  • The green cubicle starts here? CubeTubes.

    Posted February 19th, 2010 at 10:50 am
It isn't too often we see a corporate minded gadget get us all hot and bothered. I mean, the differences between the corporate world of gadgets and the consumer world of gadgets are like comparing the a horse and buggy to flying cars. But every once in a while, a gem makes it's way past our visual receptacles and excites us. In this case, it's the CubeTube. Everyone knows what a solar panel is and what it's main function in life is -- to recycle solar particles into usable energy for whate...
  • The Leech Plug: The self conscious, tree hugging wall plug.
    by Mike
    Posted February 17th, 2010 at 2:49 pm
Unbeknownst to many, even if an electronic is fully charged, it will still draw power from the wall. Now it may not seem like much. And in reality, it isn't -- for a single gadget in a single day. But then take into account how many gadgets there are sitting fully charged in wall outlets across the world. It adds up. What if there were a "smart" plug that would detect a charged battery and released said battery accordingly? Welcome to the Leech Plug. Designed by RSID student Conor Klein...
  • Norway to be the home of new, giant slaying wind turbine.
    by Dirk
    Posted February 16th, 2010 at 7:23 pm
When it comes to wind power, bigger is always better. A few design tweaks here and there can be made to the individual blades to increase the efficiency of said blade, however, at the end of the day, the blade with the most square footage wins. It looks as if Norway is taking that thinking and multiplying it -- exponentially -- with their new, currently in construction, wind turbine gigantor. When this modern behemoth is finished, the rotors will span over 473ft, it's will tower over 533 ...
  • Kia introduces the Ray: Solar power, 202 MPG, and a sweet futuristic look.

I love gadgets. Check, we know that. Chocolate. Yup, we've gone over that too. But cars? Ya, I Iike cars too -- futuristic, gadget/electronic filled cars. Out of all the car manufacturers you would expect to hear unveiling a super teched out car, Kia has this time stolen my attention with the Ray. The Ray screams futuristic. Just look at it. The Ray isn't all looks however. Atop it's 173" long body sit two very large pieces of glass coated in photovoltaic cells. Initially, these larg...
  • Best Buy puts it’s “e-cycle” e-waste billboard where it’s mouth is…or something like that.
    by Mike
    Posted February 9th, 2010 at 5:22 am
Looking for the latest display of electronics companies supporting more green and earth friendly practices? For such a display, one only has to look at a new ad that has cropped up in Times Square in New York City. Non other than Best Buy has erected an e-waste recycling ad that is actually constructed of "e-cycled" electronics as they put it. I'm not a huge tree hugger by any means, but I can certainly appreciate and support not being overly wasteful. Slapping a huge ad in Times Square pr...
  • Wind Power for the nature junkie: Eolic Foldable WindPower Generator.
    by Mike
    Posted January 20th, 2010 at 1:22 pm
What the hell is that? At first, visions of some new age weapon come to mind. But in reality it's something much more and much more useful -- a mobile solar power generator. Being green and living clean is getting easier with each passing day. Regardless if the current world we live in is warming or cooling, giving mother nature a helping hand certainly can't hurt. In the solar power arena, harnessing such power for larger scale applications (read: large tools/small housing) require some ...
  • Electric “mini-world” getting the full rundown in Quebec — undertaking largest electric vehicle experiment in the countries history.
    by Mike
    Posted January 15th, 2010 at 9:05 am
Like a scene out of a sci-fi novel, Quebec, Canada will be undertaking one of, if not the largest scale electric car tests ever. There have been plenty of stories of a group of people, school, organization, etc. banding together in the name of science and testing out alternatively fueled cars. However, this little shindig up north is that and then some. You see, two big players are starting this eco-friendly party -- Quebec's power utility company and Mitsubishi Motors. The two of them hav...
  • Visiting Times Square for New Years? Why not self handedly power that dropping ball?
    by Mike
    Posted December 30th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
As much as I'd love to, I simply won't be in Times Square for the big ball drop into 2010. But just because I'm not there doesn't mean I'm missing out. Some would argue that staying home (or at least indoors) is a much better experience as you get the benefit of countless camera angles, more coverage of the event, and of course a surrounding air temperature above freezing. The latter of which is a big one for me seeing as how I hate the cold. Since most party goers will start arriving late...
  • Volkswagen L1 concept makes Chevy Volt look like a Hummer in a corset.

Fuel efficiency. Miles per gallon. Fuel Range. Big things to consider when purchasing a car these days as gas prices are still higher than they should be coupled with the onslaught of story after story of dwindling crude oil supplies. The U.S. auto industry has failed for the most part to innovate in a "green" direction until very recently. Their fascination with big, gas guzzling vehicles has caused them to be in a desperate position of playing catch up with the rest of the world. *Help...
  • Water powered calculator kicks batteries to the curb. Trees respond in grand smile.
    by Mike
    Posted August 10th, 2009 at 11:17 am
In search of the next geeky gift to give to the gadget lover in your life? Look no further than the Water Powered Calculator. Whether or not you'll actually ever use it, or if you even like math for that matter, you can't discredit the coolness and draw to a calculator (an electronic), run solely by water (the enemy of electronics). The greatest part about this calculator is as the title suggests, it uses nothing but water. No worrying about batteries and other money draining energy source...
  • Liquid cooled LED lightbulb makes a tree smile
    by Mike
    Posted July 16th, 2009 at 7:10 am
Even though many decades passed with the standard incandescent light bulb remaining largely unchanged, science in this past decade as finally set its sites on one of the world's most commonly used gadgets. A company called Eternaleds has launched a new liquid cooled LED lightbulb given the name "Hydrolux". The cooling of the internals comes by way of paraffin oil. Don't worry about toxicity as the oil is completely safe and has been deemed so by UL and ROHS standard. Currently the bulb onl...
  • TrickleSaver saves your gaming gadgets and the planet
    by Mike
    Posted July 9th, 2009 at 5:32 am
Like most gamers (I assume), I often turn of the TV after a gaming session and simply leave my PS3 or 360 on so that later I can come back and start right back up without waiting. Now, the more green readers out there may be a little red faced about this. But, it's what I do. Get over it. Then there are those other people that turn off the TV and simply forget to turn off their console -- their minds have a bit of a goldfish moment. Trickle Star would like to let you know that their new "...
  • Go Green with your camera lenses…Literally
    by Mike

All good things in life come to an end. That shiny new gadget that wowed you 8 months ago has somehow lost its luster this morning. It isn't that hot blondshell babe that it once was. Instead, it is a 45 year old middle aged women with smokers cough and rotting teeth. While not quite as nasty or extreme, gadgets to lose their luster and over time become yet another thing that eventually gets tossed in the garbage set out into the open world to spend the rest of eternity not rotting away in...
  • Pass on personal comfort for personal entertainment

    Posted June 30th, 2009 at 9:13 am
When the mercury starts rising, many people start heading for cooler pastures, particularly ones with nice soft carpet, comfy couches, and a nice ambient air temperature. That pretty much describes your typical living room. But for those unlucky souls who have to venture outside, a decrease in clothing is often warranted to keep them from melting. However, the true geek never worries about himself but about the life of his gadgets. When others are passing out left and right, you can proudl...
  • The nPower Peg: Create electricity where ever, whenever
    by Mike
    Posted June 3rd, 2009 at 12:23 pm
As gadgets get more and more complex, the pressures and drain on the batteries becomes increasingly higher. Unfortunately, battery technology has not progressed as far or as fast as other areas of the electronic world, meaning we often bump into our batteries' limits far too often. While running out of juice on your mp3 player can be a real drag, running lower on flash light power when lost in a woods can be a more serious problem. Thankfully, a new kinetic battery charger desgined by Tremo...
