Floppy disks are pretty useless these days unless of course you’re looking for a relic of a paper weight or holding on to them for future value. There is a third, much more useful option however. Replace the guts with a USB drive like this guy Charles did. It’s a tad thicker than a single floppy because he had to use two disks stacked together so it everything would fit. Though he managed to get the flash drive’s activity light to light up with the floppy’s old lock switch cutout. Pretty nifty.
Mere mortals who have to deal with large file transfers day in and day out often squander in the slow lane with some pitiful HDD external hard drive. Hell, even “fast” HDD’s are slow all things considered. Those who have pockets deeper than the Grand Canyon, however, can afford to splurge a bit. Case in point: The Iomega USB 3.0 SSD external hard drive.
For starters, it’s a tiny 1.8″ size, meaning ultra portable. +1. But the real butter of the story is the speed — a claimed 10x faster than a USB 2.0 7200RPM hard drive and a solid 2x faster than your newer 7200 RPM USB 3.0 drives. More usable fodder translates out to 191MB/s reads and 130MB/s writes. Toss in 256-bit encryption and you’ve got yourself a slammin’ little digitla box ‘o storage.
Look for the drives to drop in early November: 64GB: $229 | 128GB: $399 | 256GB: $749

As consumers tote around ever growing digital libraries, finding places to stuff said libraries is starting to wear thin. Ok, maybe it’s not that big of a crisis. But tech junkies and business professionals may have encountered at one time or another, a flash drive that had run out of room or was god-awfully slow. Thus far, there’s been a few USB 3 options that have come onto the market. Well folks, add another contender to your lists. Kingston has officially arrived.
The Data Traveler Ultimate 3.0 as the name suggests, adds in USB 3 support and promises some pretty substantial speed improvements over USB 2.0-only products. According to Kingston, their handy work present in the DTP 3.0 is good for 80MBps read and 60MBps writes. Blistering? Meh, for a flash drive it’s pretty awesome. Compared to higher end hard disk drives and SSD’s, however, shows that flash drives in particular have quite a ways to go.
You can pick up the Data Traveler Ultimate 3.0 in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB sizes for $89/$138/$270 respectively. Anyone going to bite?
I don’t care who you are. This mad concoction of “adapters through the decades” is awesome. Whether or not it’s real of a Photoshop job remains to be seen. For the sake of all things holy however, I surely hope it’s real.

Think you can top that?
It seems that in todays world, everyone can have their own personalized flash drive. Whether it be in the shape of a stick, car, or decapitated teddy bear, flash drives literally come in every shape and size. And now, they come in the form of a poker chip. Gamblers make note, this is one chip you don’t want to throw away. Whataya say? $19 for 4GB worth? All you have to do is hit the link below…

Tired of glowing USB drives masked as farm animals and other obnoxious, random objects? Yeah, me too. But this concrete flash drive that displays it’s weight which also doubles as it’s storage, I’m totally diggin’. I know all of you out there probably have at least half a dozen flash drives. That may be true. But if you’ve got that many, what’s one more?
Too bad this is only a concept ’cause I would be all over these. Here’s to hoping — yet again — that some manufacturer picks up such a unique concept.
Last week we touched on some new and interesting news possibly coming from Seagate. And wouldn’t you know it, our guestimate was spot on (as was many other peoples’).
The new Seagate Momentus XT was put through it’s paces by Hothardware and found to be “in between a WD Scorpio Blue and Seagate Barracuda 7200.11″ in terms of overall speed. So no, this hybrid tech won’t be a worth contender to SSD”s and users looking for the ultimate in speed. For that, a blazing fast, wallet slaying SSD is still your best bet.
If it’s actual benchies you’re looking for, the average times for the Momentus XT Hyrbird are as follows: ~110MBps/~100MBps read/write. Not out of this world, but something to consider I guess when deciding between HDD or SSD, no?
For the rest, you’ll have to give Hothardware your eyes and attention a bit longer.

The NES was truly a staple of gaming back in the day. While other systems were languishing in averageness and confusion, the Nintendo console came along and caused an explosion in the gaming scene. But those days are long gone.
Thankfully, the memories and functionality of that old gaming great don’t have to be. The NES Controller Flash Drive is a perfect example of how the old can become new again…

Dog tags as a means of self identification for your four legged friend are sooooo 1890. Come on guys, let’s get with the program here. Shall we? The Pet ID Tag is the dog tag of the year 2010 and beyond. Essentially it’s just a rugged flash drive that can be affixed to your pooch’s collar giving whoever finds them in the unfortunate misplacing, a quick, clear, and easy way to get your lost mutt back to your happy, humble abode. It’s a great idea really. At only $14.99, it’s at least considerable as many custom dog tags cost as much or more. Personally, I’d rather have a geeked out dog tag than some stupid flower design with glitter. But that’s just me. Though no information regarding storage capacity is present, we have to ask: Does it really matter? I mean, a simple text file with your information doesn’t need that much space. Your dog certainly doesn’t need a 16GB dog collar flash drive does he?
If you really want to be a dork, you’ll get GPS installed on that furry animal of yours. Then you won’t even need a dog tag or to “search” when they wonder off. Simply track the signal. Though the above solution is a lot cheaper. Which are you leaning towards?
