iPhone Costume: 4th Edition.

  • October 28, 2010 1:29 pm

Last year we showed you a rather geeky Halloween costume that went above and beyond most. It was a almost fully working iPhone costume, 40″ display and all. This year, two more guys are at it again. Except this time it’s modeled after the latest iPhone 4 and even features a back-light to mimic a camera flash. The costume weighs 70lbs. and manages to go a little over 2 hours on a 12v battery tucked underneath. I’d say they deserve an A for effort.

TAMPA, FLA., John Savio (Center), Abigail Gardner (Featured as Apple Employee) This year they’re back at it again. John Savio and Reko Rivera went their separate ways. John created the upgraded rendition of the iPhone 4 featured here at 10x to scale, complete with a 40? LED LCD Panel, a Jailbroken iPhone 4, VGA out from the iPohone, LED Back Camera Light, weighs roughly 75 lbs and uses a mini 12v Battery with 2+ hours of battery life. The costume took a total of 3 days / 40 hours to complete.

Super. Video after the break…

Give the gift of fright: Microsoft releases Halloween theme for Windows 7

  • October 20, 2010 9:55 am

In recent years, Microsoft hasn’t been known to be exceptionally talented when it comes to design. Sure, Windows 7 is pretty slick and a big step up from Windows XP, but there’s just something about it. It lacks a certain eye candy. Perhaps that’s part of my OS X/Apple-loving side poking through. Nevertheless, theming and skinning can go quite a ways to help.

If you were staring at your desktop, desperately seeking a freshened look, let me run something by you. Microsoft has had a themes gallery available on their website since Windows 7 was released. There are many, many different options to choose from. And now for Halloween, it appears that Microsoft is getting all festive.

A new theme called “Eerie Autumn” is available in the themes gallery and consists of plenty of dark tones and spooky wallpapers. As usual, you’re free to swap out the wallpapers and window border coloring according to your own taste. But honestly, the dark look is just so cool.

Halloween animal costumes for the technologically obsessed.

We geeky humans can get quite into Halloween with all kinds of geeky costumes. But why should we be the only species to have all of the fun? Many electronic gurus also own some form of animal. It only makes sense that we pass our affinity for all things gadget on to our animals. The USS Enterprise Woof and Vadar Dog are just two of several fine examples of animal geekery that Dvice has whipped up. If you’re looking for a small mid-morning laugh, stop on over and give the 7 other costumes a looksie. It may be too late to trick out your pooch this year, but there’s always next year…

Are you a double amputee with a good sense of humor? If so, someone on Craigslist would like to have a word with you…

  • October 23, 2009 5:31 am

Physical deformations are never something to joke about. That is unless the person featuring the unfortunate deformation has fun with it themselves. If you’ve ever gone to an actual Halloween costume party, you know, one where the attendees actually get into and go over the top, you may have seen a full fledged Chewbacca costume with or without the standard C3PO parts strapped to his back. For one man in Austin, Texas, “spare parts” and the illusion of reality aren’t good enough. No sir. He wants the real damn thing.

Perhaps that’s the motivation for this guy’s Craigslist posting asking for any double amputee if they’d like to be the C3PO on his hairy back. Funny? You bet. Poor taste? Only if you don’t have any sense of humor. It takes the ride kind of person to actually fit the bill and be ok with it enough to showcase it as well. The Craigslist ad:

A double amputee (someone missing both legs – preferably at the hip) to accompany me as C3PO for the evening. We should meet ahead of time so that we can work out the backpack/harness system. There are a few parties that I want to hit and I think we will be the hit of any event we attend.

I hope someone comes forward as they will be without a doubt be the “best dressed” of any party the attend. Not to mention, passerbys on the street will have quite the chuckle as well. Godspeed Mr. Austin Texas.

Halloween invades your desktop: Grim Reaper Speakers

  • October 7, 2009 6:54 am

Want to bring a bit of Halloween flair to your desktop this year? Tired of listening to music through those tiny speakers on your computer and instead want to pick up something with a tad more oomph? Look no further than the Grim Reaper Speakers. While in reality they won’t be that much of a bump when audio quality is concerned as their peak output is a rather paltry 2.5 watts, the design is the real kicker. Don’t think Halloween is the only time you can gift the kiss of death as these would make pretty good stocking stuffers for those who like to be a tad different. Now, the only thing you have to accept is the price — $36.69. A bit high. Maybe. But for some, scaring little children and expressing your inner demon has no limits.

The Geek-o-lantern…aka the “Crylon Jack-o-Lantern”

Why not spread your digital love through a commonly viewed and loved object: The Jack-o-lantern. Except this year your Jack-o-lantern is going to be a completely different beast. If you’ve got $13 sitting around the house, some spare time, and an teensie bit of soldering know-how, you can recreate Evil Mad Scientist’s “Cylon Jack-o-lantern. The $13 of course goes towards the Larson Scanner Kit in order to give it that sinister glow. Even better, the current model is much better at sipping energy instead of chugging it like previous models of the scanner did meaning your batteries should last slightly longer than ten minutes. Why not put a geeky touch on Halloween this year and create something that will truly freak out little trick-or-treaters and completely wow their geeky parents.

Scare children by giving your desk a more hellish appearance…

skull-speakers

Building on the Halloween festivities that were presented in the previous post, if you have a desk in need of a little customization or a more homie feeling, adding something unique and head turning definitely adds to the overall appeal of a house. Are you a sick and twisted sort of individual or likes all things death? If so, awesome (get help). If not and you just like unique gadgets, the USB Skull Speakers should fulfil your decorating needs.

With a nice graphic representation of a bloody skull combined with 2.5 W output means your desk can make sweet sweet music and look eerily sinister all at the same time. Such design and sophistication are impecable at giving the kiddies a nice little nightmare or two. The only set back is that audio wise, these are probably crap. But the $47 you’ll pony up for the dual speakers of death are more than likely for the way out their design. You hooked?
