If there’s one thing to be said about the ever evolving iOS jailbreak community, it’s this: They always seem to surprise us when “the end of jailbreaking” is apparently near. As Apple adds more and more functionality to iOS with each major release, the reasons to jailbreak lessen. With that said, the few remaining, important reasons to jailbreak include backdoor tethering and of course, system tweaks that Apple will never allow into the App Store. One such tweak launched yesterday by popular iOS hacker, chpwn, is by far the most useful yet simple iOS tweak to hit in recent memory. Introducing: “Zephyr”.
If you’ve seen Nokia’s N9 and its gesture-based multitasking feature, you’ve more or less already got the concept of Zephyr. Swiping up from the bottom of your iOS display will reveal the multitasking tray — same as the current method of double tapping. Similarly, swiping from the far left or right sides of your display to the other will switch you between open applications.
Zephyr is now available on Cydia for $2.99, and is highly, highly worth it. With the features that Apple has “borrowed” and implemented in past/current versions of iOS, we can’t see how Apple wouldn’t pick up chpwn’s Zephyr enhancements in the near future. It just feels right. But don’t take our word for it. Hop past the break for a quick video showing Zephyr in all it’s glory.

With the untethered iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak coming to a reality, my mouth is salivating the idea of getting my sweet sweet SBSettings back. For as long as I’ve had an iPhone I’ve been jailbroken. And for as long as I’ve had full access to my device I’ve had SBSettings installed. With my recent update to the iPhone 4S I’ve been using stock hardware with a gigantic frown on my face.
But as pod2g sits in his man cave writing code and trying to exploit Apple’s baby, the interwebs sits and waits on all the recent tweaks that have been released. Today’s most notable will come bring the Personal Assistant Siri some extra job responsibilities. After setting up the tweak, Siri will have access to your settings and will be able to toggle said settings, just like with the SBSettings shortcuts.
We’ve heard the issue with using an outside SiriProxy and the security risks involved with this, but developer, Hamza Sood, assures us that he used Mobile Substrate. No outside servers were used which results in a private and secure process. Once we see a jailbreak available for the iPhone 4S we’ll hopefully have this tweak in our hands. We’ll let you know as soon as it is released and how it works!
Hop on in for some more screen shots!
Just a short while ago, the iPhone Dev Team’s MuscleNerd Tweeted some news of the upcoming version of redsn0w. With the recent release of iH8sn0w’s iFaith, the use of SHSH Blobs on iOS 5.0 have become relevant again. When Apple released 5.0, downgrading iOS version was a thing of the past. And it wasn’t until the latest iFaith that we were able to begin rejoicing in the back up of our blobs.
MuscleNerd has confirmed that he latest build of the jailbreak utility will breath new life into TinyUmbrella and the art of saving your blobs. Running the latest version of TU for iOS 5.0.1 will save those blobs as well as your APTicket, yielding you the ability to downgrade after the iOS 5.0.x upgrade. This is huge news for the jailbreak community. Both dev teams hard at work on finding an untethered jailbreak exploit. If they happen to find a vulnerability that is compatible with 5.0/5.0.1, you will be able to save your blobs now and if you ever accidentally upgrade past that, redsn0w in use with said blobs will grant you access to the past.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the Chronic Dev Teams latest tool to utilize the community’s crash reports will yield an exploitable crack. Until then, we highly recommend hopping over to TinyUmbrella and getting your 5.0.1 blobs saved!

Anxiously waiting for the iPhone Dev-Team to get Apple’s latest iPhone 4S hacked and cracked so you can decimate it with all of your custom lusts? Keep waiting because it’s not ready for public consumption. But in the meantime here’s what is known regarding the iPhone 4S jailbreak — the iPhone Dev-Team has managed to get the 4S jailbroken and Cydia installed but that’s where the fun stops. According to @Musclenerd the iPhone 4S jailbreak is a:
“VERY preliminary 4S JB. (Huge missing pieces prevent public release. LOTS of work left)”
In short: The iPhone 4S jailbreak is still a ways from prime time/public release and the team can’t give a definite ETA. But knowing that some progress has been made is good, right?

Regardless of what you think of Lexus as a car brand, you have to respect them for blatantly putting their pro-jailbreak mindset front and center. The iPad you see above was found in an Orlando, Florida Lexus dealership that just so happens to have been jailbroken as it sports the infamous unofficial Cydia app installer.
Now we’ll just have to wait and see if Lexus pusses out like Toyota when Apple came along crying foul…
Yesterday it was jailbreak developer “Comex” that stunned quite a few by announcing his new upcoming internship at Apple. For someone who has spent so many years “on the run” from the very same company, it’s pretty amusing to see the tides turn. As for his jailbreak activities, we can’t see Comex continuing too much longer given his new employer’s past views on the practice of jailbreaking.
Today another iOS jailbreak dev sheds doubt on his own future. @chpwn has mentioned via Twitter that while he’s not joining Apple — a reply jokingly directed at some who have been vocalizing worries regarding future jailbreak efforts — he’s also getting bored (presumably with iOS/jailbreaking) and may not continue doing it much longer.
“I’m not joining Apple, but I’m also bored and probably not going to do much more jailbreak stuff. Probably.”
We’re not too worried at the moment. Chpwn’s statement is far from final. Not to mention, someone will rise up through the ranks and take over the jailbreak developer’s limelight. Worried?
Every once in a while we try to bring you decent apps or tweaks that you might want to install. After reading of a new Maps.app tweak release I thought I’d give it a try and see how it worked around downtown Portland. I am not sure how many of you out there actually use the default Map app that is force installed upon purchase, but for those of you that do, this is for you. I have a separate GPS that I use, but I do find myself using the Google Maps app quite frequently. Around a city that has an amazing public transportation, it comes in handy. While I was out and about this evening I thought I’d see how it worked and if it indeed work!
There isn’t much to it – but it is quite impressive. For those of you that have a broken speedometer and an iPhone car mount – you are in luck! If you are like me and don’t have an iPhone car mount, following a little dot as well as looking at a circle that gives your speed is quite troublesome, especially driving around a city with 1 eay streets and a lot of walking/biking pedestrians. Anyways… If you were in need of a speedometer on the default maps.app then this is the perfect companion to your jailbroken iDevice. Not only do you have the option for MPH, you can even switch between Feet Per Second, km/h, Meters Per Second and even Knots (for those ‘On A Boat’)!
Speed For Maps is an easy to configure application through your Settings.app. No icon is added – as with most tweaks – and even the speedometer overlay isn’t obtrusive on the map itself. Speed For Maps is a free tweak available right now via Cydia. For those of you with a car mount and the ability to check the map, this can come in handy. I will admit, while driving around it is a lot easier to look at the circle with a number in it than it was to try to differentiate the tiny digits on my TomTom. If the Google Maps.app that is built into every iDevice had turn-by-turn directions, we’d be in business with this tweak! Give it a try and let us know what you think!

We love the one stop shop that our iPhone’s are. But there’s certain scenarios — say jumping back and forth between laptop keyboard and iPhone for texting — that could be more streamlined. Apple (nor any other smartphone manufacturer) have a legitimate solution for “remotely” controlling/sending/reading SMS messages outside of your phone. For iOS users at least, WiFiSMS should be welcomed with open arms.
This handy little app allows you to connect up to your iPhone with any computer on the same WiFi network and send/receive SMS messages. Also worth noting is the ability to toggle on/off the ability to connect over WiFi. For people who will be doing a lot of computer-based texting over WiFi (whether public or private) will likely want to disable the feature when not in use for security purposes.
In the end, the only difference is (obviously) scaled up resolution which in all honesty looks like garbage. But hey. Convenience comes with its own share of drawbacks from time to time.
Be sure to hip up the BigBOSS repo in Cydia for the free download. But before you do that, hop past the break for a handy video that breaks it all down…

After yesterday’s media firestorm revolving around Facebook’s unofficially released iPad app, the hack to enable it, and subsequent attempt to block access by Facebook, comes a new development that should make everyone happy — you can now download a simple app and hack your way to real iPad Facebooking in now time!
The app is called “FaceForward” and is developed by popular iOS hacker chpwn. Installation is straight forward and will have the unofficial official Facebook iPad app up and running in seconds — even after Facebook’s ban hammer. The only stipulation — you’ll need a jailbroken iPad. Add this repo to Cydia and be on your way. Video of the install process after the break…
