G1 to see Froyo afterall? Android employees say yes.

  • May 20, 2010 7:44 pm

It’s one thing for developers to look at Android and say that any updates can easily be ported to older hardware. But it’s an entirely different story if Android employees themselves get caught saying the same thing under the radar. According to the Android Police, a quick chat session they had with Android employees after the I/O event had wrapped up for the day is pretty alarming, if not somewhat common knowledge.

Droid gets the root treatment!

It’s been a busy two days with the site and all. So much to my surprise when I was taking a relaxing stroll through a couple Droid forums did I find the answer to my dreams (as of November 6th) — the Droid has finally been rooted. You know what this means folks: multi-touch is this close. No to mention, plenty of tweaking, endless hours exploring new ROM’s (when they become available) and overall getting a sense of newness will be returning to your device. Who doesn’t love a gadget reborn?

Just to highlight, if you don’t feel comfortable taking your Droid’s life in your hands, I’d advise against the process as it isn’t exactly as easy as say, an iPhone jailbreak. Get to it!

CyanogenMOD back with 4.2.1 stable release

  • October 27, 2009 10:38 am

Looking back but a mere month ago, hearing the word “CyanogenMOD” meant sadness and sorrow as it was at that time Google sent Mr “Mod a cease-and-desist order because of his Android tinkering. Thankfully a common ground was reached and Cyanogen could continue on pleasing many Android tinkers across the world. To mark the anniversary, a new stable release of CyanogenMOD, ver. 4.2.1 has been released. Different from other versions however, this one will lack all of the Google branded/Google Experience apps such as Gmail, maps etc. Don’t fret though as all of those lovely apps can be had if you first back up your device before going through with the CyanogenMOD install. See easy stuff. We can have our cake and eat it too. Perfect!

The main highlight of this latest release is the much improved speed that graces this latest Android build bringing lag and hangups to a cease. Another thing that may get your nerdy juices flowing is the option to lock the “home app”. Doing so will make all of those home refresh times when closing an app a thing of the past. Whew. Best get on it!

Cyanogen here to stay albeit a tad more homely

cyanogen
While the last couple days have been full of Android home brew drama centering around Cyanogen and the smackdown Google’s law department were set to hurl at him, it appears as if we can all breathe a sigh of relief. While the worst case scenario had Cyanogen completely shut down, we can all be thankful that he and Google came to a rather peaceful though ultimately ridiculous solution — from here on out, Cyanogen mods will be bare bones. Users of said ROM’s will be able to talk, text, etc. on your Android/Cyanogen device, but to get the true bread and butter apps such as Gmail, any type of syncing, and so on will require a previous backup with a device that featured authentic Google Experience apps. Super. So, besides bad press what did Google accomplish here kiddies? Absolutely nothing. Oh wait…bad press. That’s it. In all reality, while Google has a right to protect their services and apps, the way they went about it was slightly less than nice. Don’t you think? Let’s try not to let it happen again okay?
