Tired of “normal” lighting fixtures that pollute every home improvement store you’ve been to? Me too! I don’t exactly like “normal” or blending in. I prefer to take the tastfully standing out approach to many aspects of life. As such, something as out there as a “book lamp” would fit in well at my house.
Take exhibit A above, a perfect example of downright cheap ingenuity. All you need is an old hardback book and a small compact light bulb. That’s it. A rather stylish, unique, and conversation starting end piece for your living room. Check out Instructables for the lowdown. Like?

I remember when I was a kid I had some strange fascination with lava lamps. At my worst point, I had amassed a total of 13 lava lamps — all going at the same time. Ya, it was pretty hectic. But more technological times have come and gone since then, resulting in some pretty cool changes, particularly in how the old Lava Lamp works. Nowadays, the new hotness in illumination technology is LEDs. Naturally, the Lava Lamp has received an update with said technology.
The LED Tube Lamp isn’t the “official” new age Lava Lamp, but based on how it operates and looks, you’d be hard pressed not to find at least a few people making the same observation. Some may be unsure of this new look, longing for the floating blobs of years past that have won over so many already. But seeing as how this isn’t an actual replacement and more of an addition to the Lava Lamp lifestyle means you can have that cake everyone talks so highly about and eat it too!
The only issue with the particular LED lamp picture above is the price — $225. Though make note, each and ever LED Tube Lamp is made to order, so the lofty price isn’t that surprising now is it?

Far too often I see gadgets with all fluff and no flavor pass before me. While a pretty face is more than welcome, and in fact a major bullet point I look for, at the end of the day I tend to fall on the utilitarian side. That is, what good is a pretty face if it doesn’t do anything but sit there and…look pretty? The whole function vs. form thing is exactly what Onda Communications is fighting with their “Elis: Wifi Lamp”.
In short, the Elis is a rather trendy looking lamp that also doubles as a WiFi router. No more unsightly router sitting out for all to see. It’s a pretty neat concept and one that would definitely sell truckloads of units if implemented into other household designs as well. For the function minded people — it’ll top out at 21Mbps. See, it isn’t so bad now is it?

Need another Mac inspired gadget/piece of furniture/custom electronic to really set the tone and prove to the world you’re no ordinary geek? Right, onward then. A few days back we mentioned the iBook G4 clock,a nifty little piece of custom work in that it made use of an old iBook for it’s parts. This “recycling” of sorts makes the planet a little less polluted and of course makes whomever owns an iBook G4 clock a lot nicer to look at. It’s a win win for everyone. But what if you want more geeky custom gadgets strewn about your home or office?
That’s where the iMac G4 lamp comes in. This lamp, made from a recycled iMac G4 (duh), features a minimalistic yet visually simulating form that begs to be included in your office front and center. Buying one pre-made from Etsy will set you back $125. It’s a little steep for a lamp. Though this isn’t your typical lamp nor are spare parts for building said lamp readily (or cheaply) available. I think it’s worth the price for a bit of added geek image, don’t you?

I don’t know about you, but when I went to bed in my younger years, a glass of milk usually adorned the table next to me. Did it actually help me sleep as dear mother would always say? That’s debatable. Frankly, if I woke up in the middle of the night thirsty, the last thing I wanted to do was venture through the house for a drink. A quick slurp from some milk right beside me was perfect.
With that said, many young children have a pairing of things in their bedroom — milk and a nightlight. My nightlight was a Thomas the Train figurine. Classy stuff. Why not reduce clutter and combine the two?
The LED Milk Glass is clever. Very clever. The only downside is that you can’t actually drink the milk in this glass as doing so would devour your tongue with billions of angry electrons and a hospital visit that surely wouldn’t be anywhere near the top of your fun list.
Disasters aside, the LED Milk Glass is a small 3x AAA powered plastic light that bathes your room in soft and subtle white light for when mother nature clocks out. The coolest part however is how you turn it on/off. You can either be “normal” and use the on/off switch located on the underside of the light or you can simply turn it upside or knock it over — for a real glass of milk also “turns off” when such things happen.
Did more thought go into this light than needed to be? Probably. But there’s no denying it’s cool (as I’ve already ordered one). $11.50 and it’s yours. Available on Amazon.

Of all the lighting fixture/lamp concepts and designs I’ve seen, the Fiat Lux Lamp designed by Constance Guisset and Grégory Cid easily takes the crown for coolest, most innovative lamp design of the decade — the next decade. Some may see this admission as coming a wee bit early seeing as how the next decade doesn’t start for a couple more days. Even still, though I already know how fast technology does in fact progress and evolve, I’m left wondering how anyone can top the Fiat Lux design for at least another 15-20 years. (Hint: that’s a challenge please).
Before I get too much more excited and stumble over my words, perhaps you’d like to know how it works hmm?
The design is simple yet ingenious and straight out of a sci-fi movie. Instead of the tried and true on/off switch that usually adorns some solid surface, the Fiat Lux uses a levitating orb that when placed underneath the lamp instantly illuminates the lamp above. The basic idea involves magnetism and the whole emerging filed of wireless electricity of which magnetism has a very important role.
Who’s intrigued and wishing we were counting down the hours until 2030?

The big cities of the world are often some of the prime locations to see breakthroughs in technology and gadgets tested. They are also one big trash bin. Why people can’t walk two more feet to the trash can to throw something away is beyond me. Apparently the ground looks better to them. To each his own.
It’s no secret that there is a ton of energy sitting, wasted in trash. Now we can’t just go on burning trash as that releases even more pollutants and toxic chemicals into the air. But there are other ways. Designer Haneum Lee has revealed his concept of the Gaon street light/wastebasket. The beauty of this device is that it is more or less looks just like any normal street lamp save for the added girth around the mid section. That girth is where the magic happens. The lamp turns biodegradable trash into methane gas. The gas is then used to light the lamp. Pretty sweet if I do say so myself. Sadly it’s just a concept for now.
There are a couple ways to make this design even better. (1) design the device so that all trash, not just biodegradable, is able to be used for energy. (2) Install a solar panel on top of the lamp and harvest some of those sun rays that are ever prevalent. One of these won’t make much of a difference. But imagine what an entire city fitted with these (solar panel add-on too) and connected to a smart grid could do? Ya, being green is cool.

If you think about a stereotypical overpriced novelty gift, what comes to your mind? For some it is some kind of wacky flash drive. For others it is a mash up of one or more gadgets into some uber gadget. Still for others, a giant gummi bear LED lamp may come to mind. Well folks, if you think like the latter, today is your day. The Giant Gummi Bear LED lamp is just what it sounds like, 7″ of rubber molded into the shape of a bear with an LED crammed down its throat illuminating your dark little world. Instead of traditional earth killing batteries, the Gummi Lamp uses rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries for a more eco-friendly footprint. A couple hours of charging and you’re good to go for up to 20 hours of LED/Bear provided lighting happiness. Now, try to quell the little kid in you from taking a nibble as this isn’t a real giant gummi. Somehow I don’t think processed rubber is going to taste very well. If you can get over the un-edibleness, you may want to prepare for the next obstacle: price. These little glowing bears of joy will set you back a ridiculous $125 per bear. But, you can get a knock out deal of all five for $500. Sweet! Who just lost interest? While these LED lamps are really cool, $125 just seems a bit too expensive…don’t you think?

Gadget of the year award has just arrived folks. If you have a sick sense of humor, *raises hand*, the Duck Lamp is quite possibly the gadget you have been looking for. With the soft and elegant body of a duck and a lamp rammed down the now open neck, this little freak gadget will please the sickos while simultaneously scaring the hell out of those obnoxious and annoying kids that live at the end of your block. Don’t reserve the Duck Lamp to some dark corner of your basement. No, instead, display it “loud and proud” in your front window. Let those little brats know exactly what you do to species that “misbehave”. So who is getting one? Anyone? Anyone?
