Anyone with half a brain cell could tell you that the latest and greatest iPhone 4 is faster than the previous iterations of the device, with each past generation becoming increasingly slower compared to the newest model. But wouldn’t it be so much more fun and enveloping to watch the four generations of iPhone to go head to head in a few different scenarios? Of course it would.
Hop inside and see it for yourself. You may be surprised. While the iPhone 4 blows the other devices out of the water in gaming, other things aren’t as cut and dry as you might believe…
Sadness I know. If you weren’t one of the early bird 3GS adopters instead taking your sweet time to mosey on over and are looking forward to all of the jailbreaking goodness, I’m here to dash your dreams and stomp on everything happy in your mind. It’s beginning to come to light that Apple is shipping iPhone 3GSs with a new bootrom, iBoot-359.3.2 to be exact. Further adding fuel to the speculation fire is that “MuscleNerd”, a member of the infamous Dev-Team has confirmed himself that these newer iPhone’s are in fact crippled. In case you were wondering, (duh…of course you are) this new bootrom began it’s cancerous growth last week sometime. Sucks doesn’t it? Anyone buy one of these newer 3GSs only to find out that you’re SOL for the time being when jailbreaking is concerned?
Eh, no worries. The Dev-Team will break this one too…

So much for late summer eh AT&T? I’m so beyond fed up with the entire company as a whole. Their god awful network is no surprise to many, nor is there any chance in hell they are going to garner any hope or praise from me…let alone a contract extension. Staring at dropping temperatures and shorter days, I figured it would be fitting to highlight that as we enter the fall season, iPhone owners nation wide here in the US are still without the most requested features: MMS and Tethering. The lack of MMS is so far beyond stupid words escape me. Everything from their archaic network to manually having to re-enable MMS on every iPhone account has been thrown out there. The delay on tethering on the other hand has no legitimate reason. AT&T’s network is already buckling under normal iPhone usage, throwing in even heavy data loads via tethering is sure to enhance the overall experience (no /sarcasm tag needed). The latest rumors even suggest that the September 9th iPod event could be the time to shine for AT&T to announce the activation of said lacking features. Though, the two companies doing so at the iPod even seems rather strange. Of course, if iPhone OS 3.1 is announced/released, it may be a bit more fitting. The least Big Blue could do is drop us a one liner…something…to indicate that they are still actually working on the issue and what the hold up is.
Still, as we get our Halloween costumes prepared and look further into the turkey season, one has to ask, just how much longer do we all have to suffer?
**Update:Engadget is reporting that AT&T has officially announced MMS coming on September 25th…still…well…into…fall. Good job on the epic failure guys. Tethering if you haven’t already jailbroken and enabled it or download a modded carrier file is still claimed to be coming “sometime in the future”. Boy am I sure glad AT&T stays on top of their promises…

Extended battery options for the iPhone/3G/S have exploded into a huge aftermarket niche as we all know the iPhone’s battery across all iterations is pretty much crap when you use your iPhone for anything that it’s marketed for. Thankfully, 3rd party vendors have kept busy bringing consumers many different options in the war against the ever dying battery. So far we’ve seen batteries built into cases, stand alone batteries and everything in between. Oh so we thought. However, the X-Power 1 is adding a new dimension to the iDevice charging game. This little wonder gadget looks just like your standard iPod/iPhone USB sync cable with one added bulge in the middle where a rechargeable battery is housed. While the built in battery looks small and relatively worthless, the manufacturers claim up to additional run times of:
- 5 hours on 3G, 9 hours on 2G, up to 5.4 hours additional on Wi-Fi, standby time of up to 270 hours, audio playback up to 20 hours, and video playback of up to 6 hours.
Clearly it won’t let you write a novel when on vacation in the Colorado wilderness for a week, but it will get you through those few extra hours in the day when your battery is normally screaming for mercy and an open outlet to cuddle up with. For those of you who don’t want the added bulk of a battery case or the inconvenience of having to lug around battery packs to plug in to, the X-Power 1 may be just the thing for you.

iPhone users just can’t seem to catch a break can they. First the iPhone 3.0 update has spawned numerous WiFi connection issues. Now, 3GS owners in particular have a new problem to worry about regarding WiFi. If you are in fact a 3GS owner and were aware of poor WiFi reception and speed, try turning off Bluetooth. The iPhone 3GS makes use of a WiFi/bluetooth chip while the 3G uses two seperate chips for each. The resulting sharing of the antenna in the 3GS is apparently the reason for the problems. Users have reported that turning of Bluetooth remedies the WiFi problems. Apple is aware of the issue and supposedly working on it. 3.1 couldn’t come soon enough…

The iPhone 3GS is marketed by Apple as a worthwhile speed improvement over the iPhone 3G. While the bumped up processor and better still graphics chip have easily noticable speed increases over the older 3G model, the actual data speed side leaves much to be desired. In actuatlity, clever marketing jargon and coy business tactics helped Apple push the 3GS as much faster than it really is. What exactly are the dirty secrets? It all has to do with upload speeds…or the lack thereof…

If you’re a big audio notes taker or have the new iPhone 3GS and simply want better playback in your captured videos, the little Flexible Mini Capsule Microphone may be just the iPhone addition for you. Considering the iPhone 3G/S’s microphone is located away form the camera/video lens, the audio you normally get isn’t as great as it could be. That’s where this little gem comes in. By facing the microphone towards the content being captured, your audio will come back much more crisp and distortion free, not to mention louder. Such ammenaties don’t have to cost as much as a human organ. Brando’s Workshop has the Flexible Mini Capsule for the low price of $14. Mobile video hobbiests, are you down?

All of you lucky iPhone developers or those of you who simply signed up to get the goods early have something to get all giddy about today. iPhone 3.1 Beta has been released by Apple and is vying for your attention. Just a forewarning, if you enjoy the freedoms of unlocking…you may want to hold off. So what exactly does this new update bring? That and oh so much more is right inside.

Following the more uplifting success story below, this next story will sink the heart of at least a few…Gibralter…sit down. It seems all that new found power the iPhone 3GS is packin’ under the hood can at times get a wee bit hot. While in most circumstances, the iPhone has no problem whatsoever keeping itself cool below the collar, reports are surfacing of white iPhone 3GS’s getting a very unflattering tan. The picture depicts just how ugly this new look is — brownish ridges on the edges of the phone’s back casing. The owner of the phone pictured above claimed that a heavy session of 3G usage and GPS was to blame. Hopefully this doesn’t turn out to be a wider spread issue. If you just can’t get enough, another picture is inside to further that queasy feeling.
