House of Marley Debuts Eco-Consious “Marley” Audio Headphones and Docks. #ces2011

  • January 4, 2011 10:41 pm

House of Marley unveiled a slew of audio-related products at Tuesday nights CES: Unveiled. Spanning everything from full-size headphones to earbuds to iPhone docks. Besides the obvious ties to infamous musician Bob Marley, the MARLEY line of audio products are all designed and manufactured using as much recycled and eco-friendly material as possible. The three lines — Jammin’, Freedom, and Destiny — follow a “Good, Better Best” marketing scheme and escalate in price accordingly ($99-$499).

Backing up the earth-happy features is handled by a claimed “pure” and “true” sound. I played around with the full line up tonight at CES and must say, they do sound quite nice. Though a more thorough review will have to wait until closer to the estimated ship date of Q2 2011. With that said, hop inside for the press release and a boat load of images to chew on…

Shure debuts new SE315 earphones.

  • September 16, 2010 8:07 am

While I may describe myself as borderline audiophile, I sadly must admit that I don’t have anywhere near the monetary background to sustain such a lifestyle. For that reason, $500+ earphones like the Shure SE535 aren’t in my budget. Thankfully Shure has a little something for everyone. Today, Shure took the wraps off of their “low end” SE-model earphones, the SE315. Now, don’t let the “low end” verbiage scare you away as they’re anything but. I’ve had a few Shure earphones over the years that were relegated to the cheap seats. But let me tell you, they were pretty awesome.

With that said, how awesome are the SE315′s. Their single-driver design will win some over while turning others away. Generally, the single-armature designs have a more “life-like” or “pure” sound about them, though never really excelling at any one aspect of music. That’s where multi-armature designs come in. But in reality, one could argue that opinions or statements about earphones/headphones and sound quality are purely subjective. But that’s enough riff raff. The specs…

  • Sensitivity: 116 dB SPL/mW
  • Impedance: 27
  • Noise Attentuation: 37dB
  • Freq. Response: 22Hz – 18.5kHz
  • Cable Length: 64” Detachable (at ear) with wireform fit

For $199, they’re not too bad. Any audio no0bs or audiophiles care to weigh in?

Keychain Speaker ensures everyone gets a slice of sonic heaven

Earbuds are usually worn inside of your ear as to keep sound leakage to a minimum both saving your hearing and keeping the people around you a bit more jolly. Walking around the streets in life, as it happens quite often, one may be with a group of friends and want to share a song with them. This casual affair usually involves passing an earbud around to a bunch of people which can be a big pain. Besides, do you really know who you’re swapping ear wax with? A far more elegant though probably just as terrible sounding option can now be found in the Keychain Speaker. This device is exactly what it sounds like, an earbud look-a-like speaker attached to a keychain for quick and easy use. Simply pop it into the headphone port of your choice and rock out with your friends. The absolute best part is the price — $11 out the door. Don’t forget one for me…

Grado comes inside with the GR8

  • August 31, 2009 7:35 am

grado-gr8
To any new or seasoned audiophile, the name Grado is more than likely a familiar friend. Highly regarded for their pure, open, and airy reproduction of music means many have made the higher end headsets their own. In the age of mobility and always on the go lifestyles, ear buds have caught on. Many high end manufacturers such as Ultimate Ears, Shure, Sennheiser, as well as many others can now look forward to a new competitor in the marketplace: Grado. While Grado has neglected this particular niche of the market, they are finally answering many individuals’ pleas and coming out swinging with the GR8.

As far as looks go, you won’t be impressed nor will you gush over any chique design elements. But these are headphones people. Headphones should have only one priority — sounding as best as possible for the money. The single armature Grados aim to please with features such as 20Hz-20,000Hz frequency response, 118db/1mw sensitivity, 120ohm impedance, 20mW power output, and 51″ long cable. Several different sizes and styles of ear tips are of couse included ensuring you get the best possible seal. Is the $300 asking price worth it?

TruTune buds bring out the color, befriend iPod Nano 4G

  • May 15, 2009 8:36 am

The iPhone 4G Nano was released in a multitude of different colors as to let people express themselves through their gadget favorite gadget. While it isn’t entirely new for Apple to release a product in a rainbow of colors, it is rather uncommon in the gadget world as a whole. Usually manufacturers will go with only a few colors in order to keep manufacturing costs down. Some popular colors of this lesser choice model include black, silver, and black. Radius Products’ “TruTune” earbuds look to break the mold and buddy up with Apple’s latest iPod Nano by coming in 9 matching colors. Radius claims the utmost sound quality and style. Given the fact that they’re only $19.99 I would question the quality claim as earbuds that low in price simply don’t have the goods to bring the sound. However, style wise they don’t look half bad at all. In fact they are rather attractive for a pair of earphones. Users who like randomness could even have a mix and match color scheme between their iPod Nano and TruTune headphones. The sky is the limit. Almost. So if your ears aren’t quite golden in that you can’t notice the difference between a 128Kbps mp3 file compared to a lossless FLAC file and you long for style more over function, the TruTunes may be exactly what you’re looking for. Yay or nay?

AKG headphones coming to the U.S.

As I’ve said before I would consider myself seven and a half tenths of an audiophile.  Not 100% there, but close.  I’ve heard many headphones from Shure, Sennheiser, Ultimate Ears, and Westone.  One brand I have always been intrigued in but never had the opportunity to listen to is AKG.  They have won various awards, as well as been highly praised on audiophile forums such as Head Fi.   AKG however was only available online used as they didn’t ship to the U.S.  That has all changed.  Today at Macworld, AKG announced they are bringing not just one, two, or even 5 new models, try 12+!  The 12+ AKG models will come in many different styles including ear buds, in-canal phones, over ear headphones, and mini headphones.  All listeners from casual to audiophile are going to be taken care of.  Unfortunately we have to wait a little longer as AKG stated the release date won’t come until March.  Click through to see all the models coming to the U.S.
