Levitate your toys with this sweet plug-in gadget.

“Make your own magnets”. Sounds kind of nice in writing. But it’s much cooler in person. At least that’s the vibe I’m getting from looking at the image above. In any event, I’ve got a coffee table with this thing’s name on it.

To use it, slap a magnet on something small, put it in the center, and plug it in. Simple. Effective. Cool. Excuse me while I test every single thing in my house for levitating abilities…

Personal Hover Chair an elderly geek’s dream come true.

  • February 23, 2010 9:52 am

You know, seeing as how I’m still pretty young, I tend to ignore the entire sector of the gadget world dedicated to elderly people. It just doesn’t interest me. However, the personal Elderly hovercraft chair unit demoed by Japan’s Kobe Gakuin University has me genuinely excited for the older years in my future.

The levitating chair uses several air compressors mounted to the underside of unit, much like a hockey table levitates a plastic puck. There’s still a few hurdles to overcome though. One glaring issue is that the surface as to be relatively flat and smooth. Even the thin and relatively flat rub or the tatami mats the university has on their floors in the demo area. Long story short — no off-roading in your hover chair quite yet.

Elderly geeks (and young geeks who will inevitably make it there someday) should be pretty excited about this. Hell, work out the terrain issues and I’d get one just to float around the house even with my good legs. Wouldn’t you? Be sure to check out the vid below.

Scare the kids and impress the parents: The Ghost Lamp

  • February 10, 2010 8:58 pm

Those in search of a more “modern” looking light fixture for their humble domain have probably spent hours, if not days plundering through web page after web page and store after store. Lucky for you, I have a feed reader list that is longer than *ya…I’m out of witty comments again…put yours here*. The whole floating effect is perfect for freaking out the kiddies and impressing parents alike with it’s border line impossible feats of science and apparent levitation. Hands down, creator and designer Tim Baute has created the coolest lamp I’ve seen thus far.

The only hurdle to get around here is the $250 (small) and $275 (large) asking prices. Sure they’re kind of steep for rather plain and minimalistic lamps. But then again, they look like they’re levitating. Come on, how cool is that?

Fiat Lux Lamp with floating on/off orb wins lamp design of the decade.

  • December 29, 2009 2:10 pm

Of all the lighting fixture/lamp concepts and designs I’ve seen, the Fiat Lux Lamp designed by Constance Guisset and Grégory Cid easily takes the crown for coolest, most innovative lamp design of the decade — the next decade. Some may see this admission as coming a wee bit early seeing as how the next decade doesn’t start for a couple more days. Even still, though I already know how fast technology does in fact progress and evolve, I’m left wondering how anyone can top the Fiat Lux design for at least another 15-20 years. (Hint: that’s a challenge please).

Before I get too much more excited and stumble over my words, perhaps you’d like to know how it works hmm?

The design is simple yet ingenious and straight out of a sci-fi movie. Instead of the tried and true on/off switch that usually adorns some solid surface, the Fiat Lux uses a levitating orb that when placed underneath the lamp instantly illuminates the lamp above. The basic idea involves magnetism and the whole emerging filed of wireless electricity of which magnetism has a very important role.

Who’s intrigued and wishing we were counting down the hours until 2030?

The Future has just arrived: Levitating Mice, Humans “up”!

floating-mouse

When you were a young child, did you ever dream of spacey/futuristic technology coming down to earth? Technologies such as levitation (a.k.a. “anti-gravity”). While nothing is “impossible” as much as it is simply not known yet or undiscovered, anti-gravity was one of those things that on paper seemed possible yet we just couldn’t figure out how to apply it in the real world. Thank everything hold some braniac scientists have figured it out. The lucky little mouse you see above is one of the first living beings to experience human made anti-gravity or levitation. The best part is that the feat simply uses refined technology…
