There are tons of geeky clothing options available for those who just have to wear their personality on their sleeve. But what if you want to go above and beyond “normal geeks”? What if you want a piece of geeky clothing that will make even the most hardcore geeks step back, double take, and gawk? Well then, you my friend need a Cassette Tie.
Constructed from a 50% tape cassette tape and 50% polyester blend, these ties are actually quite simple and pretty “low-tech”. After turning the cassette of your choice into a tie, a basic hand-made reader is all that is needed to pick up and play audio information still readable on the tie. How cool is that!
The ties are the brain child of Alyce Santoro and Julio Cesar as they tried to come up with something unique, retro, and eco-friendly all in one fell swoop. And succeed they did. The ties are available at Surpermarket HQ for $90. The reader on the other hand will involve a few displays of craftiness from you. Making your own Cassette Tie reader isn’t hard and can be done with any old Walkman player. Watch the vid below for the full rundown.
It doesn’t seem like that long ago that custom “bottom dock” BlackBerry themes were the “it” thing with theme developers anxious over a UI layout that seemed rather simple. After watching the clip above, you can truly see how quickly BlackBerry themes have progressed in the relatively short time span of 1-2 years. The particular them showcased above was created by “Z Man Designs” and is titled “Transitions”. If you like the idea of organized and neatly arranged UI’s, you’re definitely going to want to give Transitions a look.
It’s by far the most innovative and unique BlackBerry theme to date. I’m really liking the animation effects as they do awesome job of covering up the aging qualities of the bone stock BlackBerry UI and OS. As far as organization is concerned, the theme breaks apps into four main categories: Apps, Messaging, Media, and Settings. As you scroll between the four categories, sub-categories and apps are displayed with crisp icons and smooth animations.
Given how cool this theme is, it comes off as a steal for only $2.00! I’d gladly give Zach a couple more dollars for a job well done. If you like Transitions and have your own unique theme idea, you may want to try your theme building chops in the “Transitions Contest”. It’s certainly worth your while as the winner will receive free Z Man Themes for a lifetime! An all around awesome deal from an awesome theme developer.
You know, every time I stumble upon another steampunk-ified object I start to think “oh my god…again?” with a few exceptions here and there for truly impressive and unique ideas. Taking something as ordinary as a pumpkin is different from normal gadget/electronic versions of steampunk’d devices we’ve seen a lot of lately. But, in the spirit of Halloween and having a little fun, I decided to share this Steampunk Pumpkin with you. I admit, this metal clad pumpkin is actually pretty cool. I’m sure there are at least a few curious cells in between your ears. Go ahead and give the vid below a watch. What can it hurt?
If your artistic eye has been giving Google Chrome the looksie for some time now but are damned near the end of your rope, having to stare at that plain jane blue/greyish tint that current adorns the Google born browser? Google responded several months ago with a new themes section allowing users to skin their browser with several different colors and styles. Though, the initial themes that were released were “ok” at best as most of them suffered from god awful color combinations and layout. Not to be deterred however, Google is back at it with new “Artist Themes”. Per Google:
Today, we are introducing Artist Themes for Google Chrome. We invited leading artists, architects, musicians, illustrators, filmmakers and fashion and interior designers from across the globe to create artwork for an unusual canvas: the modern web browser. The result is a vibrant fusion of art and technology, with a hundred Artist Themes that we hope will add a touch of inspiration and delight to your web browsing experience with Google Chrome.
As you can clearly see from the images above (and below), Google has apparently been busy in the design department as Chrome users now have quite the selection when personalizing their browser is concerned. To put it in perspective of how many new themes there are, the image below is but a snippet of the total amount of new themes as there’s still plenty of room for me to scroll down.
So take a few minutes and stop on by the Google Chrome themes area and give a few themes a test drive. I for one find the Artist inspired themes many times better than the original themes, though it’s worth noting many aren’t the most “usable”. Usable of course in the sense that there’s so much going on it’s hard to see lines between tabs, text, etc. Still, it’s worth giving the themes section another looksie. Find any you like? Lets us in on your favorite!
Clocks have had the same general design and means of telling time for centuries. Sure they’ve progressed technologically from say a sun dial to a digital clock that displays numbers, but the overall concept is the same. Also true, attempts to radically change the way time is displayed such as some clocks which show the time in binary or with some other creative combination of fancy shapes and or characters are often hard to decipher.
The Word Clock however is actually fairly easy to glean the necessary information from. The designer and creator was inspired after seeing a similar clock on an industrial design website and decided to try his own hand at home made geekery. This clock will certainly test your geeky skills as you’re going to have to get your hands dirty. If you don’t have 120 LED’s laying around the house, you might want to start there. Other things to brush up on would be your etching skills, and knowledge of circuit boards and other things geek. Hey, actually being a geek isn’t for the faint of heart.
While the title may play favorites with a particular device such as the Bold, this latest theme from premium theme site, the next theme from Elecite, which is nothing short of unique, is actually available for the 8900, Bold, and Storm. The theme, titled “Noble”, has 3 dedicated buttons on the homescreen with 6-8 more (depending on device) hidden below in a nice sliding dock. No matter what device or wallpaper you have, the icons always look nice and crisp meaning you will enjoy hours of eye candy goodness. If you feel the urge to splurge, $6.99 is all it takes. Pics after the click.
If you a big city nut and can’t get enough of the concrete jungle in your neck of the woods and also happen to be a Blackberry afficienado, Elecite has yet another slam dunk of a theme with the “Urban Blackberry Theme”. This theme has a very unique “ribbon” (for lack of a better word) along the bottom right corner of the screen with room for 8 icons – 3 are visible at a time though as mentioned, it the band slides back and forth. The real beauty of this theme is the wallpaper, or wallpaper(s) that is…ten wallpapers to be exact. Yes, ten cities from across the world cycle through on you screen giving you a glimpse at some of the worlds most spectacular cities:
Seattle
Manhattan
Sydney
Frankfurts
Dubai
Hong Kong
Perth
Shanghai
You may be saying “Hey dumby, that’s 8, can’t you count?”. Haha, yes you cycnical reader you I can. Their are two extra 3D wallpapers included that bring a “new dimension” to your Berry’s homescreen. If the concrete jungle is your ultimate nirvana, head on over to Elecite and give them the required $5.99 entrance fee as long as you have an 89xx, 9xxx, or 95xx device. More devices are hopefully planned.
