Bad news — the HTC Thunderbolt has been officially delayed by Verizon, this according to internal documentation making its way around retail stores this afternoon. Also arriving late to the party will be the coveted 4G/LTE mobile hotspot services. Unfortunately, the only thing we have to go by is the “No ETA at this time” verbiage, which obviously doesn’t tell us much of anything in regards to when we’ll actually see these two VZW-branded products hit the market. Whatever the reason behind the delay, let’s hope it gets cleared up quickly.
Over the last few months, Samsung has been in hot water within various user forums for their slow to non-existant updates for their in-house Android devices. The Samsung Behold II/Android 1.6 fiasco was a large blemish in Sammie’s past. And the latest device, the Samsung Vibrant, appears to be another developing one with an XDA forum member by the name of MicBeast launching a class action lawsuit against not only Samsung, but T-Mobile as well.
The case: Samsung and T-Mobile are deliberately delaying Android updates to push people towards upgrading hardware sooner (at higher costs).
It will be interesting to see how far the case actually gets. Expect Android fragmentation, custom skins, and other update-related topics to move to the forefront of Android forums and the tech world as a whole if the case moves forward. We’ll be following this closely and report to you as it unfolds.

If I would have ordered a Dell Venue Pro in hopes of gifting myself an early Christmas present only to find out Dell had other plans would leave me a tad frustrated. So I can only imagine what the tens of thousands of customers who pre-ordered Dell Venue Pros are feeling. In a gesture of kindness however, Dell isn’t merely pumping out empty PR release after empty PR release in hopes people will forget. Instead, they’re giving all Dell Venue Pro pre-order customers a free Plantronics Explorer 240 Bluetooth headset.
The headset retails for $23 so it’s not like it’s a lavish gift or anything. Nevertheless, the attempt to appease disgruntled customers is nice.

If you were one of many Windows Phone 7 hopefuls who jumped on board Dell Venue Pro pre-orders a couple of weeks back, you’ve no doubt come to the realization that something isn’t right. For starters, the launch date — December 9th — has passed an no one is holding a shiny, new Dell Venue Pro. Furthermore, a rising number of users over at XDA are claiming their scheduled ship dates are being pushed back until January 6th. On top of that, one Dell (@AmyatDell) rep has been responding to concerned customers with the following:
“Someone from Dell should be calling you regarding this to give you some options.”
“…give you some options” is not something particularly reassuring. Such verbiage hints at longer than expected delays, or even worse, cancellations. However, eager customers finding out their Venue Pro has been delayed have received several different answers from Dell support ranging from “missing parts” to “excessive demand”.
Hopefully Dell releases an official statement to clear things up. We’ll keep you posted…
Update
An update from Dell cites the phones “being re-worked from the factory”. Though there has been some claims that phones will ship out within the next few days with whatever hardware/software issues persist. Though users who receive supposedly defective units can return them. Cluster — yes.

More often than not, seeing news of a favorite gadget of ours being delayed sends tears of sorrow through our souls. But every now and then, it’s bittersweet, bringing about an overall better experience. In the case of the HTC Merge, that same scenario is precisely what’s unfolding. According to @V3RDICT (whom references his statement based on a tweet by @NathanHTC, HTC’s Merge has been placed on hold so that the company can rig it up with a fancy new LTE radio.
A delay for much faster web speeds is something I can personally live with. Though re-testing the hardware and getting new approval from the FCC could realistically take many more weeks to a couple of months. At that rate, will it be relevant anymore given the pace at which Android hardware is evolving?
Looks like we’ll find out.
Fans of the seemingly vapor-ware Gran Tursimo 5 will want to take a seat if they’re envisioning a holiday full of GT5 racing. It appears that GT5 may not make it in time for the end of year celebrations. Shocking, I know…
Oh boy. The white iPhone 4 saga is getting downright ridiculous now with this on-again-off-again action. First it was delayed, and then it was delayed again. For good measure, Apple delayed it a third time, though never stating as to why it was many months behind schedule. And then it started to come out that it wasn’t necessarily a paint issue (as rumored in the past), but an issue with the translucent white back case leaking in too much light and causing the camera to glitch out when trying to determine white balance and such.
But putting all of that aside, it appeared as if redemption was closer than expected with a recent update to the Apple Store app including the white iPhone 4 in it’s list of items for purchase or pre-order. But it appears if that was short lived and that the white iPhone 4 ship has sailed, for the white iPhone 4 has now been pulled from the very same app.
Looks like those rumors of Apple canceling the white iPhone 4 and stalling with delay after delay after delay might be true after all…
These days, if you’re slow, you’re dead. Once your product falls behind in a release roadmap, it’s often far too hard to actually catch up. Even worse, your competitors will use your bad luck against you, pushing their agenda even harder. With that said, Mozilla is going to have a busy New Years. Instead of celebrating the release of their biggest update in many, many months, they’ll be preparing. Firefox 4 has officially been pushed back into 2011.
The original release had a late-2010 date attached to it. But software is fickle. As such, bugs and general development goals are the reason that we won’t be welcoming the new year with a new FF. But it’s not all bad. Those of you who aren’t against beta products can get in on the action with the latest Firefox beta. It’s actually pretty darn stable — enough so to be your daily browser. But if it’s a legit, honest to goodness release you’re looking for, don’t stand around waiting. There’s still 3 more betas due for release, with the 1st Release Candidate pegged for early 2011.
Any Firefox users a bit letdown?

Well this would certainly qualify for “scandalous” — A source of BGR close to one of the manufacturers for Apple’s iPhone 4 has come forward to shed some potentially saddening news. Specifically, the delays Apple is torturing us with are supposedly mere smokescreens for the cold hard truth — the iPhone 4 in white garb has been cancelled. The delays are an “easy” way to keep the original issue (paint matching between back case and home button) at bay while also allowing Apple to push off the possible fix until the iPhone 5 drops.
Speaking of that paint matching issue, the same source also claims that the manufacturers aren’t saying anything confirming Apple’s (and the rest of the world’s) belief that it was a manufacturing issue, and that that is a second smokescreen to the real issue. What that “real” issue exactly is isn’t mentioned. It’s certianly believable that Apple would purposely holding back the white iPhone 4, instead aiming to pick up the pieces and continue on with the iPhone 5. But it just seems so…odd. Though as all things of this nature go, tread lightly and avoid the salt.
Update
A post over at Cult of Mac points the blame finger at not the home button or mis-matched back case, but the camera. Specifically, the rumor (that we’ve heard tossed around a bit before) claims that the translucent white glass back of the white iPhone 4 lets too much light back into the case, screwing around with the camera sensor. As such, all pictures taken with the white iPhone 4 are washed out. This issue is magnified when using the flash. A “source close to the matter and Apple” said that the issue is severe enough that a complete redesign of the phone is looking to be the only solution — hence the multiple delays.
That definitely sounds plausible. Why can’t Apple just tell us what’s going on?
Update
And now the white iPhone has been pulled again. Cancelled? It’s looking more like it…
