LG is the latest Windows based PC manufacturer to try their hand at dethroning Apple’s tiny Macbook Air with a new line of ultrabooks — Intel powered ultra-light laptops that don’t sacrifice power in the name of ultimate portability. At the same time, LG made sure not to ignore traditional laptop users, and even managed to toss in a decent multitouch all-in-one unit too. Full details after the break…

Usually when we drool over highly overclocked machines we’re talking about big, hulking desktop computers. But the upcoming EON17-S by ORIGIN PC is taking the world of “mobile” computing to an all new level.
The EON17-S’ claim to fame is a 4.5GHz overclock potential (when equipped with the Intel Extreme Edition Core™ i7-2920XM 4.0-4.5GHz with Turbo Boost w/ 8MB Cache) earning it the “world’s fastest” tag. If the aforementioned silicon is a bit much for your needs, things scale all the way down to a more battery-friendly Intel Core™ i5-2520 humming along at 2.50GHz. GPU options include Nvidia GTX 460M, 470M 485M, as well as AMD HD6970M. RAM can be had at anywhere from 4GB all the way up to 32GB and hard drive storage at up to 750GB (HDD) or 512GB (SSD) in RAID 0 or RAID 1 configurations.
The general assortment of USB 2 and USB 3 (2) ports, eSATA, HDMI, 7.1 audio, gig network connections, and Windows 7 also make the cut. Gazing at all the wonderful pixels come by way of an LED-backlit 17.3″ 1920 x 1080 display.
Anyone want to take bets on how long the 8 Cell Smart Lithium-Ion Battery (76.96WHr) will last? ORIGIN states “up to 100 minutes”. We’ll say ~ 30-40 in the heat of the moment. More images after the break…
Starting at $1759.
How many times has it been said that tablets are the latest “fad”? Countless times, actually. Everyone from high profile CEOs to tech blogs just like GS have made the claim. The common claim is that in the end, people really want a powerful desktop/laptop for their hardcore computing needs. And when they don’t, the often herald savior of traditional desktop computing, the netbook, would fill the void.
The reality: they haven’t…

If fraggin’ foes and portability are your top two concerns in life, the newly revealed Alienware M14x looks to be your best weapon. A nice balance between the smaller M11x and larger M17x, the M14x gets the job done thanks to a bevy of higher end features including an Intel Core i7-2820QM humming along at 2.3 GHz, Nvidia GT555M, options for upto 750GB 7200 RPM HDD or SATA2/SATA3 SSDs up to 256GB, 1366 x 768 or 1920 x 1080 display resolutions, Klipsch speakers, and LTE/WiMAX cellular connectivity.

The MacBook Air fighter that wowed us at CES, the Samsung 9 Series laptop, has finally been dated. Starting this month in South Korea and spreading to the rest of the world come March, the Samsung 9 Series laptop is one of the few ultra-thin, sleek looking laptops that we want — really want. Besides the dark duralumin case, the 9 series features Core i5 processors, 128GB SSD, 4GB of RAM, a 1366 x 768 display, Intel HD Graphics, WiFi/Bluetooth USB 3.0 (with 2.0 ports as well), LAN port, HDMI, microSD, backlit keyboard, and 6-cell battery. Windows 7 is the OS of choice.
We’ll note that for a MBA replacement, it is actually a bit overpriced (ironic — Apple haters, begin slinging items now…). The 13-inch MBA with 128GB SSD, higher resolution 1200 x 800 display, and much more capable Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics is only $1,299. Granted, the 9 Series has a leg up with 4GB of RAM to the Air’s 2GB and an included LAN port whereas the Air is dead in the water if now wireless waves are to be had. But that’s hardly reason enough for the nearly $1k difference.
But we’re all about choice here at GS. And if you feel the Samsung 9 Series is worth the $2k sticker, than so be it. Buy it, use it, and enjoy it. (We still want one.) Anyone have a 9 Series in their near future?

While the use of Intel’s latest Sandy Bridge platform on the hot off the assembly line refresh MacBook Pros, there is something potentially even more exciting — Thunderbolt. To those of you not familiar with Thunderbolt, it is really nothing more than a renaming of Intel’s LightPeak technology that we’ve heard bantered about every once in a while over the last several years. The promise from Intel is 10Gbps of data transfer — twice as fast as USB 3.0′s theoretical maximum of 5Gbps. Adding to the party is that LightPeak is dual channel meaning you can get 10Gbps up and down.
Of course, one other intriguing part about Thunderbolt, is that according to Intel’s official Thunderbolt page, Thunderbolt is compatible with current DisplayPort ports and devices as well as also using the PCI Express protocol for increase compatibility. Add in the ability to daisy-chain devices together and you’ve got quite a strong USB contender with Thunderbolt.
Now that a major hardware manufacturer (Apple) has jumped on board with Thunderbolt, other manufacturers should join the party as well in the coming months.

While the official unveiling is but mere minutes to hours away, there’s something special about leaked information. A 9to5Mac source has leaked 5 new MBP SKUs spanning from 13.3″ all the way up to 17″. We’ve already seen the 13 incher’s specs break cover over the last day. And until Apple’s store comes back online, the current “rumors” are all about the 15″ and 17″ laptops — 2.2GHz/2.7GHz dual-core processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM @1,333, and choices of 500GB or 750GB hard drives. Graphics power is handled by an 1GB AMD 6750 and the much hyped mini-Display Port/Thunderbolt combo port comes along for the ride too. The 17″ MBP gains the 1920 x 1080 display as standard while also gaining a 2.2GHz quad-core i7 processor. Both the 15″ and 17″ models have a matte display as an available option.
In total, there are 5 new MBP SKUs. Currently, ship time is said to be less than 24 hours. While this isn’t “confirmed” just quite yet, it shouldn’t be much longer until Apple makes all of the above public knowledge. F5 button getting worn out yet?

We haven’t said much about the various MacBook Pro refresh rumors thus far, but with this morning’s more legitimate claims from an ever growing list of sources we can’t hold off any longer. First up, the 16GB SSD OS/boot drive rumors are all but confirmed. This dual-mode solution gives you a super fast boot/shutdown times and over OS responsiveness while the second HDD will allow you to store heaps of files. We’re hearing that Apple will also allow customers to swap out the Superdrive for a second SSD.
Display options include a new, higher resolution 1440 x 900 option for the 13″ MBPs along with a matte-screen choice for the higher end MBP baby. The 15″ MBP will gain a 1680 x 1050 resolution panel (1920 x 1080 still available as an upgrade). Finally, the 13″ and 15″ MBPs will ship with 4GB of RAM standard with the 17″ getting a nice boost to 8GB out the door.
Even better than the above goodies comes by way of a claimed 12 hour battery life for the 13″ MBP and still plenty respectable 11-hour battery life for the 15 incher.
But the one rumor that has most people in an uproar currently is that these latest MBPs will feature Intel’s new LightPeak technology (rebranded “ThunderBolt”), which offers 10Gb/s transfers rates — double that of USB 3.0. Further adding fuel to the fire, an image leaked showing a new mysterious port on a MBP. Whether it is Light Peak (or even a MBP) are still unconfirmed.
Of course, it will take a bit of time for hardware manufacturers to build peripherals and accessories for the new technology. But having it standard on Apple hardware moving forward could provide very fruitful for adoption. Intel is holding a Light Peak even on Thursday, with Apple’s unveiling supposedly happening later the same day.
Stay tuned as we’ll be all over it!
Update
German Apple site fscklog has what they claim to be a snapshot of the 13″ MBP spec sheet. Looks like these “rumors” are getting more real as the morning goes on.
In other news, I have a MBP for sale…
