Several weeks back we told you that iOS developing outfit, Infini-dev, had successfully ported 3rd party app store “Icy” to the latest versions of iOS. Add another almost forgotten app store to Infini-dev’s belt as once popular “Installer” is also back from the dead.
Because the underlying code of Installer and Cydia is different, repos cannot be used interchangeably between apps and as such, it’s usefulness will be somewhat limited until more repositories supporting Installer come back online. With that said, why venture away from the long-time favorite of Cydia?
For starters, competing app Icy is said to be 3x faster than Cydia while also being less error prone and supports various skins/themes. We’re sure that with time Installer can offer up its own fresh exclusives to keep Cydia (and even Icy) developers on their toes as well. In our eyes, competition is a good thing so having several major 3rd party iOS jailbreak app resources could prove beneficial.
Users looking to try out the newly re-released Installer App need only add http://fr0stdev.co.cc/repo in Cydia or Icy and select “Installer”, install, respring, and enjoy.
Now that Cydia has some competition, anyone care to declare the allegiance?

Cydia has provided an awesome opportunity from App Store rejects and app developers looking to offer something above and beyond what Apple “allows” on consumers’ iOS devices. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other options in 3rd party app stores.
One such early competitor to Cydia was Icy. Throughout the last many months, Cydia took off while development on Icy slowed and eventually came to a halt — which was a shame seeing as how Icy was the more polished, faster 3rd party iOS app store.
Good news — it’s back, thanks to Samtulp6 and iPwnM0nster from Infini_Dev. Icy 1.4.7 will officially be launched next week, but if you’re chompin’ at the bit to get in on the action now you can do so by adding “http://repo.ispazio.net” as a Cydia repo. If you decide to take the plunge, be sure to let us know how it goes!

Those of you holding off for an official Dev-Team jailbreak solution to the recently released 3.1.2 firmware pushed out by Apple have something exciting to come home to. PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X has officially been released bringing with it freedom for most. I say most because 3G iPod Touches aren’t supported. It’s also important to note that in order to keep your phone unlocked, you’ll need to upgrade to 3.1.2 via custom built ISPW’s via PwnageTool as fresh 3.1.2 devices have an updated baseband that at this point isn’t able to be downgraded. Finally, the iPod Touch 2nd Gen must already be jailbroken in order to stay jailbroken on 3.1.2 and using PwnageTool. The Dev-Team does mention however if enough demand is seen, they’ll make the process easier for 2nd Gen touch owners as well. Why they didn’t from the get go is beyond me. Hey, I’m not a software developer/code magician so I’ll respect their decisions.
Per Dev-Team:
This release allows your baseband to remain unlocked at 3.1.2, but it does not unlock a new baseband put there by restoring to official 3.1.x. It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband.
If you’re looking for something a bit more Windows based, revert back to Blackra1n for now.

Don’t even try to hide the fact that you, like most everyone else love the freedom. (Duh). In regards to the oh so popular iPhone/3G, the Dev-Team has finally released the ultrasn0w software package that will free your iPhone from it’s carrier shackles. All you have to do is jailbreak your phone using redsn0w or Pwnage Tool 3.0, go to Cydia or Icy and add the repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com , and finally search for ultrasn0w. Install said package, reboot your phone and get ready to enjoy the freedom that life was meant to bring. Oh, by the way, T-Mobile users should disable 3G before the unlocking goes down! Happy Unlocking.
**Anyone who is using ultrasn0w, are you having any luck SIM swapping with a BlackBerry and actually getting the data on the iPhone to work?
