Absinthe Installed Almost 1,000,000 Times. Updated To Support Linux

  • January 24, 2012 1:32 am

It’s been a crazy weekend. The A5 owners across the World were finally granted access to the sweet action of a jailbroken iDevice on 5.0+. We’ve been waiting since October to bask in the glorious aroma of this amazing liquor called Absinthe. The Dev Teams involved with the latest addition to the ever lasting cat-and-mouse game with Apple has touted a whopping 1 million installs across iPhone 4S’s, iPad 2s as well as the iPad 2s that were previously jailbroken on a 4.x level. The A5 version of the latest exploits was released this past Friday morning and since them people have been crashing repos and servers trying to join in on the fun.

We come by these exact numbers by the way of Cydia. The first time you launch Cydia, the iDevice queries Saurik’s server for the list of available SHSH Blobs. And since this past Friday, here are the numbers of new attempts to see the SHSH Blobs:

  • 491,325 new iPhone4,1 devices
  • 308,967 new iPad2 devices
  • 152,940 previously jailbroken (at 4.x) iPad2 devices

Along with these crazy numbers, Absinthe was silently updated to version 0.3 to include Linux support, as well as fix some potention bugs for win32. If you haven’t jailbroken your iPad 2 or iPhone 4S running 5.0 – 5.0.1, please run over to greenpois0n.com and give it a shot.

CESUnveiled: Qooq Kitchen Tablet

  • January 8, 2012 11:15 pm

The Qooq tablet is a slate that is designed to protect your recipes and tablet from the dangers of the kitchen. The Qooq (pronounced cook) is a water and heat-safe tablet that is designed to sit next to the cutting board. With a water resistant case that will withstand the nastiest grease splatter and wine spill is actually quite pretty. While wiping my greasy fingers all over it I was quite surprised how it cleaned off with a swipe of a towel. The tablet has built in corner stands to lay down raised over your counter as well as a stand that will keep it upright as you’re creating your culinary masterpiece.

The Qooq is a Linux OS based machine that will keep your recipes in order as well as give you a recipe list and videos of the meal you are making being prepared. The 10.1″ screen is not at all bad on the eyes. I have used a few tablets in my days, and I was impressed with the 1024×600 resolution screen. While wiping my hands all over it I was quite surprised with how light the tablet actually was. The Qooq gives you an ethernet port, USB port, SD card slot as well as a headphone jack under a nice convenient rubber cover on the side. Built into the back yields a stand that will stand the Qooq tablet to your sink and give you ultimate access to all of your recipes. No more reasons to have your Mom’s recipe book getting abused with the Qooq tablet at your side.

The tablet is has been out for a while in France but is scheduled for release this September in the US. I will be at their booth this week for a hands on as this little guy is actually quite interesting.

PS3 Hacker graf_chokolo Likely Headed To Prison.

  • June 22, 2011 7:06 am

It’s pretty much a given that nobody likes Sony. They’re assholes plain and simple. And while the world was transfixed on infamous iOS and PS3 hacker, George Hotz (Geohot), another talented PS3 hacker by the name of graf_chokolo was waging his own war with the media giant. But where Geohot was able to settle and move on, graf_chokolo will have to give in to financial woes and take up residency in prison instead.

In a comment posted on his website, graf_chokolo says:

Hi guys, no money left anymore. Going to jail soon probably because i cannot pay court costs.
But i’m ready to stand up for everything i said and go to jail for that too. It’s not important to win, more important is to show them that we are ready to fight, that they cannot scare me off easily. Yeah, i’m ready to go to jail for my believes and my principles.

Most of people probably think that all computer and kernel hackers are weak kids, hiding in a cellar, eating pizza whole day, writing software and looking for attention Maybe, but that’s NOT me. And i will get out eventually and continue my work. My work means very much to me.

It really is quite a shame that Sony can take people to court and ruin their lives when they’re merely trying to return a much requested feature to the community. Maybe if Sony actually cared about their users and environment as a whole they’d support the hacker community and/or hire them to better the platform. In reality, however, Sony hates you. End of story.

MeeGo coming to an Android near you. Nexus One first up on the table.

  • September 26, 2010 12:49 pm

The Nexus One is to many, “the” ultimate Android device even after several other more powerful devices have been released. The reason being is that it’s Google’s one and only self branded, carrier agnostic phone. But that whole “Android” thing is getting so old, isn’t it? How about we slap some MeeGo on there, hmm? A team of developers has started with Google’s Jesus Phone as a solid base, with plans to expand to the Dell Streak and HTC Desire in the coming weeks/months.

For those interested in more, be sure to add @vgrade (Nexus One) and @Termana (HTC Desire) to your Twitter list-o-friends in order to keep up on the action. Hop inside to see a few more shots of the magic as well as a video showing of the Dell Streak in particular, showing off it’s new face…

Nexus One gets all cozy with Ubuntu

  • July 8, 2010 12:35 pm

If one word could sum up Android, it would be this: Unlimited. It’s literally unlimited what end users can *willingly* do with it. I mean, ports of ROMS traverse hardware boundaries and limitations, features added in after the fact bring about a more functional device, and then of course, completely different operating systems show perhaps the ultimate form of user customization. Take for instance the N1 you see ‘splayed above running Ubuntu. Yes, a full blown desktop OS on a phone.

Yeah, such hackery has been done many times before, and desktop OS’s aren’t really all that great on mobile devices anyway — The whole touch thing, ya know?. But that doesn’t mean we’re any less thrilled. As geeks, anything is fair game. Yup, even you you ubuntu running Nexus One.

For the full rundown and instructions (if you so choose to do this yourself), jump on over to NexusOneHacks.net and get to it. **Be sure to clear your calendar for the afternoon. Have fun…

Android making it’s way to iPod Touch

  • May 16, 2010 5:04 pm

I can see Steve Jobs’ eyes bleeding as we speak — Android is coming to the iPod Touch. This is of course completely unofficial. The same talented hackers who whipped up Android on the 3GS are bringing the wonder OS to Apple’s AT&T-less iDevice, offering up the Android love to an even larger population.

No time frame for release is given. But according to the dudes in charge, we can expect to see something tangible (figuratively) in the not too distant future. Any iPod Touch users feeling the open OS love?

Steam to drop on Linux in near future?

  • May 4, 2010 6:33 am

For gamers on Windows who are tired of keeping track of physical discs, digital distribution is where it’s at. Seeing as how Games For Windows Live pretty much sucks, that leaves Steam as the only legitimate source. In my experiences, I’ve been fairly impressed with Steam’s selection as well as daily deals and weekly specials. Last week Steam for Mac was unveiled telling tales of gaming goodness soon coming to OS X. The last piece of the puzzle — Linux — is aching for it’s turn…

Microsoft apparently owns the world. Claims Android infringes on a bajillion of their patents. Forces HTC to purchase “runs Android platform” license.

  • April 28, 2010 6:48 am

In this day and age, it’s becoming an increasingly common trait to misuse and confuse copyright law in the digital age. The simple matter of it is, you cannot place rules, business models, or regulations that were designed decades ago for physical goods on digital ones today. But alas, it is what it is. With that, we end up where we are today — Microsoft apparently realizing Android is a growing threat and instead of actually keeping their head down and putting all of their resources into Windows Phone 7, are looking to go down the legal route with Android.

If you can’t beat ‘em, sue ‘em…

Vive la resistance: PS3 hacker “Geohot” announces PS3′s “Other OS” option is back!

  • April 7, 2010 4:55 pm

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand the basic problem that knee jerk reactions cause. In the case of Sony and the axing of the other os option for “fat” PS3′s in the recent 3.21 update, Sony simply took the easy route out. Instead of embracing or merely patching the hole that allowed such a hack to be performed, they banned the option to install Linux outright. Now, the debate as to how useful it was given the PS3′s limited resources isn’t…up for debate.

The simple fact is, if Sony releases a product and boasts of a certain feature for years as one of the main reasons to own a PS3 and then removes it suddenly because someone had a little fun with their property…well then, you can see the problem this causes.

But it’s ok. The dev community will always trump backward thinking corporate brute muscle. As such, Geohot is back at it and as promised, claims to have patched the recent PS3 update that blocked the other OS option thereby bringing it back to the masses. All you need to get the other OS juices flowing once again is a custom generated PUP file that is version 3.15 or older. Sounds easy enough. No hardware hacks needed.

One thing for Geohot to look out for are repercussions. With Sony’s incompetent, knee jerk response initially, seeing a patched version re-allowing Linux will no doubt cause some ill feelings, perhaps even a lawyer or two.

It’s sad really. Sony is effectively pushing away a great deal of tinkers who simply like gadgets and like to play with them. Whatever Sony’s stance is from here on out, they’ve already lost me as a customer for life. If they keep at it I’m sure I’ll have a few more people join my club too…
