Feeling dimensionally shifty? 3D HDMI 1.4 specs now available for public consumption.

  • February 4, 2010 12:14 am

Is 3D going to be the “next big thing” as far as TV tech is concerned or is it more of a passing fad? I’m kind of leaning towards fad. Make no mistake, the 3D movies I’ve seen in theaters are pretty tight. The TV’s at CES were pretty impressive themselves. Though because of the obvious differences between a projector situated behind you, displaying a picture in front of you and a TV positioned in front of you, displaying an image in a very different manner, pros and cons of each method become apparent. I personally prefer how objects continue to jump “at you” and off the screen on 3D projectors while all of the 3D TV’s I’ve seen so far go flat at the edges of the screen. Such differences I’m sure will be cleared up and the gap narrowed as the tech for 3D TV’s progresses.

For now we’ll have to take what we can get. And finally official tonight, we consumers can finally get in and even download the 3D portion of the HDMI 1.4 specs that were recently finalized. Thanks yous can be sent to HDMI Licensing, LLC for their loosening lips and more sharing nature.

So if you find yourself bored, unable to sleep, and nothing to eat at this late hour of the night (it’s 12:09am here), why not head over to hdmi.org and get acquainted with the new spec?

Toshiba swallows pride, joins the cool kids club

It wasn’t that long ago that two electronics giants were duking it out for your dollar and world wide supremacy. The battle between Sony (Blue-ray) and Toshiba (HD-DVD) was fought out for many months in retail stores and estores across the world. In the end, Sony and Blue-ray won out. Naturally Toshiba was just a tad sour with their loss and initially announced that they had no plans to support Blue-ray. Though the good ‘ol boys in red are finally coming around to the Blue side. As they announced their intentions to join the Blue-ray Disc Association (BDA), today Toshiba announced that they have in fact finally applied for that BDA membership they talked about a couple months ago, bringing together two giants back into a somewhat harmonious relationship. Now that the world is back in one piece, expect Blue-ray adoption to more than likely increase albeit slowly still. Have you joined camp blue yet?

For all of the mobile Hi-Def photographers/video nuts, Sony’s latest attemp at miniturization is paying off as the specs for the “World’s Smallest” camera module are pretty amazing. The new MCB1172 HD camera module developed and created by Sony is smaller than a quarter yet has enough muscle packed inside to capture 8.3 megapixel stills, shoot 720p video at 30fps featuring image stabilization, face detection, and even high-ISO support. The coolest part is that if you just so happen to feel like you want to recreate your own matrix scenes, Sony’s latest wonder chip has got you covered as it will start flipping through frames at an brisk 120fps ensuring you get all of the slow molassesy motion your crave. With as fast as technology and the gadget world reinvents itself, it shouldn’t be too long before we see this little beast showing up in our phones.
