While many of the so called “hardcore” classic gamers already have gigabytes upon gigabytes of old ROMs, a few of you out there may want to stay more on the legal side of things. Today, Steam is making that a great deal easier with 11 new classic Sega Genesis games ripe for the pickin’. The best part is that they’re only $2.99.

Call me a child, a nerd, a dork — whatever. Sonic the Hedgehog is the sh*t! Back in the SEGA Genesis hayday, this little blue creature kept me occupied for hours on end many a weekend. No joke. So when word spread of a new, revamped Sonic, I was beyond ecstatic.
The new Sonic the Hedgehog while still a 2D scroller (nice retro touch) is still a sight for sore eyes, with a much more polished UI and fluid gameplay. Starting this summer, the little blue hedgehog will be fully available to the masses on WiiWare, PSN, XBL, and some “mystery platform”. (SEGA getting a second wind…?!) But, starting now, any hyped up nerds (such as myself) can get in on the action early and download the music from Act 1: Splash Hill. Excited yet?

If you’re looking at the image above wondering if it’s plausible….or even fully working, I can honestly say yes, yes it is. The photo above shows the end result of an old Sega Genesis tear down by Wired’s Charlie Sorrel. According to Charlie, their was plenty of room to jam some small speakers inside and make this Japanese Genesis belt out tunes in line with some of the greater iPod docks. But in the end he choose to keep things nice and simple. Hey, I’m simply amazed in wonderment at the sheer geekery of everything before my eyes. This and a whole lot more can be seen back in Chris’s original post over at Wired. I don’t know about you, but every time I come across old antique gaming junk in the basement I’m going to try and think of all kinds of ways to give it a fresh albeit Frankenstein-ish take on life.
