Simply slapping a battery inside a piece of molded plastic won’t cut it anymore. Battery case manufacturers need to factor in size, weight, design, battery size and more. On top of that, they need to implement some type of design or feature to stand out from the crowd and differentiate.

We’ve been fortunate enough to handle and use a pretty good assortment of iPhone 4/4S battery cases over the last year including the BoostCase, Powerskin 2000, Incipio offGRID and offGRID Pro and Phonesuit Elite and more. Needless to say, we’ve built up a fairly extensive amount of knowledge regarding iPhone battery cases. And today we’re adding to that knowledge base with Spyder’s PowerShadow i4 2,000 mAh iPhone 4/4S battery case. Let’s see how it fares.

Design

Covered in a matte black, soft touch finish, the Spyder i4 mimics several other iPhone battery cases. This isn’t a bad thing though as we think the non-shiny, non-slip color/texture is a perfect combination. Another thing we like, and something that has seemingly become the norm, is the two-piece slider design. The top third of the i4 pops off the top allowing you to slide your iPhone in and out of the case. (We feel this is a better solution than some cases with you have to literally wrap the case around your phone – more secure and less prone to loosening with age.

As far as access goes, the entire screen of your iPhone is exposed. Ditto for the buttons and switches. Instead of button covers, the i4 has simple cutouts that allow easy access to all of your buttons. The only gripe we have (and it’s common with battery cases) is that the headphone cutout is too small. Anyone with a thicker 3.5mm headphone jack for mid- to higher-end headphones/earphones is going to need a small adapter to make everything play nice. Not a deal breaker per say, but something you have to consider (carrying around an adapter or removing the top piece every time you want to use headphones with a thick jack).

On the bottom of the case you’ll find a micro-USB port off to the far right, and a handful of metal contacts for the included dock (more on that in a minute) in the center.

If we are to be super picky, we’ll note that the addition of metal contacts to the bottom of the case make the bottom portion of the i4 ever so slightly thicker (~1-2mm) than your typical iPhone 4/4S battery case that uses just micro-USB. To some it’s an annoyance. Others, meanwhile, won’t notice it.

i4 Dock

We mentioned differentiation above and how battery cases are becoming a dime a dozen. While iPhone battery case manufacturers haven’t gotten too crazy yet with experimenting with different features, hardware designs, etc., i4 has found a way to make us raise an eyebrow – a stand alone dock. Most battery cases are very basic when it comes to charging — you use a micro-USB to plug it into a USB port or wall jack and away you go. The i4 in comparison can either charge by micro-USB or by way of the included dock. The dock, mind you, features the same matte black, soft touch coating that the case is covered in — very nice.

Besides the physical appearance, we have to comment on Spyder’s attention to small details, particularly the weight of the dock. At first, we saw the dock on the cover of the box and worried that it would simply be a cheap, plastic shell that weighed about as much as a feather. Thankfully, however, Spyder built a hearty dock. It’s not a gigantic paper weight, though it is definitely not going to fly around your desk or shuffle around.

Performance

Design and included perks/accessories are always nice. But the #1 purpose behind a battery case is to recharge your phone’s battery. So how does the i4 fare?

Wonderfully. The 2,000 mAh battery inside the i4 was able to get our phone right up to 95-100% almost every time, taking roughly two and a half hours. Longer stints of inactivity (on our part on the phone) saw enough power to take it to 100% plus another ~10%. Your mileage will vary, of course, if you are watching a movie/twittering away for hours on end while the case is charging your phone.

Changing pace and charging the case is a slightly longer affair of two and a half to three hours from dead to 5 full LEDs indicating a 100% charge.

Quite simply, you can bet on getting twice the battery life you do sans i4. For a lot of people, battery life isn’t a big deal as there are ample outlets/USB ports. For road warriors, however, this doubling of off-the-wall runtime is a lifesaver.

Buy or Pass?

Spyder has priced the i4 at $89.99. It’s not the cheapest battery case on the market and it’s certainly not the most expensive. We actually think it’s quite fair. For starters, the i4 comes with two removable top pieces (probably in case you lose one). It’s really not needed as the top piece is snug enough it’s not going to accidentally slide off, and there isn’t any reason to use the i4 without said piece installed. More importantly, however, the i4 comes with its own handy dock that makes charging your phone quick and easy without having to fumble with wires all the time. The dock alone could be a $20-$30 addition.

At the end of the day, the only negatives we can find with the i4 revolve around the headphone cutout that’s too small. We don’t consider thickness a “con”, really, as cramming a 2,000 mAh battery is going to understandably add some size and weight. Given that, we’d have to say the Spyder i4 is worth a serious look (we’d say put it at the top of your list) if iPhone battery cases are on your radar. It has one of the most capacious batteries on the market, includes its own dock, is contoured enough to hide some of its size and is priced decently. What’s not to like?

Sometimes we are wowed by what we see, and the rest are just another ugly stand that will clutter our desktops. But when a sexy little charging station comes around that catches my eye I get highly interested.

My desk (purchased from Ikea – yeah, I’m a hipster) is sleek and contains no bells and whistles, just pure simplistic beauty. Atop the desk lies a sexy 27″ iMac and an iPad. Other than my Magic Mouse and keyboard, there really isn’t much else to it. So when something comes a long that will add to my simplistic Apple-esque designed desk, I get all hot and bothered. And that is exactly what this LIL KIKR+ does. It adds a much nicer way to dock and charge your iPhone or iPod. Apple’s offerings are nothing to gawk after, so I am always in the market for something that will match my iMac and iPad.

Designed by Mike and Ellie Kemery who have designed for companies including Nike and T-Mobile, comes a limited edition ceramic white dock made of premium aircract grade aluminum material, lathered in a smooth matte white finish.

LIL KIKR+ is a versatile and portable dock that fits the latest generation iPod or iPhone with or without a case. Featuring non-slip rubber caps on the back and bottom of the dock, LIL KIKR+ is a strong and stable dock that prevents the iPhone or iPod from wobbling or sliding across a table. Additionally, LIL KIKR+ features a foam pad support back for maximum stability.

LIL KIKR+ is available for pre-order now at their Kickstarter.com page, for only $60. Along with the matte white finish, red, black or silver can also be made. This pretty little desktop accessory should be in customers’ hands by June 2012.

We recommend jumping over to that Kickstarter page now to contribute to a reasonably priced gorgeous iPhone charger!

Your iPhone/iPod/iPad is a great device for personal audio listening. Why, a good pair of headphones can make all the difference in the world, turning a seemingly drab song into a full-on concert in your head, where every nuance is heard. For sharing that audible bliss, all of the aforementioned devices have pretty terrible speakers. So terrible in fact, we’d recommend simply not using them. Solution: Get a dock.

Which dock? How about Sony’s RDP-X500ip dock for iOS (and older iPod) devices?

Features & Hardware

Tucked away inside the X500ip is a single 3-5/8 inches main woofer on the unit’s frontside along with two similarly sized passive radiator on the right and left sides of the units rear. The radiators are essentially speaker cones that aren’t wired up to anything. Instead, they act as amplifiers of sorts to boost volume of certain sound frequencies — in this case, bass.

Upper-mids and the higher frequencies are handled by a pair of 1-15/16 inch satellite speakers, also on the dock’s front, that for the most part do a decent job of reproducing relatively clean, diverse music.

As touched on above, Sony has created a free app in the App Store that allows you to configure the app’s main display (undocked) which features options for a timer, alarm, clock and time/alarm-based music playing schedules. While docked, the app provides additional utility by allowing you to choose from various preset EQs to adjust audio quality as needed.

The hardware itself has a few tricks up its sleeve, too. Take for example the damperless Magnetic Fluid that surrounds the speakers. Typically, speakers have a dampener which helps control sound pressure levels and try to prevent distortion caused by rouge audio frequencies. The X500ip’s magnetic fluid barrier is far and away a much better method (see audio quality below).

The dock that your iDevice sits in is actually a sliding draw that can be pushed back into the device when not in use. If you’ve ever knocked a dock off of a table because you clipped the actual dock tray jutting out from the unit, you’ll appreciate the hide-away feature.

Finally, no self-respecting audio dock can ship in 2012 without a remote control of some type. The X500ip’s isn’t anything special; is allows your normal set of controls for music playback and volume control. But leaving a remote out would be a far worse situation than simply have no remote at all.

Audio Quality

Good looks and a lengthy feature list are great and all, but when it comes down to something like an audio dock, it is the audio quality that matters above all else.

Firing up a vast range of music — everything from DMB, Metallic Man, In Flames, Florence + The Machine — rewarded us with countless hours of semi-enjoyment. In Metallic Man’s self-titled album, bass was strong and deep. Though, things got a bit weak (and rather abruptly we might add) in the ~30Hz-50Hz range. So if you’re looking for uber deep rumble, the X500ip isn’t quite there. However, we did find that after a few days of switching rooms and locations that the X500ip responds very well to being placed in a corner, amplifying bass from the back-firing subwoofer and dual passive radiators. At the same time, while bass response is improved depending on placement, the better the bass gets, the worse other mid- and higher-end frequencies become.

That said, the mid-range is warm, and at times too warm, allowing the upper ranges to be overshadowed. The high range is a bit dull to our ears. Various tracks by Muse, Florence + The Machine and DMB sounded as if they were missing certain pieces and sometimes entire sections simply because we couldn’t hear them or they blended (too much so) into the background. Using the free iOS app available in the App Store (D-Sappli) complete with additional EQ presets helped to some degree. That said, it’s clear that bass was the primary focus with this dock. (The D-Sappli companion app also features a programmable alarm function and customizable UI for different alarms/now playing screens.)

One thing we must touch on is that while the overall ability of the X500ip dock to reproduce the full range of our music was rather average, the volume level and lack of distortion near (and at) max volume is truly impressive. Miniature sound systems, whether they are shelf systems or audio player docks, have always had so-so audio quality that worsens as you approach the volume dial’s limits. The X500ip on the other hand, will gladly crank to max volume with extremely little to no discernible distortion — very impressive. The only downside to maxing out the volume is that bass performance drops off a cliff.

Conclusion

At $299, the X500ip dock by Sony is pretty much smack dab in the middle of the road. It’s not overly expensive, though at the same time not a simple “meh, let’s get it” price. While it’s sonic characteristics can be a bit bland, the amount of bass in particular that it pumps out as well as the distortion-free playback is something we find highly enticing. We only with the rest of the frequency range were attended to as well.

Because the $299 price point is extremely competitive, we’re easily swayed by other options. Quite honestly, the RDP-X500ip is for you only if you prefer bass over true sound signatures and need something that can be cranked to 11 and still keep distortion at bay. Otherwise, there are better docks there.

With a price for the phone itself rumored around $150 and now the dock — Arguably the coolest accessory for the device as it basically turns it into a laptop! — seen here at only $60 means your $200 is going to go very, very far with the Atrix. Initially, we thought that Motorola and 3rd party accessories would price the Atrix out of the realm of possibility for a fair portion of interested consumers. But as we’ve been seeing over the last couple of weeks, our initial beliefs are (thankfully) being proved wrong. Consider us more excited than ever. Looks like we’ll have to wait until the rumored February 11th launch date to see just how wallet friendly this little gem is going to be.

Hands down the coolest Android device of 2011 is the Motorola Atrix. With the bleeding edge hardware and unique docking station that turns the phone into its own laptop, the certification above is certainly cause for celebration. Because once we start seeing the FCC’s paper trail blessing, public release can’t be too far behind. As awesome as the Atrix is, does anyone out there have a phone they’re even more excited for? It’s ok to put the Atrix down a few spots from #1, we won’t judge you.

Ah, electricity. The life blood that keeps us electronic-toting, gadget-loving nerds alive. Well, ok. Actual blood keeps us alive if you want to get all technical. But for all intents and purposes, it’s electricity that keeps us moving. But unlike our gadgets when we venture too far from a power outlet, we manage to keep going…and going. Our unlucky gadgets on the other hand don’t fare so well — the permanent standby claims them. Of course, a fresh outlet and 1-2 hours later is all that’s needed to resurrect those beloved electron-loving devices we cherish so much.

But if you’re like me, you don’t have one or even two gadget mouths to worry about. Noooo sir (or mam). You’ve got 7, 8, 10, or more gadgets all clamoring for digital juice. Most of us don’t have six outlets by our end table. Power strips work wonders but lead to wires all over the place. The next best solution is a multi-device docking/charging station. And today, that’s exactly what we’re taking a look at — the iDapt Mobile Device Charging Station.

The basic principal employed with he iDapt is modular design. Two birds are killed with one stone — (1) You don’t have to have wires dangling all of the place as you would with a simple power strip and multiple device adapters and (2) you don’t have to worry about buying a device with a built-in set of plugs. The latter point is important, because if the plugs are built in, you’re rather limited upgrade wise later on down the road when you get new gadgets that sadly come with their own proprietary plug. Since the iDapt is modular, you just pop out the little adapter and plug another one in that corresponds to your device.

While we’re on the topic of those little adapters, we should mention what one could typically expect in the box: miniUSB, microUSB, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, iPod/iPhone, Nokia. (I say “typically” because at check-out you can create a custom box of 4 tips or choose the 6-tip box like I am reviewing here.) Despite the specific brands such as “Apple, Samsung, and Sony”, the inclusion of mini and micro USB adapters means a slew of other devices can hook up to the iDapt i4. So really, the usefulness is much higher than it initially appears.

Those with an eye for good design can take comfort in knowing that for a simple black box that pumps electrons into other black boxes, it’s rather pleasing on the eyes. It’s smooth and slick — like a black jewel. It’s also sturdy. So even loaded up with three top-heavy devices, the iDapt i4 holds it’s ground.

One other thing concerning design — the iDapt i4 comes in multiple colors. At check-out, you’re given the choice of: light blue, light green, black matte, metallic blue, orange, hot pink, red, silver, and white. Everyone’s boat should be floating…

Should you pick up and iDapt charging station? It’s pretty easy to work through the logical questions that would lead to a purchase. Do you have multiple gadgets? Do you like a neat and tidy table/charging area? If you answered yes to either one of those, you qualify for the “buy” category. Now all you have to decide is 4 or 6 tips? Either way, it’ll cost you the same $59.99.

What do you think?

The tinkers in the crowd will of course disagree, as iOS 4 still doesn’t allow for much of any customization — simply changing wallpapers isn’t enough. For that, jailbreaking is still the way to go. One nifty little plugin you can now add to your jailbroken beauty is “Multitasking Time”. It’s a simple mobile substrate plugin that does nothing more than add the current time and battery meter to the multitasking tray when the home button is double pressed. It’s nothing huge. Though I’m sure plenty of people will find it’s simplicity a welcome addition.

You can find “Multitasking Time” through ModMyi’s Cydia repo.
If you like long running Macs or iDevices thanks to HyperMac’s excellent 3rd party external batteries, you better order one up while you can. Looks like their claims of “using actual Magsafe and dock connector parts from Apple” are coming back to bite them. As it turns out, Apple is non too pleased with HyperMac repackaging their proprietary parts — so the legal hounds must be unleashed. That’s a problem because HyperMac does make some awesome products that no one else (including Apple) does. It would surely be a shame to see them sued out of existance. Hopefully Cupertino and HyperMac can come to some kind of agreement/settlement and keep all parties happy.

The lawsuit as posted by AppleInsider:

“Defendants manufacture, distribute, and/or sell products that infringe patents related to Apple’s proprietary MagSafe connectors used to connect power adapters and other products to Apple portable computers, such as the MacBook,” the suit reads. “Defendants also manufacture, distribute and/or sell products that infringe patents related to Apple’s 30-pin connectors and receptacles , used to connect cables to Apple iPod, iPhone and/or iPad products.”

“Defendants’ infringing conduct has damaged Apple and inflicted irreparable harm for which Apple seeks, among other remedies, an award of its actual damages, disgorgement of Defendants’ profits from the sale of infringing devices and injunctive relief.

How many are you going to order…?
There’s just so much junk out there. In order to keep your own product from not blending in, you have to be different. Is the Snowflake Speaker different enough?

Sadly, this is nothing more than a concept from the head of designer Sylvain Gerber. But if it were real, would you buy it? To my eyes, it looks like a Ferris Wheel at the fair. You?
Steering wheels and other handheld controller-cases of sorts are nifty, but this is so much better. On one hand, it’s a simple iPhone dock, charging your beloved gadget. On the other, it’s a not so covert gambling machine that will extract as much money as possible from your shallow pockets. Either way, it’s sweet. The hardware itself will set you back $39.99. Perhaps a bit steep for a simple phone accessory. However, the accompanying app that co-exists with the hardware is FREE! And from what I’ve seen, the app is fairly robust and full of hours upon hours of gaming entertainment. Just don’t blame me when you gamble away your 25th anniversary money with the apps online tourney mode.

“I wish there was something I could use that would charge everything I owned all at once!!”

Don’t fear extremely tech savvy older lady, iHome has got you covered!

Yes, you heard right, or if you can see, saw the picture, and you now know that iHome isn’t some white or black alarm clock radio thing that you can plop your iPhone/iPod into anymore. It is now the He-Man of bedside gizmos. If you have things that need to be charged, and are cussing the designer of your humble abode for not including more than only a few outlets, iHome punches him in the face and saves the day. The folks over at iHome understand you can’t be bothered with multiple cables, charging a different gadget in every room, they know you need every Apple product you can think of cluttered onto your nightstand, or next to your toilet.

iHome does a way with the need for multiple charging cables, and gives you the brand new iHome iB969, which gives you a docking station for your iPad, two slots for an iPhone and iPod, or two iPhones if you need them, plus a little rubberized rest area for a Kindle, or your Blackberry, or your wife’s toys(if they charge via USB). One of the iPhone/iPod even syncs with iTunes, which is done with a 36″ USB cable.

Charges iPad. Built-in stand included.
Dual universal docks: One to charge and sync to iTunes
Second dock for quick charge of iPhone/iPod
Charges (via USB port) iPad, Blackberry, and most eBook readers, including Sony Reader, Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, etc.
Expandable, rubberized rest area accommodates Blackberry, and most eBook reader

The item seems handy, if you wanted something that does what it does. It seems over kill to me, I mean, it is just a charging station. Why not add a clock to it, or I don’t know, maybe at least charge my electric car. What I am supposed to do with all the cables from these gadgets? Seems wasteful just to trash them, not too Green is it? This thing does a lot, but not enough for me to drop 120+ bucks on it. If it was free with my iPhone 4 bumper, possibly, but I don’t lose bars when charging so I don’t think Jobs will give me one. ;(

iHome

iPhone docks and cases are a dime a dozen. It takes an increasing amount of creativity and uniqueness to even get me to notice a “new” case/dock these days. The iRetrophone Dock is one such dock.

Hand-made out of resin and styled to look like an old relic communications device from the golden years, the iRetrophone Dock also provides some functionality to go with it’s (good?) ancient looks — docking and syncing. Sure, the features are bottom barrel basic. But in a design as trendy as this, does it matter?

The only sticking point I would have trouble getting over is the $195 price tag. I totally support local/hand-made goods and all. But $195 for a pretty simple iPhone dock?

If you’re lucky enough to have a g/f or wife who shares your incredible addiction to all things gadget, count your blessings. Really. A combination of female, gadget lover, and you lover is a rarity of epic proportions. So what exactly do you get the gadget girl of your dreams? A heart-shaped iPod dock of course.

Brought to you by Maxell, the Heart-shaped dock includes a built in speaker and is compatible with no tonly the traditional iPod, but the iPhone and iPod Touch as well. The final cherry on top is the bundled heart-shaped adapter that aids in landscape viewing. And if you’re not ready to puke yet — the packaging itself is full of pink hues and yes, more hearts.

And here’s where I break your heart. The Heart-Shaped iPod dock is a Japan-only exclusive for now. Pricing is non-existent as is any mention of availability outside of Japan. If this is on your list of potential Valentines Day gifts, you best get a move on making some Japanese friends fast.
