Store the force in the palm of your hand with the Star Wars USB drives

star-wars-usb-storage-drive

I don’t know why there’s a sudden increase in Star Wars gadgets — first the Backlit Star Wars Coffee Table and now Star Wars USB flash drives — but Star Wars fans and closet nerds alike are probably hovering on the edge of their seats as we speak. We’ve seen Star Wars themed flash drives and gadgets many times before but these Star Wars flash drives are just plain cool if not rather similar to many other Star Wars drives on the market. As is customary for popular memorabilia from big name movies, prices slightly higher than your typical flash drive with prices starting at $29.99 for the 4GB model going all the way up to $59.99 for the 16GB variants. The various figures whom include: Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Storm Trooper and Yoda stand around 3″ high.

Small, pocketable storage for a rather reasonable cost all wrapped in a popular themed housing spells success. Pricing aside, these little drives aren’t too far off “normal” flash drive pricing. Besides, even the high end $59.99 doesn’t seem too bad relative to Star Wars souvenir pricing as I’ve seen more than my fare share of Star Wars memorabilia that cost more than my car…many times over. Feel like splurging?

Dual-Interface 64GB Kanguru Flash drive does the USB/eSATA tango

  • September 4, 2009 6:47 am

kanguru-dual
Do you have the need for speed? Do you need a flash drive that is small and offers up copious amounts of storage? If so, why not take a gander at Kanguru’s 64GB dual-interface flash drive. The nifty feature of this flash drive isn’t necessarily the size (as more 64GB flash drives are becoming commonplace) but the dual-interface design with a USB 2.0 and eSATA connection ensuring you have the fastest speeds wherever you decide to hook up. With USB 3.0 around the corner, sadly this drive will obsolete mighty quick. If you’re a Windows 2000+, Linux 2.4, or Mac OS 9+ user, you shouldn’t have a problem dealing with the Kanguru. While I am highly intrigued, a lack of price, release date, and a rather lack of knowledge on this particular brand means I’m a tad hesitant. Anyone care to chime in on previous Kanguru models?

Watch a USB Drive being born.

Technology such as flash drives, how they work, and an overall amazement at how storage technologies work day in and day out go unnoticed by most. They simply expect their little flash drives to work when the moment arises not giving a care in the world to how exactly such things are made. While the general public won’t care and again just want it to work, the geek in you craves for such knowledge and inside info. How exactly does a flash drive get born? How long does it take to make 1, 10, 100, 100,000? Such questions often fill my head as I think about the sheer number of flash drives that must pass through Best Buy any given year, then multiply that by the number of stores in the world that sell flash drives. Thinking about such large numbers can surely be daunting. It’s too early for daunting. So sit back, watch a movie, and usher in another fine morning.

Overpriced convenience: Kingston 256GB flash drive

  • July 28, 2009 5:56 am

kingston-256

Now I’m a big supporter of convenience and ease of use, however, there comes a time when even the most simple minded have to sit back and really question just how much all of that convenience is worth. Enter the world of 256GB Kingston flash drives. The latest from the King is sure to make the less technically knowledgeable individual gape in pure and utter astonishment by the sheer size and amount this miniature device can hold. While the size is massive, drives of this magnitude usually suffer horrendously slow transfer times — something that isn’t very appealing when you’re talking about 10 Mbps transfer speeds on a device capable of housing 1/4 TB. Moving on to a brighter light, the Kingston 256GB flash drive will allow the 1 and 0 hoarder to stow away more than 40,000 songs just to give you an idea. Naturally, such size and sophistication comes at a price…and hefty a price it is: $900 according to several tech sites more familiar with the device. $900 is mighty steep for a flash drive regardless of features or size.

So what is a mere mortal to do? Obviously buy a small hard drive is the first step. Again, remember that transfer times are key, don’t let the shock of the big storage number cloud your judgement. There are much cheaper alternatives that while not as small, are just as useful and efficient. Then again, if you’ve never had that good of a relationship with say one of your kidneys, now may be the time to kill two birds with one stone….

Slim Data: Credit card sized flash drive

  • May 12, 2009 4:42 am

slimdata1

If you are the type that either doesn’t wear pants with pockets or don’t have keys to attach a USB flash drive too, the Slim Data flash drive may be the device for you.  Instead of a more common boxier shape, the Slim Data relies on a “casing” that is roughly the same size and weight as a credit card.  Because of this, expect your wallet to being carrying another high value item with plenty of personal information on it.  While it makes it easier for thieves to steal your data as now more is contained in a smaller space, the odds of getting robbed are pretty slim (at least where I live).  If size really is a nagging issue, take comfort in knowing that it is barely perceptible measuring in at 3.4- x 2.1 x 0.11-inches.  For the more fashion forward techie, you have your choice of clear, gray, orange, red, or blue.  If you don’t like those colors I don’t know what to tell you…paint it or something.  As far as actual support goes, the Slim Data flash drives will come in 1-4GB capacities and work on Windows, Mac, and Linux starting at $27.99.  Is a credit card sized flash drive for you?  Or are you afraid you’re going to snap it by forgetting its in your wallet and sitting on it?  I would fall under the latter category unfortunately.

Virgin Mary USB drive: Keeping your data in the “cloud” *not really*

  • May 11, 2009 5:20 am

vm-usb
It seems that with every passing day, dear Virgin Mary seems to find refuge in another mundane physical object, somehow bringing with her or revealing a “miracle.” We often laugh as people will become so enamored with the Mary’s presence that they will turn the once normal object, such as a piece of pasta, into a new religious keep sake to be passed through the generations. Since this nonsense and Mary herself aren’t going away anytime soon, Louis Eslava has decided to design and manufacture a Virgin Mary USB drive that this time intentionally has the infamous virgin encased inside a clear plastic sarcophagus. A banner located within the holy flash drive conveniently says “Oh Maria, Keep our data safe”. I wonder if the pope will find these amusing or insulting? Heck, he may hand them out like candy to church, you never know. The final cherry on top for the Mary lovers comes by way of a real beating heart courtesy of a single red LED located deep within her chest. Contrary to popular belief, the LED is not for telling you when data is being read/written to the flash drive, but instead signifies Mary being alive and listening, keeping an ever watchful plastic eye on the situation (and your data). So, is the Virgin Mary flash drive worth 59.00 € ($80) to you? I for sure can easily and swiftly say “No.” Besides being just plain weird, $80 for a flash drive that more than likely will come in measly 2GB and 4GB (6GB if we’re blessed) capacities just doesn’t make much sense. But then again, maybe Mary talks to you differently. If you’re in the market for a supernatural flash experience, hit up Shop.Strato.de and be ready to give your offering.

If you are thinking to yourself the “race” to create the most absurd and “out there” USB drive is anywhere close to nearing an end, you my friend would be dead wrong.  Why would someone want to carry around a lifeless, unoriginal, and downright guaranteed to lose typical flash drive when you could instead be toting around the USB Rubber Chicken?  Said drive will surely set you apart from the crowd (literally) as you will have to take up two seats at the table to accommodate the massive sprawl of the Chicken’s sheer size.  If Chickens, flash drives, and a tad bit ‘o humor is your cup of tea, the USB Rubber Chicken might be right up your alley!
