to conform to the ultra strict rules in medicine then it’s good enough for the rest of us.
So what will you rock in LED fashion under your skin? The Mario Mushroom? Circuit board outline? Logo of your favorite tech company? Skies the limit…
Can you believe that just a few years ago, a “cool” ringtone was one of those polyphonic pieces of garbage? Hey, I can’t poke too much fun as even I at one point was captivated by this chorus of simple notes strung together (my how we’ve come so far…). These days, making your own ringtones can come from any number of sources. With Apple’s iPhone being the force to be reckoned with in the consumer smartphone market, customizing said gadget with your own personal flare is pretty desirable. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t all you to create ringtones out of already purchased or 3rd party downloaded songs without paying extra money. My reasoning for such double payments are best reserved for another time and instead focus on what this article is really about — Free stuff! Now that got your attention didn’t it?
The makers of RingtoneStudio are hosting a contest for you iPhone toters to spur sales and get the word out about their product. If you couldn’t gather or long for more info, simply put, RingtoneStudio makes personalizing your iPhone with custom ringtones insanely easy and fun. The more friends and family you sign on board with RingtoneStudio the better as more sales equal bigger prizes. The prize giveaway is broken down into 3 phases:
Phase 1: 3 lucky, completely random users of RingtoneStudio will be drawn each winning a $15 iTunes gift card.
Phase 2: Once sales of RingtoneStudio hit 100 units, 2 more lucky winners will receive $50 iTunes Giftcards.
Phase 3: After sales surpass 250 units, one lucky winner will walk away with the grand prize — a fully *legally* unlocked iPhone 3G
**You do not need to actually purchase anything to be entered into the contest as online entry forms can be found at createiphoneringtones.com/contest/. But remember, if you don’t purchase anything, and the next person doesn’t either, no one will win any prizes. Do yourselves a favor and give a little. It could pay out in the end.
The whole shebang is pretty awesome if you ask me. The contest started on November 1st, but don’t get your little gadget loving self in a twist as you have until November 30th to get in on the sweet action.
When riding in the Pac-Man car, try not to ram other colored cars in hopes of eating them with your grill. While in Pac-Man/video game world, such moves are encouraged and aid in the advancement of Pac-Man, in reality world with modern physics and such, doing so is likely to result in multiple headaches for you. The individual who created the Pac-Man car shown above definitely went all out. Every square inch of this car is in some form or another Pac-Man-ized. I’d drive it down the road wouldn’t you. It’s cool! The only question is, does the horn make any Pac-Man sounds? More pictures inside..
Upon first look, this metal shaft descending from the ceiling may may seem like the perfect accessory to a night full of fun at “the bachelor pad”. Capped off with pizza, beer, and a few female companions, who would say no? But this isn’t any normal female companion pole. (Plus, I cringe at the thought of some woman jumping all over this thing only to have it rip from the ceiling, showing the spectators in vast amounts of plaster, drywall, paint dust, plumbing, water — pretty much everything but the kitchen sink…hah, that’s because it’s on the floor. It wouldn’t fall on you. You would fall in it…)
No sir. It’s a sink faucet. A clever one at that. Your bathroom/kitchen faucet will be the talk of the town when they all know instead of building on the floor like everyone else, you’re movin’ on up.
Such a chic design isn’t without faults though. A pipe right in front of your face, depending on the size, is a minor problem when trying to adjust your face early in the morning. Plus, pipes jutting from the ceiling aren’t exactly the pinnacle of home decor. I wouldn’t really give the last “problem” too much concern though. If you’re installing a ceiling mounted faucet, I would highly assume some form of barrier or designer sheath will encase the bare water pipe. Wouldn’t you? Shoot. I wouldn’t mind outfitting my house with a few…
