HTC Incredible freed from the shackles of VZW hell.

  • June 10, 2010 9:00 am

The Evo 4G and Moto DROID may be the two limelight thieves as far as rooting is concerned, but fret not Android junkie, there’s plenty of other fish in the sea. Why, they Droid Incredible is just as good as the other two mentioned above, if not better in many instances. And today is the Incredible’s day to shine as the talented folks of “Unrevoked” have managed to slip past the Incredible’s defenses and finally root the device.

Word to the wise: The Incredible root process is a fair bit more complicated than the Evo 4G’s or just about any other current Android handset on the market. It involves many different steps and several extra files as well as some command line know-how to finish the dirty deed. You’ve been warned!

If that doesn’t phase you in the slightest or you just have a penchant for living life on the edge, proceed on over to the how-to guide compliments of Unrevoked. Let us know how it goes.

Spirit Jailbreak released! Untethered goodness now liberating an iDevice near you…

  • May 2, 2010 10:07 pm

“Fight the good fight.” “Stick it to the man.” Two very common phrases heard when describing someone feeling as if they’re being suppressed by a higher power/organization. To some, Apple is that organization, yet they can’t escape some of the awesome gadgets that they churn out. Solution: Jailbreak that shit! Apple may want to lock you down into their little world, but we the people have ulterior motives…

Dev-Team releases Pwnage Tool 3.1.5 for Mac to the world.

  • February 8, 2010 8:07 am

And the Cat&Mouse chase continues. This time it is the Dev-Team volleying their latest Pwnage Tool 3.1.5 Mac edition jailbreaking tool which is meant to unshackle your iDeviecs from the latest 3.1.3 OS release. Some may be dancing in the streets, downloading the update as we speak, but there are some hurdles and things you need to know first.

  • iPod Touch: The 1st and 2nd Gen iPod Touches are the only Touches compatible with PwnageTool 3.1.5. A special note to 2nd Gen iPod Touch owners: make sure your device has an early bootrom. If not, you need to avoid the 3.1.3 update from Apple at this time.
  • iPhone: For iPhone users, the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS (with an early bootrom) can also partake of the jailbreaking goods. Again, DO NOT upgrade to 3.1.3.

Of course, if you really want to play it safe, just avoid 3.1.3 all together. It’s not like there’s anything of any real value included in the new release anyway. You’ve been warned…

China single handedly trying to destroy the internet: Removing individual citizens from owning/registering domain names.

  • December 16, 2009 3:20 pm

chinese-firewall

Once again the argument and ideology of “saving the kiddies” from harmful pornographic material and all kinds of icky human parts is ruining a grand part of the internet — individually owned websites/domain names. Before we go any further, it’s worth noting that this crackdown is a China only crackdown. Whew!

A statement made by The China Internet Network Information Centre, starting this week only businesses, businessmen, and organizations will be able to register and own personal domain names. Even then, several hoops will have to be navigated and jumped through. New registrants will need to have written applications, copies of various licenses, and/or other certificates — for a goddamn domain name.

Those Chinese whom already own and run their own websites and own said domains may not be not be out of the woods. According to various site owners located abroad in Jiangsu, Shanghai, Henan, Zhejiang and Jiangxi no “grandfather rule” is being applied. That simply means that if current site owners with private domains could find their site dead, gone, and digital buried. A sad realization for the countless numbers of private site owners who have no doubt invested copious amounts of blood, sweat, and tears in their websites.

As mentioned above, the China Internet Network Information Centre is using the excuse reasoning that too much porn has popped up on private sites. Logical solution: erase them from existence. Great idea.

If you ever needed a reason not to move to/start a Chinese native website, this would illustrate a perfectly logical reason not to do so. As hard as I may try to keep personal politics out of this, I can’t help but feel sadness for the countess Chinese site owners — especially the nerdy ones — who have spent so much time on their websites, some spending many years, to now have it all hanging by a thread. Not to mention I can’t even begin fathom how any single one of the idiots who hold a seat in the Chinese government can even begin to think this is a reasonable or perfectly logical solution.

I’m sure there’s plenty of opinions out there. Let’s hear ‘em.

Iranian government tries to silence the sound of freedom and opposition by closing the internet.

  • December 5, 2009 5:41 pm

iranian-greenThose silly Iranian government employees. They think closing off internet access in the country because of citizen protests concerning the rigged election and “re-election” of president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as well as remembrance of December 6, 1953 — the killing of three of University of Tehran students by Iranian police — will stop the truth from leaking out to the rest of the civilized world. They can silence the people within their own country, blackout Twitter and Facebook access, and overall bring internet access in the country to a crashing halt, but they can’t stop the rest of the world from spreading the word.

What’s interesting is that back in the 50′s, stopping the flow of information was much easier. With the main communication being paper or voice based, it wasn’t too hard to silence opposition. Now that something so simple as clicking the “send” button can instantly share the truth with millions of people is truly a monumental thing to grasp. The internet for better or worse has evolved into a lifeline for many around the world. A place to communicate, entertain, and inspire.

The Iranian government’s crackdown may leave them feeling like they are in control, that they can continue their oppressive politics and archaic ways. Little do they know that they are not in control. They are a dying breed. The internet and the voice of the people punished for voicing their opinions and feelings will spread the truth louder than any government crackdown can silence, faster than any bullet can travel and further than any decree can clame rule.

Go ahead and Protest. Give them hell.

Dev-Team steps forward to save the day again…for OS X users.

  • October 13, 2009 11:33 am

Those of you holding off for an official Dev-Team jailbreak solution to the recently released 3.1.2 firmware pushed out by Apple have something exciting to come home to. PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X has officially been released bringing with it freedom for most. I say most because 3G iPod Touches aren’t supported. It’s also important to note that in order to keep your phone unlocked, you’ll need to upgrade to 3.1.2 via custom built ISPW’s via PwnageTool as fresh 3.1.2 devices have an updated baseband that at this point isn’t able to be downgraded. Finally, the iPod Touch 2nd Gen must already be jailbroken in order to stay jailbroken on 3.1.2 and using PwnageTool. The Dev-Team does mention however if enough demand is seen, they’ll make the process easier for 2nd Gen touch owners as well. Why they didn’t from the get go is beyond me. Hey, I’m not a software developer/code magician so I’ll respect their decisions.

Per Dev-Team:

This release allows your baseband to remain unlocked at 3.1.2, but it does not unlock a new baseband put there by restoring to official 3.1.x. It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband.

If you’re looking for something a bit more Windows based, revert back to Blackra1n for now.

What the iPhone could be…(or already is if you use Cydia)

iphone-home-concept

I’ll make it short and sweet. The sooner Apple drops this control nonsense the better off we’ll all be. Visual example: The person(s) responsible for this homescreen, Teehan+Lax, dream of a day when they can release such a beaut to the iPhone world. Uhhh….such a store front is already available…it’s called Cydia. While some won’t for whatever reason take advantage of the unrestricted world that jailbreaking allows, others don’t sit idle and wait for permission to control their own devices. Even though there are several homescreen mods on Cydia already, this particular one by Teehan+Lax is quite the looker. So how about it Apple. Done being assholes yet?

Whitoken iPod Touch theme. Best ever?

  • August 21, 2009 6:17 am

As if we needed another reason to jailbreak…if you were on the fence as to whether to jailbreak your iPod Touch or not, the Whitoken theme could quite possibly drop kick you off of your perch atop the digital fence of uncertainty. Featuring what is (to me) by far the best layout and color choices for a theme to date easily convinced me to re-jailbreak my iPod and start rockin’ this theme. Whitoken hasn’t been officially released yet and you’ll also notice I only mention the iPod Touch as an iPhone version hasn’t been announced yet. Hopefully with greater showcasing, the creator or someone willing to take the time will create an iPhone version. I really can’t get over how awesome this theme looks. Agree?

SIM Reader/Creator kit gives power to the people

  • July 10, 2009 6:18 am

Getting locked into some greedy wireless carrier with shoddy service and even shoddier CS is never a fun way to spend 2-3 years of your life. It’s basically like another form of prison. So what is the tech inclined individual such as yourself supposed to do? Once again, taking matters into your own hands is the best answer. Just how do you accomplish said task? Simple, with a nifty comic book titled: “Citizen Engineer: SIM Card Hacking” published by Adafruit Industries. Said book comes with the instructions needed to get the knowledge needed to by pass and hack SIM cards as well as how to make your own. Sweet! What’s even better is if you go ahead and get the $35 option, Adafruit will even throw in a premade SIM reader kit. If you’ve been looking to get into the underground world of SIM hacking/creation, now is a better time more than ever. Happy Hacking!
