Study says: Bloggers make good neighbors.

  • November 11, 2009 1:58 pm

home-improvementI like many of you reading these words are geeks. More specifically a tech/geek blogger. How geeky we are varies from person to person. But me, given the chance, (and a nice new Core i7 27″ iMac) I’d live in front of my computer. It’s not hard really. The sun is the same as it was thousands of years ago and will continue to be. If I really wanted some fresh air I can always open a window. Taking it to the nth degree, I could always rip up the hardwood in my house and put down some sod to give it that eco/green feel. In all honesty, I get out quite a bit. But the point is, tech bloggers such as myself often get stereotyped as lazy, house dwelling folks who really don’t know what the outside looks like, how to swing a bat etc. Would you believe that we bloggers are actually pretty darn good neighbors? So says a new study by Pew Internet Project.

It turns out that bloggers, if “good”, are actually more chipper than there less talkative counterparts. On one hand this seems startling given how much time we stare at pixels on a screen. On the other, you have to like hearing yourself talk (and think) if you’re to be a blogger — it comes with the job. If you can talk to yourself for ours and provoke deep thoughts and good ‘ol conversation, chances are you could be a pretty decent blogger…

Since I’m on a mod kick this morning, why not move on from the mobile geek cave to something that is a little smaller a heck of a lot more affordable. Gaming console mods are nothing new. We have seen dozens pass through here at GS. Perhaps the most unique and well put together example of console modding to come through in some time the Halo Xbox 360 mod. The name is self explanatory. This 360 mod features a panoramic-like scene on the top of the 360 that is beautifully detailed. It doesn’t just rest on top however as the earthy feel wraps around the entire unit. When a geek with artistic and creative ability really puts their mind into their work, truly awesome creations come forth. If only the creator were taking orders….

Microsoft going for the kill: Poaching Apple Store employees with $$.

the-kill

Work at an Apple Store and feeling a little gipped when wages are concerned? Looking for something new and completely different from your current occupation? It seems Redmond is doing a bit of poaching from deep within Apple these days as Apple Store managers are reporting that they are being contacted by Microsoft personal brandishing promises of greatly increased wages as well as a lucky few even getting lavish gifts such as paid moving expenses. Microsoft appears to be really trying hard on this whole retail front, but are clever signage, store layout, and poached Apple employees really going to make Microsoft stores more hip? Personally I doubt it will do much to improve the “coolness” factor. Instead, I see Microsoft stores being more geeky stores full of…well…geeks with Apple continuing to attract the hipster crowd. However, the added knowledge and consumer based know-how Apple employees bring certainly can’t hurt right?

lots-o-gadgets

Every geek big or small, young or not so young may use the back-to-school season as an excuse/reason to splurge on that new gadget they’ve been waiting on or holding out for. Even if you’re not a student, there are often some great deals to be had as companies and manufacturers far and wide want to cash in on the spending spree that takes place every year ’round the time the bell’s start to ring. Since we live in the digital age, it seems fitting that as we move towards more and mroe digital devices, a gadget back to school list be created. Time magazine has done just that, though, some of the options are rather pricey meaning only those with hard to find money trees will complete the list.
