Millennium Falcon Server [Mod]

  • May 7, 2010 8:27 am

Crafty fellows we nerds are. Servers are a rather utilitarian affair normally. It’s just a bunch of computer parts in a box designed to connect many devices together and manage multiple services. The Millennium Falcon server mod however eschews the simple designs of the normal server and instead draws on one thing that makes many a geek tick — space/sci-fi/Star Wars.

The outer shell is a 1979 Millennium Falcon model with Apple G4 internals plugging away at the daily grind. It’s a pretty sweet mod for sure and one more example of how Star Wars can literally be integrated into pretty much anything you think of. Think you can top this…?

OS Xbox Pro the coolest Xbox mod. Period. Mac Pro stuffed inside…

Ok, did I miss some announcement on some bizarre national mod week? I mean the OS XBox Pro (pictured above) is now one of many gadget mods we’ve covered over the last couple of days. All things considered, it could be the millionth custom mod and I would still be just as captivated and geeked out. Some of you may be unimpressed as it appears to be a minor Xbox mod with perhaps some tweaked internal hardware. It’s sitting their in it’s old age all innocent looking. Oh dear reader…how you couldn’t be more wrong. The OS Xbox Pro is damn near an entire Mac Pro stuffed inside of an original Xbox casing. This ingenious and awe-inspiring combination of brains, beauty and creativity is the brain child of Will Urbina. The only requirement Will set out to meet in the beginning was to create a custom mod that was able to run Final Cut Pro. Did he succeeded? Before you check out the video below, try and at least read over a couple of the specs…

  • 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550s
  • NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT
  • 8GB of DDR3 Crucial Ballistix 1333MHz RAM
  • Highpoint RocketRAID 2640×1
  • 16GB 1.8″ Super Talent MasterDrive KX SSD
  • 2x 500GB 7200rpm Seagate Momentus HDD
  • 2x 160GB 5400rpm Seagate Momentus HDD
  • Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR

Ya, this little mod that appears to be a simple Xbox tweak will clean the clocks of many multimedia/entertainment computers as well as several mid-range gaming rigs. It’s chock full of hardware — something that seems almost impossible given the Xbox’s rather small case (compared to a traditional computer with similar specs.) If any custom mod has ever left any type of motivation building within, the OS Xbox Pro is definitely “the one”. Who wants 6?

Radeon HD 5870 X2 is a massive, massive card

  • October 31, 2009 9:09 am

As sad as it is, I don’t have a pimped out gaming PC. I’ve lusted for one for years. I don’t have a preference as to pre-built or custom though I know custom is the way to go for us picky folks. Still, other things keep getting in the way. In the world of gaming PC’s, the gamers #1 concern is a big burly graphics card. One that will move pixel based mountains and pwn Crisis framerates like a champ. Once such card that could be capable of such has so graciously allowed itself to be snapped is the Radeon HD 5870 X2. Mind you this is an early engineering sample of the card. Regardless, all you need to concern yourself with is the size of this card. It’s huge. 13.5″ huge to be exact. Really nothing else to say. Just sit back and stare. (Don’t stare with your mouth open though. Then you just look dumb…)
