Another not gadget that has captivated my inner being. I know from experience that kids love crayons. Not just to color with, but to eat too. Hey, don’t kid yourself. We’ve all pretty much tried to stick on in either our nose, mouth, or both at some point during our childhood.

Now we have nothing left to do but thank Luxirare — 50% thank them that is. This marvelous invention of human ingenuity isn’t actually available for sale. Buzz kill, I know. Ingredients for a couple crayons and another pic await you inside…

I played with LEGO’s as a kid. I play with LEGO’s now. Not much has changed. I’m a bit taller, shower more regularly, and can drive a car (legally). But other than that, I’m still a big kid at heart. Perhaps that’s why I get made fun of for playing with LEGO’s from time to time. It doesn’t really matter to me as I’m a nerd and will always be a nerd. There’s no hope for me. And with toys such as the LEGO bot you see above, I will love every second of it…

The LEGO creation crawling the top of this post is proof that you old folk currently grazing the planet were born years decades early. First off, this thing is entirely made of LEGO’s. Second, when it approaches gaps in the ground, it will attempt to roll out it’s own little LEGO bridge, cross it, and then roll it back up once finished!

And to think, we used to have to pretend our LEGO creations made noises…

I’ve often heard that kids who are bored are kids that get in trouble. Not a kid Nick Hagman decided that yes, he was bored. And yes, he was going to beat Super Mario a 1,001st time. Except this time he’d be a bit more creative and not use the typical Nintendo controller.

This crafty chap took it upon himself to configure a Dance Dance Pad to take over button mashing duties and make a now easy game inexplicably difficult once again. As Nick points on in the movie, it took many tries to get a working “demo video” that didn’t reek of amateur.

It’s a pretty sweet mod no less. Jump inside and eat your heart out folks…

Think of one of your biggest wishes when you were a kid. For some, it was a constant rain of chocolate. Others wanted an unlimited supply of toys. Yet some were more logical in their wants and wishes, and instead sought out something a tad more useful, say, massive, larger than life LEGO blocks. If that just so happens to quantify your early years, a new building block by Ecomat is just for you.

The ultimate form of tech nerdy know how is taking one or more washed up, used gadgets and turning them into something new and useful. In this case, it’s an old cassette tape being turned into a tie, specifically using the actual magnetic tape material inside the cassette.

The actual composition of these “cassette ties” is actually 50% tape 50% thread. But those outside the world of tech, no one’s the wiser.

The coolest part isn’t what it’s made out of but what it can still do — play music. If you happen to have a spare magnetic head lying around, running it over one of these nifty ties here will produce audible tones of the original tape recordings. How many ties have you seen that are that “hi-tech”?

As we cross into this week’s hump day, we’re left looking at what we’ve accomplished so far, and where we’re yet to go. One thing that I always look ahead towards is what I plan on doing over the weekend. For me, the weekend is the best time of the week. I’m sure I’m not alone. While I’ve got my weekend booked, some may be looking for something to fill theirs with. For those who like little projects, the LED Mohawk Helmet created by “Garrett”, is something that just makes sense. I mean, nerds like flashy things (LED’s) and projects. Put them together and something resembling the LED Mohawk Helmet usually comes forth.

It’s no doubt bright, unsightly, and to some, obnoxious. But that’s what makes it so great. I can tell you that if I ever sit down and attempt this little ditty, I’d wear the hell out of that thing. I’ve seen some pretty over the top and downright insanely involved wedding invitations in my time. But this — “Darina and Niko’s Incredible Adventure.”? The invitations are actually two specially designed Mario-style video games that were sent out to all of their guests. The coolest part is that the games are actually playable, with beating the game an actual requirement to finding out the when, where, and whatever else logistics of the big holy union. How cool is that?

LEGOs are geeky enough. Star Wars — times two. Throw fooseball into the mix? Dear god, you’re asking for trouble. Austrian LEGO/Star Wars/Fooseball nut, 2×4 did the unthinkable and mashed together several staples of a geek’s “way of life” into one of the greatest creations of all time: a Star Wars fooseball table constructed entirely out of LEGOs. Does it get any better? Yes, it’s fully playable. Try not to let your 2-ton jaw hit the handles as it rockets to the floor. Rebuilding this beast would be an undertaking of epic proportions. Not to mention, watching this crumble to pieces would make any geek cry. Who’s ready for a few rounds?

Though I’m 98% 99% sure I couldn’t even come close to affording the bill for such grand display of modern art. Just in case you’re curious, the Step House was built by Herzog & de Meuron for the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Another bonus — I want to visit Germany. (Anyone care to join me?) Of the few faults I have with the iPhone, the back casing really isn’t one of them. It’s designed well and does it’s job. What more could you ask for? For some, the move to plastic casings after the first gen iPhone was done largely to (1) reduce cost and (2) increase reception to the more cellular loving characteristics of plastic over metals. Understandably, some want the added reception of plastic and the sleek, sturdy look of metal. Solution: Titanium alloy.

You see, Titanium alloy is a much more RF transparent metal than say aluminum (which Martin also tried, though to disappointing results). Obviously, Titanium alloy is also bit too cost prohibitive for a large scale, mass market object such as the iPhone. But for a single user with access to decent CAD software and the required machinery to construct said case, the outcome is only limited by the level of the individual’s creativity.

The creator of the Titanium alloy iPhone case above, Martin, says that besides being sturdier and enjoying the same amount of reception as with the old plastic casing, it looks helluva cool. We don’t disagree with you one bit Martin.

As for plans to expand production — consider this a DIY project. Time to get crafty.

Wow, wow, and more wow. Just when I thought I’d seen the coolest and most complex LEGO creation, someone has to come along and smash my previous idol to pieces. Though you have to admit, being impressed and having your “idol” smashed to pieces because a newer, bigger, and better one comes along can actually be pretty exciting. In the case of the “LEGO Crawler Town”, perfection and creativity have reached a new peak.

The description according to the builders:

“Crawler town roams the barren wastes of a post steampunk world after cataclysmic climate change do to excessive coal use. Several such cities exist but Crawler town is the most popular due to the Aero 500 hydrogen fuel cell Air races that are held. Many people travel the wastes to Crawler town for vacation and to enjoy rare luxuries like Pizza, fresh vegetables and Beer. Traveling the wastes in search of minerals and aquifers (vital for survival) the mobility of the city keeps it away from the vicious sand storms of the wastes.”

…one can never have too much pizza and beer. I’m still amazed actually. No, even more-so. I’m dumbfounded and completely geeked. Starstruck?

Recycling old gadgets and stuff is a great way to not only make the planet just a wee bit happier, as I can’t tell you how many awesome creations I’ve seen created from recycled materials. Awesome creations such as the X-ray Umbrella show that even after a gadget or product’s “useful” lifecycle, there’s still plenty to be had. In the case of this umbrella, used up x-ray sheets were spliced together to create a pretty neat head turner. Though, being made out of x-ray sheets, I’m not sure how resilient it would be to repeated down pours. Oh well, at least it would look cool hanging in your foyer no?
