Famed iPhone emulator dev “ZodTTD” bringing the goods to Android. Encore: N64 emulator to follow soon after.

  • June 4, 2010 8:23 pm

While ROMS are totally illegal and I’ve never ever used one…I can see the reason such functionality would be wanted on your Android devices. Famed iPhone hacker, ZodTTD, ended up giving in to a 2,000+ strong petition asking him to bring his talents to the Android platform. Thankfully he obliged.

The PSX emulator he developed will require some beefy hardware (Nexus, overclocked Droid, EVO 4G, etc…) in order to keep everything nice and smooth. Something that kind of caught me off guard is that ZodTTD is saying that his PSX emulator runs faster on the Nexus One than iPhone. Obviously, the 1GHz processor probably has something to do with that. +1 pt. for Android. Interested users will want to make sure they have at least Android 2.1 as nothing lower will be supported. Sorry everyone else.

In other news, once ZodTTD is happy with the PSX emulator, he’s mentioned that he’ll start work on an N64 emulator as well. Can you say “hell yeah”! Hello GoldenEye 64 on my Droid…

There’s something about emulators that just have some mysterious aurora around them. On one hand, using them or the ROM’s that actually make them useful is often considered “illegal”. Of course, if the developers and publishers of the original titles would actually embrace the modern age, this would all be a moot issue. But alas, modern copyright/IP law has failed massively in keeping up with technology. But that’s a discussion for another day, for today we have something a little more relaxing to talk about…

BlackBerry Application Suite Pro leaked!

  • February 9, 2010 1:20 am

Why would you want to pick up a copy of and install BlackBerry Application Suite on your Windows Mobile device? Well, if you wanted to give RIM’s BlackBerry OS a try without jumping fully on board, this would be a way to do so. It’s been quite awhile since the Application Suite was shown off on camera — many months to be exact. At that time, RIM themselves mentioned that both BES and BIS versions were coming. See as how this leak is an unofficial release, the lack of a “complete” package isn’t too surprising.

If you’re feeling lucky, head on over to xda-forums to score yourself a copy of the Application Suite.

As you wait to for page to load, there’s a few things you should know. Namely, this leaked version is the BES version meaning you’ll have to have access to a BES server or else it won’t work. Period. Second, the OS that you’re emulating is of the 4.5 era (according to BerryReivew) — hardly new or exciting anymore. While I don’t necessarily discredit BerryReview’s claims, if the image displayed on the image above — which was pulled from BerryReview — is the ApplicationSuite, it looks more like 4.6+ to me as no 4.5 devices had the newer BB Precision theme. It could be a special skin for 4.5 and the Application Suite though. In the end, BlackBerries are BerryReview’s thing. So more likely than not I’m in the wrong. Anyone care to chime in and set me straight?

So far a few WinMo users have chimed in saying they got the App Suite up and running on a Windows Mobile 6.5.x ROM and all was well except not having access to a BES server. Even for users not on 6.5, you should be pretty well off regardless. Let us know how it goes.

Sit down iPhone. The best portable gaming platform ever: Nokia N900 + SNES Emulator + PS3 controller.

  • February 5, 2010 2:06 pm

Oh sweet mother of everything holy. If you thought the iPhone was where it’s at in regards to mobile gaming, you’ve got it all wrong. Take a look at the very standard N900 above with someone casually holding a PS3 controller above it. The pose isn’t coincidence. That controller is actually best friends with that little slab of plastic and glass below.

Some super genius geeks with more time and know-how than myself managed to take the N900/SNES Emulator trinket we saw a few weeks back and kick it up several notches by getting a PS3 controller to pair with the phone, giving the few who have access to this phone, completely unbound and unlimited mobile gaming abilities.

In the spirit of geekery and the betterment of the human race, the instructions on how to tackle the feats seen in the movie below can be found right over here. But before you jump over there, be sure to give the video below a watch.

Official, legal emulator heading to iPhone. Tip your hats to SEGA.

  • January 22, 2010 4:09 pm

SEGA!

That iconic SEGA voice of the early 90′s still rings lound and clear in my head. It seems as if just yesterday I was crowded in a corner of my room on the floor playing Sonic on my SEGA Genesis. *dreaming* Oh those were the days.

I’ve come a long way in only a decade as has the consumer electronics/gaming industry. It’s funny to think back to when I was awestruck by a black box playing games on a big tube TV with graphics power measured by “bits” and animals/humans being represented as literal blocks. And now we have mobile platforms such as the iPhone completely re-writing the book on mobile gaming.

I won’t lie, I enjoy my fair share (read: gigs) of ROM’s on my jailbroken iPhone for it keeps me entertained and able to pass the low points of the day. For as long as I can remember, this little time waster of mine and many others has been looked down upon by the various entities and groups responsible for putting out each and every video game. They say I’m a thief, you’re a thief. But what they’re really saying is “we’re” too lazy or greedy to open up support for other devices — until now.

SEGA is finally, finally seeing the light as new reports detail an official SEGA emulator for the iPhone dubbed “Ultimate Genesis”. As one can guess, a good of popular SEGA games will eventually make their move to the small screen with some of the larger titles debuting first. And of course, now that we can do the whole in-app purchase tango, growing your library of golden relics will come easier than ever.

You know, I really wish they had this when I was a kid.

Look for Ultimate Genesis to drop in the App Store within a few weeks with ROM’s going for on average of $5 a piece. Oh yeah!

SNES Controller becomes self sufficient gaming platform…

  • December 22, 2009 10:25 am

ROM’s are a geeks best friend. Today apparently they seem to be a hot topic…

Ever want to carry a library of ROM’s in a convenient, stylish, and portable form factor that you can take with you from computer-to-computer? The SNES controller above had the guts removed and replaced with the contents of a flash drive as well as a USB hub. The results is a controller that houses all the ROM’s you could ever want combined with a single cable allowing you to hook up and play said ROM’s on any computer. Now that is true plug-in-play support gaming on the go. This is of course a proof of concept in that you could make a similar device from any controller from any platform and inject your own ROM’s.

Consider me impressed. *…starts looking for old gaming controllers…*

Shocker: Nokia gets turtle shelled for showing off SNES emulator on N900. Bigger Shocker: Why hasn’t Nintendo monetized the ROM business?

  • December 1, 2009 10:00 am

super-mario

Perhaps it was a defiant “FU” to IP law. It could have been a simple mistake. Whatever it was, the showcasing of an SNES emulator and ROM running on the N900 belonging to Urho Konttori, Product Manager of Nokia, was begging for trouble from the start. And like clockwork, Nintendo has sent the legal hounds on Nokia to investigate how and why such thing happened. Nintendo voices the same opinion that many game developers and companies voice: that emulators and ROM’s are evil, sinister, things that kill the planet and ruin the ecosystem. They also go and throw in the word “torrent”, attaching the nomral stereotype that all torrents are illegal and bad which is simply not the case. Typical from those who simply don’t understand….but I digress.

While I can understand Nintendo cracking down on Nokia for a not so smart move, blatantly showing off something that is technically illegal all things considered, the bigger issue at hand should be clear: if Nintendo is unwilling or unable to pay/hire additional help to port games to other platforms, 3rd party channels need to be given the right to port without fear of prosecution. While the circumstances, products, and services vary from market to market, the same basic story is played out over and over again — failing to embrace what consumers want by remaining stagnant or trying to hold back innovation will only hurt yourselves in the long run. If they aren’t willing to move foward, get out of the way.

Emulators and ROM’s FTW!

N64 games soon coming to iPhone 3GS

  • November 3, 2009 9:55 am

nintendo-64-logoiPhone jailbreakers who enjoy some retro gaming on the go by way of NES, SNES, PSOne, etc. emulators have something else to look forward to. From the same developer who created the GBA4iPhone emulator, Zodttd, a new creation is coming on the near horizon. This one has me particularly interested for one reason: GoldenEye. If that didn’t trip your mental memory unit, I’ll just lay it out there — N64 emulation is coming so an iPhone 3GS near you…soon! Because of the inherent hardware requirements, only the iPhone 3GS will be able to make use of an N64 emulator and actually work smoothly. Even then, Zodttd states that the later, more graphically complex N64 games still need some work before working on the iPhone platform. Of course, that can also be looked at as the iPhone platform needs some more work before running said games. Either way, the thought of getting my secret agent GoldenEye fix on the go has me in all types of hysteria. So how exactly will the on screen controller mimic such a goofy-ass original controller? I have no idea but I’m sure eager to find out. We’ll just have to wait and see…

“Playstation emulator runs better on Palm Pre than iPhone 3GS”

  • July 1, 2009 7:24 am

palm-pre-playstation-emulation

While Apple my deny emulators from their iJesus, Palm has so far stayed relatively quiet on this front. Leave it to the faithful developer community to get the real job done right the first time. For those of you who have switched over to a Palm Pre and are aching for a Playstation emulator can take chill pill and relax. One is coming. Thanks fo ZodTTD, a seasoned iPhone emulator veteran, the Palm Pre can now enjoy the glories of Playstation emulation. He even goes as far to say that the Pre runs the PS1 emulator better than the iPhone 3GS. How that’s possible, I’m not sure. Maybe Palm is hiding something from us. Who knows. Before you go and toss your beloved Playstation in the trash you may want to know that:

* There is no sound output (but it’s emulated), as Pulse Audio is required for the Palm Pre, and I have yet to support it. It will come soon.
* I have not figured out hardware rotation or scaling, or whether it is possible. Until then I am using the raw framebuffer device and blitting 320×240 software scaled.
* I figured out how to read the keypad device on the Palm Pre, though there are times it fails to give a keyup event, making keys “stick”. This is annoying and I’m looking for a workaround.
* As things progress I will have fullscreen landscape working as well.

So there you thave it. Working, *almost* perfect Playstation emulation on the Palm Pre. I know you want to see more. So come on in and watch the video of the gaming goodness in action.
