iPhone 3G Losing AirPlay Support in Upcoming iOS 4.2 Update. #ios

  • November 11, 2010 11:13 pm

In other Apple news tonight: It appears that iOS 4.2 on the iPhone 3G is yet another iOS 4.x update that is getting neutered before gracing the aging handset’s hardware. Besides lacking such great features as multi-tasking, custom wallpapers, and GameCenter, it looks like AirPlay is the latest major feature to get axed. At this rate, why even upgrade to 4.x on the 3G? (That’s the question we’re asking around here at least.)

The odd thing is of course that AirPlay worked fine on several different iOS 4.2 betas on the iPhone 3G up until the latest GM. Whether or not it’s a typical Apple-style “let’s remove basic, promised features and entice people to upgrade” remains to be seen. It’s possible that Apple is working out a few kinks and will re-enable said feature in a future update. But if the general consensus is that nothing was wrong with it up until it was removed, pleasant, optimistic thoughts aren’t exactly leading the way inside my head.

Check out more proof in the digital pudding being documented in a short video over at 9to5Mac.

iPhone 3G and iOS 4.2 Offers Marginal Experience. (Time to Upgrade)

  • November 7, 2010 12:41 pm

If you were one of millions of iPhone 3G users anxiously awaiting iOS 4.0 earlier this year only to have your dreams crushed once it was actually released have waited with abaited breath for Apple to correct the issue. The issue of course being poor, slow, choppy performance on the dated hardware. iOS 4.1 offered a slightly better experience, though the overall experience was still rather poor. That leaves those same users looking to iOS 4.2 to fix their problems. Fromt he few videos that have surfaced so far with the latest iOS 4.2 developer builds, the performance is notched a little closer towards “acceptible”. But honestly, if you want a smooth iOS 4.x experience, you’ll need at least an iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 3G’s hardware is simply too weak.

Nevertheless, if you’d like to take a gander at what the iPhone 3G can do on iOS 4.2, hop inside and check out the vid…

iPhone (Edge) vs. iPhone 3G vs. iPhone 3GS vs. iPhone 4: Fight!

  • July 29, 2010 2:27 pm

Anyone with half a brain cell could tell you that the latest and greatest iPhone 4 is faster than the previous iterations of the device, with each past generation becoming increasingly slower compared to the newest model. But wouldn’t it be so much more fun and enveloping to watch the four generations of iPhone to go head to head in a few different scenarios? Of course it would.

Hop inside and see it for yourself. You may be surprised. While the iPhone 4 blows the other devices out of the water in gaming, other things aren’t as cut and dry as you might believe…

As we welcome fall, we do so without iPhone MMS/Tethering

att-iphone-fail

So much for late summer eh AT&T? I’m so beyond fed up with the entire company as a whole. Their god awful network is no surprise to many, nor is there any chance in hell they are going to garner any hope or praise from me…let alone a contract extension. Staring at dropping temperatures and shorter days, I figured it would be fitting to highlight that as we enter the fall season, iPhone owners nation wide here in the US are still without the most requested features: MMS and Tethering. The lack of MMS is so far beyond stupid words escape me. Everything from their archaic network to manually having to re-enable MMS on every iPhone account has been thrown out there. The delay on tethering on the other hand has no legitimate reason. AT&T’s network is already buckling under normal iPhone usage, throwing in even heavy data loads via tethering is sure to enhance the overall experience (no /sarcasm tag needed). The latest rumors even suggest that the September 9th iPod event could be the time to shine for AT&T to announce the activation of said lacking features. Though, the two companies doing so at the iPod even seems rather strange. Of course, if iPhone OS 3.1 is announced/released, it may be a bit more fitting. The least Big Blue could do is drop us a one liner…something…to indicate that they are still actually working on the issue and what the hold up is.

Still, as we get our Halloween costumes prepared and look further into the turkey season, one has to ask, just how much longer do we all have to suffer?

**Update:Engadget is reporting that AT&T has officially announced MMS coming on September 25th…still…well…into…fall. Good job on the epic failure guys. Tethering if you haven’t already jailbroken and enabled it or download a modded carrier file is still claimed to be coming “sometime in the future”. Boy am I sure glad AT&T stays on top of their promises…

X-Power 1 adds a new twist in the iPhone extended battery game.

  • July 29, 2009 6:12 am

x-power-1

Extended battery options for the iPhone/3G/S have exploded into a huge aftermarket niche as we all know the iPhone’s battery across all iterations is pretty much crap when you use your iPhone for anything that it’s marketed for. Thankfully, 3rd party vendors have kept busy bringing consumers many different options in the war against the ever dying battery. So far we’ve seen batteries built into cases, stand alone batteries and everything in between. Oh so we thought. However, the X-Power 1 is adding a new dimension to the iDevice charging game. This little wonder gadget looks just like your standard iPod/iPhone USB sync cable with one added bulge in the middle where a rechargeable battery is housed. While the built in battery looks small and relatively worthless, the manufacturers claim up to additional run times of:

  • 5 hours on 3G, 9 hours on 2G, up to 5.4 hours additional on Wi-Fi, standby time of up to 270 hours, audio playback up to 20 hours, and video playback of up to 6 hours.

Clearly it won’t let you write a novel when on vacation in the Colorado wilderness for a week, but it will get you through those few extra hours in the day when your battery is normally screaming for mercy and an open outlet to cuddle up with. For those of you who don’t want the added bulk of a battery case or the inconvenience of having to lug around battery packs to plug in to, the X-Power 1 may be just the thing for you.

iPhone 3G”S” not so quick on the up and up

  • July 9, 2009 8:14 am

slow

The iPhone 3GS is marketed by Apple as a worthwhile speed improvement over the iPhone 3G. While the bumped up processor and better still graphics chip have easily noticable speed increases over the older 3G model, the actual data speed side leaves much to be desired. In actuatlity, clever marketing jargon and coy business tactics helped Apple push the 3GS as much faster than it really is. What exactly are the dirty secrets? It all has to do with upload speeds…or the lack thereof…

Flexible Mini Capsule Microphone ensures your iPhone audio is top notch

  • July 8, 2009 1:32 pm

mini-capsule
If you’re a big audio notes taker or have the new iPhone 3GS and simply want better playback in your captured videos, the little Flexible Mini Capsule Microphone may be just the iPhone addition for you. Considering the iPhone 3G/S’s microphone is located away form the camera/video lens, the audio you normally get isn’t as great as it could be. That’s where this little gem comes in. By facing the microphone towards the content being captured, your audio will come back much more crisp and distortion free, not to mention louder. Such ammenaties don’t have to cost as much as a human organ. Brando’s Workshop has the Flexible Mini Capsule for the low price of $14. Mobile video hobbiests, are you down?

Pwnage Tool 3.0 releases all except the newcomer

Hackers and jailbreakers take note, iPhone and iPhone 3G running OS 3.0…check.  Jailbreakable?  Check.  Now, the newcomers.  iPhone 3G S, not so fast.  If you have picked up one of the latest omnipresent phones, your best bet is to not even try as the current Pwnage 3.0 tool won’t do a damn thing for you.  However, if you’re running a non-iPhone 3G S, by all means go ahead and open her up!  Oh one more thing, an unlocking solution for 3,0 is not available…yet.  We’ll have to wait for ultrasn0w for that added bit of freedom.
